Thanks so much guys! Which of the reach schools do you think would be the best shot? Preferably just choose one of the ivies, I’ll probably end up applying to Ucb and an ivy, which would you all recommend?

Fair shot Tech, everywhere else is a reach.

Thanks! Would anyone be so kind as to recommend which of the ivies which I listed (Princeton, Stanford, MIT) should I choose for my reach school to apply to? (Probably apply ea or Ed to help my chances, and work super hard on essays which I feel us can write really good)

Oh and include caltech as well (exclude duke)

@Thejohnhippie: I get the impression that your dream school is Stanford…if, indeed, it is then by all means apply to Stanford as your high-reach dream school and have some low reaches and matches and safeties…just like in investing 101 you should have a list of schools that make up your portfolio…some high risk/high return (Stanford) and some low risk/safety like your state flagship school and schools in between…

…you get only one chance in life to apply to the schools YOU want…if you don’t apply you won’t know if you could have gotten in or not…remember Stanford is very “holistic”…so one can never predict what they are looking for in the ESSAYS and RECOMMENDATIONS which can make or break your application…Good luck.

Caltech is also highly competitive and not easier than Stanford. If you really want to try an Ivy, perhaps Cornell may have a slightly better chance.

Thanks so much guys! I don’t know, it’s just I’ve wanted to go to an ivy all my life, and now I’m just trying to figure out at top 20 engineering school which I would have the best chance to get into and invest the most time on the app. Would it be better to invest more time in either Stanford or Ucb? Those are sorta my high reaches. Thanks guys!

Note that only 1 of the schools on your list is an ivy. The Ivy League is an athletic conference that includes 8 schools in the northeast.

@data10 sorry, I meant to use prestigious university, always said Ivy League, and the name has a stuck with me to mean a university which is hard to get into

What’s your class rank? Class rank can sometimes make up for low gpa. The valedictorian at my school only had a 3.8 unweighted gpa (which is a little low on Ivy standards) but she still got into Princeton and Stanford :). People in the top 5 of her year also did not 4.0s but got into UPenn and Columbia. I would definitely retake SAT’s in September and see where that puts you. Of your list, I think the schools that you have the best chance of getting into early are Georgia Tech and UC Berkeley (which I would consider mid-reaches if you write good essays and filter out your ec’s on your app). Good luck!

Thanks so much! I go to a small college prep school which doesn’t rank, thanks so much for the recommendations! And I’ll definitely try to retake the sats to get some better scores!

So I just received my act score, and it has improved to a 34 with sub scores of
30 English
36 math
34 science
34 reading

How does this affect my chances?
Thanks!

That’s a great ACT score! You might even want to send just your ACT score now and not your SAT score. You might not even want to retake the SAT, although if you believe you can get a 2250+ then by all means you should. It helps you out even more if you have both a competitive SAT and ACT score, but don’t retake the SAT if you think you won’t do any better. Also, I am assuming that you did the optional essay, as it is REQUIRED by many top schools. If you didn’t, then you have to retake the ACT and do the essay…

I did, but I didn’t do too hot on it only a 29. That doesn’t affect my composite score however. Thanks! Chances on my colleges now?
