Centennial Celebration

I was looking through Rice's website (again!) and realized we, as in the Class of 2016, will be there for Rice's Centennial Celebration (: 100 years! I thought that was pretty exciting.

On a different note, who else is ready for August to get here? I can't wait for so many things! Owl week, finding out my college, getting to know my roommate, choosing my classes (especially the LPAP, basically the physical education courses), and getting to feed the squirrels are all just a few (:

Think you mean O-Week (Orientation Week). Owl Days is for prospies in April.

Yep it is exciting. What’s cool is that I was the 100th graduating class for my high school, and I was the 100th entering class for Rice. The Centennial Celebration should be really cool.

I’m sure all the new Owls are really excited for August. Completely understandable, but don’t breeze through the next few months or you’ll find that they flew by and that you miss them a lot. The whole process of finishing high school and starting college is a really unique and worthwhile process.

The only agonizing part of the process for me was waiting for my college. I was leaving for Urban Immersion early the morning after they began releasing college assignments, but the colleges that were sending out emails hadn’t sent one to me. I knew I wasn’t in Baker (at the time I was really disappointed since I stayed there for Owl Days), Brown, or McMurtry, but that was it. I found out three days into Urban Immersion that I would be in Hanszen, and my coordinators then revealed that they knew my college the whole time but wanted me to find out the surprise on my own. I then got to meet my O-Week Coordinators early and began loving the college I was placed in, just as everyone else in every other college did. Looking back, the wait was totally worth it.

That brings me to another thing: apply for Urban Immersion. Highly recommend it, as UI was a very formative experience for me.

I agree with FallenAngel9. UI was my most memorable and engaging experience at Rice as a freshman; I enjoyed it better than O-Week. Definitely apply for it in the spring. Enjoy the rest of high school and good luck at Rice! You are in for a treat (but also a lot of hard work too).

Antarius - Whoops! I meant both  I guess I just put them together haha.

FallenAngel9 - That’s awesome! I know I’ll miss high school, but right now I’m very ready for a change. I haven’t heard of Urban Immersion before, so I’ll definitely have to check that out!

Ok, I just read up on the Urban Immersion program and it sounds pretty amazing. However, I have a question. I am kind of a picky eater and I was wondering what kind of meals you had. Six days is a long time when you may or may not like the food. (:

RiceHopeful - there is always the option of getting some food outside if needed. Lots of options.

I did not attend UI (unfortunately) as I was abroad at the time.

Yeah if you let the coordinators know ahead of time they’ll make preparations for specific eating habits. We had Thai, Mexican, BBQ, and other foods, but they will be able to accomodate unique tastes.
