CGS Housing

Other than West Campus, what are the best places to house for CGS? Should I consider the CGS BSR Brownstones [which I understand are almost entirely underclassmen] or a more traditional residence hall?

West Campus in THE closest dorm to CGS. However, the next closest is 1019 Comm Ave however it is very unlikely for a freshman to get into there. I am not sure what you mean by cgs "BSR". I think you are refering to the CGS brownstone which is called the "CGS House", which is a specialty housing. This house contains students from all 4 class years, including CGS alumni (which is just another word for juniors and seniors who went to cgs), and very little freshman. It would definately be much much easier to meet friends in the larger dorms, because the majority of students there are also freshman as opposed to the cgs house or any other brownstone or "upperclassmen" dorm, but my no means does this mean that you wont meet people if you choose this path. By the way, the vast majority of west campus students are cgs people, so it is pretty nice living with the people who are in your classes.

Which dorms are considered the "freshman dorms"? Are the dorms on 575 Commonwealth hard to get into?

The dorms that MOST freshman live at are West Campus, and Warren Towers. You could most definately request to live at 575 Comm Ave which is the Hojo, and is very very convenient to SMG, COM and ENG.
