I’ve already applied SCEA to Yale, but I’m stressing and want to know what people’s opinions are about my chances.
GPA: 3.92 (4.0), 4.33 (5.0)
Rank: 21/450 (top 5%)
ACT: 32
11 AP’s
I have an extensive list of extracurriculars, my teachers who wrote my recs know me very well, and I am an African American female. I think what I’m mostly worried about is my GPA and lack of honors/awards besides NHS (junior and senior year), a scholarship to Summer@Brown, and AP Scholar. Yale is my top choice and I’ve shown interest by speaking to my region’s admissions rep and traveling to campus for an interview. It’s obviously a crapshoot, but any insight would be great!
Your ACT score puts you at or below the 25 percentile. For the matriculated Class of 2021, only 16.4% of those who submitted ACT submitted scores of 31 and lower. https://admissions.yale.edu/sites/default/files/files/class_profile_2021_final.pdf. However, being a URM will help. Demonstrated interest is not considered by Yale (see its CDS https://oir.yale.edu/sites/default/files/cds2016-2017.pdf) Your real chances hinge on the quality of your LoR’s, EC’s and essays.
@BKSquared Do you think my GPA/rank will put me at a slight disadvantage as well? I love my essays and my EC’s demonstrate my commitment/leadership throughout all of high school, but I’m not sure if I’m competitive enough with these stats.
The rigor of your courses will be more critical. Top 5% puts you in the ballpark. Just based on stat’s, imo, they will look at your application seriously, so the decision will be based on the subjective elements. Remember there are plenty of applicants who have perfect/near perfect test scores and gpa’s who are rejected. So hope for the best but have options ready. What you do when you are in college will be more important than what college you land in. Best of luck.
