Hi everyone. I’m an international student looking for admission to US colleges. My GPA is 3.6 unweighted, with a 2300 score on the SAT. I also took 3 UK A-levels (for admission to UK universities) – 3 As. I’ve also had a semester abroad in France. I want to know what are my chances of getting into these universities: (money is not an issue) I’m planning to major in either economics or business
Duke
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UChicago
USC
NYU
Georgetown
UMich
Sorry it’s an exhaustive list, i just want to gage my chances. Thanks!
Agree with ^^^ above poster, GPA is lacking so UCB/UCLA/USC will be Reach schools. Not sure about the others.
Outstanding essays and EC’s may help, but tough to overcome a low GPA especially as an International applicant.
Can you elaborate on how the semester abroad in France went?
I think you will get in NYU, UCLA, Umich, USC, and Georgetown if your EC’s aren’t terrible and your essays are decent. Duke, Chicago, and Berkeley will be a crapshoot, you will get in if they need a full-pay high-scoring international. You are full-pay, right?
cappex, yes I’m full pay. What are the scores of ‘high-scoring international’ usually? The semester abroad was good, my french improved tremendously. Now i’m taking my French B2 exams (intermediate).
rahuilmars- I’m in hockey and golf, and hold positions in the student committee board. I do volunteer work every weekends, and have done overseas volunteering at Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Costa rica apart from my home country. Not many awards I have… Is it too shabby? I was a student leader once as well
collegemom3717, yeah I’m on a gap year now. I did secondary school in Singapore. I took CIE A-Levels privately as at that time I was thinking of applying to UK universities and thought having A-levels would be easier for admissions. Do you think i can replace my GPA with the A-levels?
@tang24 First of all, outstanding sat score(2300) even for an international student especially due to the fact that most students in the UK aren’t used to the SAT or ACT test format. Are you applying from the UK? If you are do you have British citizenship or are you a citizen of another lets say an EU member state? If this is the case then how did you manage to calculate your gpa accurately, especially if you’re doing A levels? Also what were your IGCSE/GCSE grades? Finally, you mention that you are full pay but do you realise that the cost of an education in the united states averages $65,000 to $70,000 per year? Are you aware of all the costs?
@Ali1302 I’m applying from Singapore, and i’m not a citizen of an EU country. I hold a diploma from my schol with a 3.6/4.0 GPA. I did A-Levels privately in addition to my diploma. I also did the SATs as well.
The reason I took A-Levels and SATs additionally was because I knew my GPA was not going to make it the moment freshman year ended as I did really badly for that year, and I thought having A-levels and SAT would perhaps boost my chances more when applying for UK and US universities.
I did GCE O-levels in my country, rather bad – 1 A, 5 Bs, 1 C
yes i’m aware of the tuition fees and costs as i’ve done my own research
