Pretty high chances. As long as applied early decision or early action
If you are replying to mine, yes it was EA and we visited, did the tour, stayed at the Inn at VT (beautiful campus, so impressive!).
Does anyone know if the acceptance rate for ED is high or lower than the overall acceptance rate? Specifically engineering if that matters. I read last years class was comprised of 15% accepted early decision but that seems low if ED boosts your chances.
Ed May be a tad higher since students are committing themselves. Early action according to VT is easier than regular decision as supposedly most all spots are filled by end of ED.
Does anybody know whether Tech releases EA decisions before their published February date? Seems like a lot of other universities are responding far before their published deadlines. And while Iām at it, Iāll see what you guys think of my sonās changes:

I think you will be good
We are Caucasian, high income and live in Virginia. Our daughter has a 3.9 GPA (weighted) and 1310 on the SAT. Her extracurricular activities are strong and she is bilingual.
She applied to Va Tech in the ED program and learned today she has been deferred to EA. Does anyone have insight into the percentage of kids who are deferred for ED, but later accepted as EA?
Iām seeing 4.1 gpa kids deferred. They seem to be much stricter this year on early decision. Itās going to be a tough year. I think your going to see a good bit accepted at EA. What is your daughters major?
I was just accepted with a 3.38 GPA and a 21 ACT could be because I applied Agribusiness.
Also, just curious about the strategy employed here by Va Tech. Why would they defer a student during the ED phase, and later accept them during EA? In ED, the school has all the power, as acceptance leads to a binding commitment from the student.
Based on all the trouble they had last year with the massive incoming class, you would think they would control this class size by taking as many ED kids as possible, and not defer on anyone they find less than qualified. We have already heard about numerous kids in our area being deferred today.
If you defer a student on ED, and later accept them on EA, the school loses control and the student has the option to do as they wish. It is better to be accepted under EA and keep all your options open. I just donāt understand the logic of the schoolās thoughts on thisā¦
Thank you for your reply! Our daughterās major is Biology.
Biology and engineering were 2 overaccepted majors. Many speculate they are going to be a good bit harder to get into this year.
@Oldtimer42 A couple thoughts on this yearās ED/EA scenario:
ED applications probably increased this year. Thereās been plenty of banter on CC and other sources implying that an app for ED may improve chances of getting an offer. So you could have a combo of a.) bump in higher stats apps just as natural result of more applications; and b.) increase in borderline ED apps (based on prior ED stats) thinking that a show of commitment would get them an offer.
Based on the stats you posted re: your student, her SAT was above mean for BIO and her GPA was below mean. The reality may be that admissions has historic stats predicting enough upcoming EA applications in or above your studentās range that they felt she should be in that pool for later evaluation. Especially if this yearās BIO ED apps jumped in overall average stats compared to last year.
Does your daugtherās school use Naviance or a similar tool, or does the guidance office share historical stats on acceptance? The BIO stats mentioned above include all applications from all over - how she matched up vs. prior results from her own school may give you some idea of how this may play out.
Deferral sucks. I think in some ways itās almost worse than a rejection. As others have posted over the years - focus as much as you can on the positives of 2nd choice schools during the wait. Hopefully it will all work out well in the end.
ShenVal18: Thank you very much for your helpful and thoughtful response!
How is a student who applied ED and deferred viewed? Heāll be reviewed for EA, but does it mean - we like you but we need to see what other candidates we get are, or weāre not ready to turn you down yet? If deferred ED, could student be deferred again in EA for regular or is it final in EA no matter what? Student is optimistic for EA - Iām just wondering if student should be thinking of pivoting his brain to alternatives (which he has). Lastly, do senior year grades get reviewed in EA? His senior year grades are nice and would help
Deferred to EA will be treated as if appleid EA. No you will not submit anything new. If think of send in new SAT/ACT they would get added in.
I donāt know if its too late, but have you considered taking the ACT? Some people score much differently on the ACT than the SAT. Itās still a test, though.
