Chance Me - 2012 Admission

I’m currently going into my senior year, and I’m seriously considering Brown as one of my reach schools. My plan is a double concentration in Theatre + Performance Studies and Sociology. However, I’m still not sure whether it’s worth it. These are my stats:

3.6 UW GPA, 3.85 W, I’ve taken 1 of the 4 APs my school offers (US), and I’m planning on taking 2 more next year. (Psych or Euro + Chem or Bio) next year, my school is planning on offering 6 or 7. I am also planning to take AP French online. I will have at least 4 years of each core subject. (Eng, Math, Sci, History/Social Sci, For Lang) I have taken 3 classes at a local community college. (Sociology and 2 semesters, equivalent to 2 HS years, of French)

SAT: 2040 - 670cr, 700m, 670w. Trying to get this up to at least a 2150 in October,. but no promises.
Subject Tests: US - 700, Literature - 560, French - 410 (I had no idea the test would be for people with at least 3 years of study) Planning on retaking Lit and taking the subject test for whichever science AP i take next year.

I’ve been in my school’s Drama Academy for 4 years, an intensive conservatory-style actor training program that takes up 3 hours of my school day. I’ve had a 9-hour day all 4 years of high school. My theatrical resume is bounitful, including an equal distribution of acting, behind-the-scenes tech work, and writing/directing. I would say I’m an above average - excellent writer. I also have over 150 hours of volunteer work at school and in the community, including a no-kill animal shelter the summer after my Freshman year for 80 hours. I am also planning on getting an internship/working with at a local theatre company my senior year that goes into underprivaledged communities and devises theatre pieces related to the socioeconomic issues facing the people. I’m participating in the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Summer Seminar this August as well.

I’m a mixed-race gay male with a deceased parent living in a struggling middle class household. My counselor said that my gender/race/sexuality could potentially equalize the playing field in regards to my less-than-stellar GPA/academic courseload. I know no matter what it would be a stretch, but I’m still on the fence as to whether it would be worth applying.

Thank you!

Very interesting applicant. Your academic record is definitely on the low end for Brown–in terms of rigor or results. However, if you improve next year and bring your GPA up after taking an overall 4 APs, you could be better off on the academic side.

Bring your SAT scores up! Though your SAT I score is okay (it could definitely improve–a 2150 would be great), your SAT IIs need some major boosts before application season.

Your extra-curricular focus is great. If you end up going through the Shakespeare festival and the internship, you should be fine there.

And you have some great hooks to write your essays about: URM, sexual orientation, financial situation…

With killer essays that highlight your hooks, an improved GPA and better SAT scores, Brown is definitely a possibility. At the moment, it’s still a reach–but you still have time.

Oregon Shakespeare Festival is a definite. The internship is highly dependent on whether or not I shine in Oregon, the company is run by one of the artistic directors there.

I did the math, and I could potentially get myself up to a 3.7UW/4.0W by application season if i get straight As next semester. I’m going SAT crazy come September so I can get as high of a score as possible by the day of the test. I made a 280-point leap from an 1860 between January and June, so hopefully that can hold for October.

Subject tests were a bust. I’ll actually study this time for Lit and Chem/Bio.

Quick question - does Brown want the entire score history? That 560/410 are nasty.

also, thank you very much!

Brown only needs to see two SAT II scores. Either use score choice and only send your top two, or they will only care about the top two.

If you have video of your acting, look into sending it (I’m not sure exactly how that works, look for info on the website). Brown will send video to the theater department, who will rate you. If you get a high score, that can help you.

Does your school rank? If yes, where you rank will affect the decision. Also – will your guidance counselor say that you took “the most rigorous curriculum offered”?

I’m not sure that taking chem or bio SAT after just a couple months of an AP class will help you raise your score. And unfortunately, you really can’t study for the literature one.

ETA: As to whether you should apply – if you can afford the application fee or can get a waiver, I don’t see why you shouldn’t apply. Just make sure that you have a balanced list of schools you are applying to, especially financial safeties.

As of last semester, I was something like 40th in a class of 200. My GPA from this past semester definitely brought that up, probably close to if not in the 20s.

If not Chem or Bio, what should I take? I’m a bit at a loss. I don’t want to take Math I, but I don’t know how prepared I’d be for Math II.

You’d be fine for Math II if you got a 700 on the SAT math. It basically just covers high school algebra, geometry, and some trig, if I remember correctly. No calculus.

yeah, i haven’t taken a math class since last summer (took Algebra 2 independent study, planned to take pre-calculus jr year but didn’t fit in my schedule) so i felt a bit rusty. although with pre-calc this year, i’m sure i’ll start to feel a little more prepared for Math II in November.

I also think other ways that (I believe) you can increase your chances of Brown University is to upgrade your activities in terms of your position and its importance to the school community around you. I actually had a similar situation as you have had and later got into good school because I actually activated my activity in a way that nobody else could!
