Chance a UM Michigan Applicant?

here's some general info on my academics, just let me know what you think my chances of admissions are, thanks.

Applying: School of Engineering

<<standardized tests="">>
ACT Score:
1st: 30(no writing) English:26, Reading: 31, Math:33, Science: 30
2nd: 28(with writing) English:26, Reading: 26, Math:35, Science: 26 (thank god for math.)
. Essay:8 English w/ writing: 25 (score is weak imo, but adequate for UM I think?)
SAT Score: 1810, CR: 590, Math:650, Writing:570 (barely in the mid 50% range)</standardized>

<<high school="" academics="">>
GPA UW:3.91
GPA W :4.00
*both these are at the end of junior year, and both will increase at the end of senior year, hopefully they will see my transcript and see that my two B's were in Econ/Gov and Health freshman year, and realize that from then on it was all A's, even in MUCH more rigorous classes. (I'm pretty sure these are solid for UM admission)</high>

AP Courses: AP Statistics(5), AP Language(4), AP Calculus BC(NT, anticipating 5), AP Lit(NT), AP French(NT), AP Psychology(NT), AP Comp Sci AB(NT, might not be able to take class due to scheduling restrictions at my school.)
*NT=Not Taken

ECs: French Club(10,12);NHS(11,12) <<weak ECs, plan on changing that in College.

Awards/Recognitions: top 10%, Magna Cumma Laude(when I graduate), Commonwealth Diploma(when I graduate)<< also weak.

Teacher Rec's: Should be excellent, all my teachers love me and usually recognize me as one of the most brilliant students that they've taught(sorry if that sounds cocky XD, but it comes from them, and has multiple times, especially by math teachers.)

Essays:Should be excellent

Thanks for reviewing this!

There’s nothing that really makes you stand out as wanting to go into engineering. Your math scores on the act are good but science is weak. GPA is fine but few ec’s. What’s commonwealth diploma?
High match - Low reach

What do you mean “High match - Low reach”?

And also, my essays will do an excellent job at showing why I want to go into engineering (specifically Computer Engineering, as I’m taking AP Computer Science, and I took structured programming already and excelled greatly in that class, and am expecting to get an amazing rec from that teacher.)

Science is weak, yes I agree, and that’s mainly because my school has a terrible, terrible science department(yes I know that doesn’t really matter to them, and they probably won’t realize it anyways, and besides the science portion isn’t science, it’s graphs lol…)

Commonwealth Diploma is the highest Diploma you can receive in my state(Kentucky), it doesn’t really get you anything out of state, but it is still recognized as an award, and it requires a rigorous course schedule to receive. It requires numerous AP Courses, and specifically, the most feared requirement, is 4 years of foreign language and an AP foreign language course.

oh yeah, I’m out of state, which sucks…

Does any of that help?

lightja, to answer your question about what high match/low reach means, here is a list:

In - 100% chance
Safety
low match
match
high match
low reach
moderate reach (or just reach)
high reach
no chance

Hopefully that’s self explanatory.

As for your chances at UMichigan, I’d say it’s a low reach because your standardized test scores are not good.

They will realize your science department sucks because they’ll get a high school profile from you. Still your ACT is kinda low for engineering, especially for an OOS student. I’d say a slight reach, especially if you still haven’t applied.

I’d also like to know what you meant by “High match - Low reach”

High match means he’s very likely to get accepted, and low reach means it’ll be hard, but he has a decent chance, right?. That’s a big range. Did you mean “Low match - Low reach”? o_O

Edit: stopit, really? I thought high match > match > low match. It would definitely make more sense (to me at least) High reach means it’s a really big reach closest to no chance, so shouldn’t high match mean it’s a big match, closest to safety?

Match…I don’t see this applicant getting rejected from Michigan.

Thanks Entertainer.

Also, by the way, my UW GPA is a 4.0 and weighted higher now that I realize that UMichigan ignores freshman year, since both of my B’s were freshman year, if that affects anything.

Also, can anyone explain the difference between match and reach? or just the whole match/reach/in/safety/etc. system of chancing? I’ve never seen it used before and it would be useful to know why it’s laid out like it is.

Thanks again!

Pretty much self explanatory.

-Match means it can go either way, but you have a good chance. 55/45. This means that this school is a target school.

-Reach means that you have a low chance, roughly 25%-30% chance.

-High reach means you probably aren’t getting accepted. You have a really low chance. Maybe around 10% or less.

-Safety means that you have a high chance in getting accepted, 75% or greater.

-In: means 90% chance if you want to put numbers behind it. Note: These are my estimates. Other people have different percentages for these categories.

Reason people say reach is because your ACT is 1 point below the average for engineering and you are an out of state applicant. I think you are a Match because the engineering acceptance rate is 54% or higher and because your GPA is a 4.0. Michigan is prestigious especially in engineering, but it isn’t that hard to get into.

Thanks again entertainer, that really helps clear some things up. Btw, would you mind mentioning what your scores and such were, as well as what school you’re in? I see you’re in class of 2013.

BTW, does anyone know how UMich is on financial Aid? It’s a big subject for me, because my parents make about $30k/year as of right now, and besides that, my mom is an alcoholic and can’t hold down a job, so that could even go down… and I’d hate to turn down such a good school if I were accepted just because i can’t pay for it. I know some schools, specifically University of Chicago, if accepted, pay your tuition in full if your parents make under $60k a year. But that’s tuition, and I’ll probably need help with room and board beyond that, but I’m definitely open to the idea of getting loans for that.

Thanks again!

match. look likes your umich gpa is a 4.0 and with the 30 ACT you should be okay.

Wait, will U of M still use his 30, even if it’s without writing?

I don’t think they will, but I was curious if they’d at least look at it

didn’t see that.
ok that changes things a little
a 4.0 with a 28.
Slight reach/match.

Oh I was confused… lol I didn’t see that you put 30 with no writing. Now it might be a slight reach however, since you are applying to engineering, math and science is what Michigan focuses on. So I agree with black pen. Slight reach/match.

OOS, 3.9 unweighed GPA with a good course load and a 28 on the ACT makes the OP a match/slight reach for Michigan.

U of M is no longer recalculating GPA. They’re using your UW GPA from grades 9-11.

Liek I said before, I think it’s a slight reach because your ACT is low for engineering, especially for OOS.

^
Really?
source please.

yosup, that would represent a pretty significant shift in policy. Where did you read that Michigan was now including 9th grade in their admissions analysis? Unweighed vs recalculated would not be too major a change, but including 9th grade would represent a step backwards if you ask me. Universities now are moving the other way.

Yosup’s reliable source is beginning to look like his ass. Instead of informing us with some “big news”, take the time to make sure it’s 100 percent legitimate.

^ LOL, this is why I wasn’t going to say anything. Ah well, you guys will figure out soon enough =/

Btw, it **is **100% legit.
