Chance at Brown or Oberlin? (Stanford is just for laughs and giggles)

Female
African American
High School: the Shipley School
going into Senior year
GPA: 3.4/3.5 I think
I got 1980 on the SATs, but I know I can do better and I plan on taking it again.
I also received a 4 on the US History AP

ECs: editor of literary magazine (involved since freshman year), I write for the school newspaper, Gay-Straight Alliance (involved since freshman year and I might be president next year), 3 years of guitar, theater, 50+ hours of community service, but no school government involvement.

As for sports, that’s my weak point. I’m horrible at them and I don’t do any. I did 6-month stint of fencing in my freshman year, but I don’t think that counts for much.

I had a summer job last year, and this summer I did a creative writing workshop at UVA.

Reach Schools:

Brown University, Oberlin College, Stanford University (for laughs and giggles), Columbia, USC, UCLA, UC Berkely, Pomona, Cornell University, and Harvard (I’m almost 100% sure I won’t get into Harvard, but my mom went there and so she’s essentially forcing me to apply).

Target Schools: Emerson College, Carnegie Mellon University, Boston University, University of Virginia, Pitzer College

Safety Schools: University of Iowa, Loyola College at Maryland, Chapman University

I personally think I’m being overly ambitious. What do you guys think?

black female… IN everywhere, dont waste money on retaking sats.

okay, obvious exaggeration. but it certainly makes a huge difference. your scores are good, certainly for emerson and BU. UVA probably in, because i think youre in state?

get 2100 on sats and awesome essays and you have a shot at stanford and harvard, in my opinion

yea retake your SATs, get a 2100, or better yet 2200, and you’ll be a shoo-in for any school in the country

The URM factor is going to get you into a lot of schools, plus the Harvard legacy won’t hurt!

Add Wesleyan. My son is rising senior at Oberlin and loves it.

In at all except for maybe one out of Brown, Oberlin, Stanford, and Harvard. Female URM is great, plus the Harvard legacy won’t hurt.
