I go to a HS in NY but since a parent lives in VA, I could qualify for instate so of course I have to at least look into William in Mary. Due to a bad financial situation and the fact that my twin brother also will have to attend school, I need to go instate

-My GPA is a 3.6 UW of out 4.0

-I havent taken my SAT's yet but projections are around 1150 which ik is extrememly low but that is due mostly to the fact that my writing scores could easily be above 700, but Writing isnt taken into consideration

-EC's arent great either, when HS is all said and done I will have been Pres. of one club for 3 years, Amnesty Int. Member, and NHS member

-I have over 400 hrs. of. Comm. Service

Again like I said I understand that this is a longshot, at the moment im just tying to figure out where I should even try applying to

What is the point of this thread? You already know it’s a long shot.

To really evaluate a “chances” post, you’d need to provide details on the classes you’ve taken, class rank, etc - there’s a huge difference between a 3.6 UW for a student that’s taken 10 AP courses vs. a student that’s taken “none”, for example.

In any event, the SAT stats you’ve posted probably make W&M a reach. From a profile and financial pov, JMU and VT might be better fits for you.

Best of luck!

Sorry about that, probably should have included those details

When its all said and done I will have taken 6 AP’s, 1 as a Soph, 3 Junior and am taking 2 Senior Year.

And ive looked into JMU but their acceptance rate seems pretty high and a lot of people say that its a party school so it may be more on the safety side for me.

I havent however looked into VT, but you have inspired me to, thanks for your help!

And to the first poster, obviously I understand that getting accepted is a longshot, if you notice thats why I asked if it was even worth applying

Oh I also forgot to add, my school does not release class rank so I have no clue about that but my grade only has about 100 students in it anyway

VT has some very strong programs - engineering, obviously, but many others, so if your interests and those programs match up, then it can be a very good choice.

JMU does have something of a “party school” reputation, to be sure, but still, a lot of smart kids go there, too.

You might want to take a pass at the ACT - many students score better on the ACT than the SAT. Or at least consider taking the SAT now for “warm-up” then take it again in October - the thing about the SAT is that you’ll get some amount of improvement just taking the test more than once. And it should help somewhat as a diagnostic, to help you better focus your SAT studying this summer - you do have a summer study plan, right?

A focused half-hour each and every day will serve you better than a week-long cram next September.

And of course, you indicate you think you have strong writing skills - at W&M, like many schools, a top-notch essay can often make up for other areas where you’re not quite so strong. I’d spend a lot of effort on crafting your essay - read the Admissions blog on the subject, and others as well.
