Chance at UVA?

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
State of Residence: PA

Class of 2009

Academic Background
Weighted GPA: 4.23
SAT Critical Reading: 660
SAT Math: 690
SAT Writing: 680
Combined SAT: 2030
ACT Composite: N/A (taking in February)

I am currently a junior at a highly competitive high school in PA. I have basically taken all AP and honors courses that I have had the opportunity to take (almost), which is 4 APs and 8 honors courses including my current junior year. I plan to take several AP and honors courses senior year as well. I play soccer and run track for my high school and I am also involved in several ECAs.

High School Background

HS Type: Independent Private College Preparatory High School
Class Rank: School doesn't give out class rank but I'm guessing at least top 10% out of 285 students

SAT II Subject Tests: N/A (taking in June)

So what do you all think my chances are at being accepted in UVA or any other colleges in general (average, competitive, very competitive)? I've only taken the SATs once and my math potential is probably in the high 700s (i aced the first 2 sections, but did not manage my time well enough on the third section). Also, I'm sure I can improve my verbal and writing section scores as well. I know I still have some time before applying to colleges but I just want to get a feel for where I'm at i guess.

Thanks

P.S. - I'm interested in biomedical/chemical engineering. Any suggestions for colleges I should look at or visit?

Your chances are good if you can secure some strong leadership roles like class president etc.

thanks for your comment

You could work on your SAT's. List your EC's. If they are interesting, you have a chance, if they are typical, you don't have a very good chance.

My SATs will go up. The Princeton Review reports a good score for UVA is a 1330/1600 (I scored a 1350), but an increase in my SATs certainly could make up for something I might lack. My ECs are good. I'm not in every club but I'm dedicated to what I am involved in (sports and activities). I still have to take the ACT, SAT Subject tests, and the SAT I a few more times. I know my SAT score will improve and I feel that my ECs define who I am and what I stand for so hopefully everything works out, if not oh well.

Thanks for your post.

your SAT's are good for IS, but you are OOS, where your SAT's are poor among your peer group. Shoot for over 1400, minimum.

If you are very involved in EC's you should be able to write strong commitment essays, which will look good, and set you apart from everyone who are members of every club (imo a bad thing)

Yeah, you're right. I completely forgot about how difficult it is to get into UVA OOS. Any reason for that, just curious? Anyway, my goal when I'm all done with SATs actually is a 1400 minimum so I'm glad you said that because I know I'm capable of achieving that score. And I will definitely focus on my core ECs in my essays. Thanks a lot.

Good, if you can score a 1450, and write some good essays I would say you have a good chance.

The reason its so much harder OOS is because the state mandates that UVa remain 2/3 virginia residents because of virginia taxpayer support. Unfortunately, the mass majority of UVa apps are from OOS, so they have more apps for less slots. Its like two different leagues.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense now. Thanks for the info and advice!
