Chance for University of Michigan with a SAT score of 1100?

Hello, i applied to the University of Michigan via Early Action and my application was deferred. I have a 4.0076 gpa, I’m one of the valedvictorians at school (6/348), I’m in 4 extracurriculars, 7 ap classes throughout high school, on my ap exams i got a 4 for world history, 3 for human geography, 3 for government and politics and 3 for language and composition. My SAT score was 1100, (640 on reading/writing and 460 on math). I know my SAT score is very low compared to the average at U of M, but is there any hope for me? And is my application beng deffered a good sign? I thought because of my SAT score i would be rejected but instead i was deferred, that must show that they have some interest in me, right?

To answer your last question, no. Because you did early action, they don’t reject those applicants. They only reject applicants who were deferred during the regular decision session. So an applicant who was deferred during early action is likely to be rejected in April. I suggest that you join more club and take the SAT again or consider taking the ACT. 1100 is very low for the class average. Good luck

Oh i understand, i did retake the SAT and i got an even lower score, thank you for the response

@africanmamba

If the 1100 score is representative of your ability, rather than some anomaly (e.g. you had the flu when you took the exam), Michigan wouldn’t be doing you any favors by accepting you. Your classmates would be much stronger and you will likely have a difficult time keeping up.

Are you instate from one of the rural or urban high schools? If so then your SAT will be ok.
As long as you’re applying for liberal arts not a major such as stem or business that requires math of course :wink: !
If you’re out of state, UMichigan is out of reach.
Where else have you applied?
Have you applied to test optional colleges? You’d be an ideal candidate for those. Many are as highly ranked as UMichigan (Bowdoin, Wake Forest) and most will provide you with an excellent education.
An issue will be financial aid - what’s your EFC?

@MYOS1634 I am instate from an urban school, and i applied to the college of LSA. I have applied to Central Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Wayne State University, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University’ and i got accepted into all of those. I also applied to Michigan State University but haven’t gotten a decision yet. Is Bowdoin and Wake Forest in michigan? I have never heard of those schools. U of M is the only very competitive school I apppied to. My EFC is 0. Thank you very much!!

@hebegebe that makes sense, if do retake rhe SAT hopefully i will get a higher score. And nothing bad happened that day, the math section just really messed me up. Thank you for the response

1100 is more than 200 below the 25th percentile, so it would be difficult even for in state. Unfortunately, the next SAT will be in March and is too late for this application cycle. If you do want to go to UMich AA, try other campus and then transfer next year. I know many students took that path.

@Jasmine866
You certainly have a chance. I know individuals with a 27 that got into U Mich. I will say that you first need a hook, and you need to be I. If you have those, you have a shot.

@billcsho that’s what i hope i will be doing if i dont get accpeted. Thank you

@VANDEMORY1342 I’m sorry what is a hook and an I?

@Jasmine866
Well first are you in state?

Yes @VANDEMORY1342

Wake Forest is a top university in North Carolina. Bowdoin is an elite college in Maine.
If there is a Fiske guide in your neighborhood library, even if it’s old, it’s worth borrowing, to check out these two schools. You can read about more schools, too.
Bowdoin is worth trying for if you come from an urban school and have an EFC zero because their financial aid is very very generous (getting admitted there would likely cost you less than most universities listed above. They don’t even require you to take any loans). It’s a long shot but if you do get in, it’s even higher ranked than UMichigan. And they’ll evaluate what you bring based on your entire application without your test scores. PM me your Common app essay. I’ll look up more test optional colleges that meet 100% need for EFC zero applicants.
In the meanwhile: Apply to the Honors college at all the colleges that admitted you as this usually means more scholarships and a better learning environment and better support/outcomes (especially at GVSU which has a very good honors program.)

@Jasmine866
okay good. Are you anyone of these…?
URM(Black/Hispanic)
recruited athlete
recruited musician
First generation( to go to college)

Also I would advise that you look into test optional schools.

Did anyone get rejected EA? I have only see people post about people they know who got rejected, yet to see any proof. Leads me to believe there was only accept/defer

It rarely happens, if at all.

Grand Valley State and Wayne State are the new “It” schools in Michigan. Not really a bad place to start and if you still want to go to Michigan then transfer the following year. Most likely you will make friends and just stay…that is if you don’t get into Michigan. You are judged by the peers of your school so you might have hope. Also reach out to your regional school counselor for Michigan and maybe your counselor and principal can give their admissions contact a call. Your SAT is just one factor in your acceptance. Some kids bomb the Sat and do great on the ACT and vice versa. I really wish schools would start making kids take both. My two kids were both better on opposite tests and the only way to know was to take both. Good Luck.

@MYOS1634 Ill definitely check out those 2 schools and the honor programs at the schools i was admitted to, and What is PM? Thank you very much!
