I haven’t really found much on this topic for NYU. I’m wondering if there is an advantage to applying ED II to NYU over regular decision. The acceptance rates are pretty much identical and an NYU alum told me that there really isn’t any difference or advantage ed II gives over regular.
I would be very happy with going to NYU and if ED II does give an advantage over regular, I would gladly apply ED II, but at the moment, if ED II and regular are pretty much identical or only marginally different, I much rather take the regular route.

I’d say go for RD because 1) in NYU’s case there isn’t a significant advantage of ED over RD; it’s true that the acceptance rates for both are about the same. 2) your stats look good, not extremely competitive but still pretty good, so with RD, If NYU likes you, they would give you more money to lure you in. 3) seems to me that NYU is not your top choice, so there’s no urge for you to apply (and get the result) early
@chlxbb Thanks. I don’t need financial aid(-100000% chance I would qualify anyways). Out of my regular decision schools, NYU is my second choice right behind Cornell. My stats are kinda low for Cornell, but I feel like my senior year grades, course load, and essays could pull some weight. If ED II even gives me even a 4% extra chance of getting into NYU, I would take it. Overall, I like NYU more than Cornell by a good amount(setting, student population, research/internship opportunities), but the prestige and ivy factor of Cornell would outweigh all else if I somehow miraculously get into both.
@barcodeIlIl eh, I don’ know i feel about the ivy prestige thing… I wish I could say stuff like "don’t get too caught up on the ivy concept, " but after all, I don’t really have an idea how much the ivy fame could weigh on your resume. So maybe it depends on your intended major/ career?? If Cornell has a good Econ program then you’re set!
If you really wany NYU then I would say ED. There is an advantage. Last year there was a 1% increase in accptance during ED. Small number but still. The fact that your parents have PHD’s in my opinion is a good thing. The only reason not to do ED is if you can’t afford NYU’s hefty pricetag.
@aik257 Thanks. I’m not a guy that likes to take too many chances. I think I’ll wait for my umich ea decision to come out(or if by some miracle my ed to northwestern) before deciding to ed ii or regular. First semester ends on the 22nd of January for my school, so my first semester transcript probably won’t be sent until the 25th, and decisions for ed ii for NYU come out on February 15th. Is this enough time for them to review my first semester transcript too?
Also, I’ve always seen 2 parents with PHDs as a disadvantage. Sucks that I don’t have legacy to any good school in the US. I am lucky that they can afford the tuition for any school, but the way I’ve seen it is that colleges expect me to have done more with my GPA and such because of the wealth of resources that I was born with.
Can anyone else weigh in on this? Posted this on the ED2 thread but its a little more in detail stats.
Weighted GPA: 90(We don’t use a 4.0 or 5.0 scale. Just on a scale of 1-100. Get +3 extra points for AP and honors in weighted grade for that class if you have 85 or above. You get +2 extra points for AP and honors in weighted grade for that class if you have 80-84.9)
SAT: 2170 (800 math, 670 CR, 700 writing)
Subject Tests: Math II - 700 US History - 650
Courseload prior to senior year: Pretty much all honors where I could. Had to take Calc regular junior year because I had a low B in pre calc honors.
APs junior year: AP Chem, AP Physics, APUSH
Senior year course load: AP Calc BC(hopefully this makes up for me taking calc reg since I have a 96.3% unweighted and 99.3% weighted in this class right now with probably 1 more test left before the semester ends and I’m pretty confident about midterms which could even boost this grade)
, AP Bio, AP Euro, AP English Lit, Chinese 5, Econ Micro/Econ Macro.(Other grades are looking good so far too. Much better than my previous years.)

AP Tests: AP Chem: 3 APUSH: 4 AP Chinese: 4 AP Physics: 2(Should I submit?)
Essays: 10/10
Notable ECs: Model UN president(president senior year only), Internship for an advisory firm, Tennis team, Assistant coach for my private tennis coach, Orchestra Concertmaster(not in orchestra senior year though), Level 7 ABRSM piano, Investment club, Indian Culture club.
Everything for 3 years through sophomore-senior year since I was a pretty un-involved kid freshman year. Orchestra concertmaster was for junior year only but I’ve been playing instruments since 1st grade and my schedule this year couldn’t fit orchestra.
Recs: Anywhere from 8/10 - 10/10

@vineyardvines We’ll, if I get deferred/rejected by Umich today I’m going to ED II(don’t want to take chances and ED II can’t hurt right?) If I get accepted I’m going to regular decision maybe even for stern. I did hear back from Northwestern earlier this week…result wasn’t good.
@dehca2016 Good luck. I really need to get into CAS too. After getting deferred by Umich and rejected by Northwestern I’ve been questioning my competency. Someone from my school got into NYU CAS last year with similar stats compared to me though(he was Asian too). His essay and recs might be just a tad better than mine(my essays are more serious and about what I want to do, his are more lighthearted). I have better extracurriculars than he had though for sure.
Hey there @barcodeIlIl
I think you’re good for CAS. Stern might be a stretch, but it’s also possible because you have great essays & ECs. I understand how anxious and frustrating getting rejected is. Go perfect your application and good luck
You got deffered from Mich and rejected from Northwestern? Other than NYU, those are the two places I’m applying (regular).
Well, I’m gonna go cry into a pillow
But I’m the same way. I need to get in to prove to myself that I haven’t just wasted my time or that I’m a failure. If I get into CAS, I’m going to throw a party. It’s gonna be lit. First song on the playlist is “welcome to New York” by Taylor swift
@dehca2016 Yeah, really really wanted to go to Northwestern, was my first choice by a long mile. Sucks and in all honesty, Northwestern was kind of a reach for me even ED. Had someone last year get in RD(to him it was probably like a safety though) and someone else 2 years ago from my school get in RD. Her stats were amazing though but ECs slightly worse than mine. I’ll be good with CAS though. Lived a 1 hour train ride from NYC for pretty much my whole life, but actually living in NYC will be a different experience. If your stats are the same as mine, then you shouldn’t hope too much for NU regular. Umich you might still have a good shot though…
Also, I asked this in the ED2 thread, but first semester for me ends on January 22nd. So NYU wouldn’t get my first semester grades until probably January 28th - February 1st. Do ED2 decisions get released on February 15th or could it be earlier? Would this be enough time for them to properly review my application with my first semester grades?
@dehca2016 dude, your stats are better than mine. You’ll get into CAS or LSP at least (which is just basically gen reqs and you’re basically guaranteed CAS in 2 years)
