I am a WA state resident. So all schools are OOS except UW.

I am a CC student, and am maintaining a 3.80 GPA. I want to transfer in as a pre-med engineering major. Major either: MechE or ChemE or MatE.

Schools Considering:
-USC
-UW
-Stanford
-UM(michigan)

UW is a top choice since its least expensive for me being instate. Anyway could you chance me at those schools?

Problem: My highschool grades are like 2.95 GPA, but I have AP classes etc that I took(never used the credits since med school doesn't like AP)

Extracurricular: -Work as truck dispatcher for someone
-Volunteer for Red Cross(1 year)
-Volunteer for Health Center(~1 Year)

Does it count that I tutor my cousins? Can I list that? I do it every week for math mostly.

-Shadowing physicians(55 hours)

Hello, fellow Washingtonian!

I’m familiar with both UW and USC, so I can give you some advice. With your gpa, and assuming you’ve met the prerequisites at both schools for the transfer process, I think you have an excellent shot at both. I’m not an engineering major, but I just got accepted to USC as a transfer student with a cumulative gpa of 3.74 my freshmen year of college (out of state, east coast). Make sure the important classes for your major requirements are in the A range as far as grades go. A few Bs here and there wont hurt, so don’t fret.

If you’re serious about USC, I would also try getting involved in maybe some research opportunities. If you can’t find any, just working or volunteering (just the sake of getting involved in something you love) is definitely a must. But it seems you already got some nice experience down (the tutor experience shows leadership, so definitely put that on there!) My gpa was slightly above the average of 3.7 for transfer students, but my extracurricular activities in writing, journalism, and media was my “hook,” I guess. Also, really put some time in your essays…really important at both universities.

One of my friends just got admitted to UW as a sophomore transfer for the social work program. I believe she had a 3.6 gpa at the time of admit. Both of us didn’t do hot in high school (2.9 and 3.3 ish gpa). Luckily, both of those universities are holistic with its own admission process. The fact that you can keep up with a 3.8 from a 2.95 is really impressive and shows it’s not always about how you start, but rather, how you finish.

I’m not certain on the admission process for UMich, but I do know they give like no financial aid to out of state transfers. I’ve never looked into Stanford, but I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to get into the program.

Anyway, good luck!

Thanks.

I know Stanford is out of reach, I just tossed it in there on accident.

I am really interested in getting into UW and UMich, they are my top two choices.

I am also considering TexasAM because its a good engineering school as well.

Thanks for the advice, so did you matriculate to UW?
