Hey man, you’ll be fine I was recently accepted under Early Decision with almost identical stats as you! I applied agribusiness.
I can try to take it. I don’t know if I can submit it after but it might help me a bit. Honestly a good idea to take it. Thank you!
Hey congrats! That’s awesome. I hope so. I read that they take 15% of their regular decision applicants which kinda worries me. Hopefully I get lucky!
@ShenVal18 Keep in mind that VT only started offering EA as an option last year. There is no historical data beyond this past year. And obviously with the over-admission from last year they are still learning how to deal with ED vs. EA and the increased applications from switching to the Coalition app. I agree, they might be approaching things conservatively this year to avoid another debacle. They can always pull off the waitlist like they did in 2018.
@Curiousity2 Pure speculation on my part, but I think 3 contributing factors to deferral to EA are a.) fairly strong stats but lesser essays, so they want to see essays form a larger cohort. b.) stats that are close to historical mean, c.) underrepresented status. You bring up a good question re: could a 2nd deferral take place - VT’s admissions site doesn’t mention that, but it might be worth a call or email to them to see. How do your students stats compare to prior applicants from their HS? How do they look re: prior year’s overall stats for their major? Definitely encourage the positives about their 2nd and 3rd choice schools.
@rbc2018 Although EA is new, there is plenty of historical data re: applications received after early decision. So they are still able to approximate the volume of applications received after ED closes, and of those applications where mean stats may fall. VT’s Fall 2019 Wait List page has a published number of “over 31,000 applications”. My student’s 2018 acceptance letter references “over 32,000”, so if those are accurate, the change to coalition app caused little if any bump (possibly the reverse). Where the system hiccupped was in predictions re: the number of students who accepted their offer of admission.
@ShenVal18 4,513 more students applied in 2018 vs. 2017. And then it leveled off for 2019. It’s odd because they said the whole purpose of switching to the coalition app was to ‘break down barriers’ and get more applicants (or different applicants?). Strange to have the application numbers steadily increase over the years and then have almost no change. What I do see is that they gave out more offers. At any rate, I think they are still figuring out what they can expect given the changes made to the process in recent years.
The bump from 2017 to 2018 occurred under the prior stand-alone VT application. The way I posted the years may have been confusing… my student was accepted to attend Fall 2018 (reference acceptance letter “32,000+”). Applications to attend Fall 2019 are referenced as 31,000+ on VT’s site. The coalition app only applied to that 31,000+ cohort. So if accurate, impact of the coalition app was a wash.
@rbc2018 Didn’t see your full post when I replied. I was expecting a jump in apps as well when they went to coalition, but I understand that their were aspects of the app last year that were pretty cumbersome.
@ShenVal18 I agree. I had one apply and enter fall 2018, and another that just applied and was accepted recently. Totally different process. And I have to say the current 4 mini essays (with poorly written prompts) were not a plus. Last year they required a separate self-reported grade form to be submitted, but they did away with that this year. Good decision. Personally, I think the self-reporting (via coalition app) of scores and grades is a step forward, but I’m not a fan of the new ‘essays’ nor of the absence of a second choice for the few highly competitive majors.
I am not sure what exact type of school you are looking got, but if you do not get into VT, you may want to look at UDEL, JMU or Michigan State with that major.
@cbl1 You said that VT releases decisions either on February 22 or a couple days before? (early action)
Yes - and?
Hey guys I recently was deferred from Virginia Tech Engineering and I am wondering what my chances may be because I am reading lots in this thread about how they are being conservative this year and I am just wondering where my application stands and if I should start heavily looking into colleges I’m already accepted or hold out until February 22nd before I get serious about visiting a lot of those other schools. My stats are as follows:
White Male
In State (Northern VA)
1420 Superscore (730M/690Eng)
4.03W (school doesn’t technically calculate it but I have a 3.79 UW if I were to calculate it)
64/641 Rank
8 APs, 8 Pre-APs (my school doesn’t half weight them and these are considered the honors courses, my school not adding a gpa boost to these classes is why there seems to be a GPA gap between many of the GPAs on this forum and mine)
Straight A’s my junior year with 5 APs (YTD GPA of 4.71 in my junior year)
Senior year: Civil Eng (PLTW, counts as an AP course in my school), AP Physics C, AP Calculus AB, Eng 12, Us & VA Gov, Engineering Design and Devlopment (PLTW), Compute Information Systems
Captain of Varsity golf team, Seaperch robotics and competed at the national level, NHS, BETA, Vex Robotics, FBLA
Legacy if that helps (Father majored in engineering and graduated in 91)
Don’t know how to feel because many said that this would be an easy in but I was deferred so I’m not sure if my stats didn’t meet what they expect or if they are being really careful with ED and I have a solid shot in EA. Would like to know, thanks!
I think you should make it in early action round.
Thanks for helping ease the stress a little bit! So based on what you’ve seen from this year was ED a lot more selective or was it normal this year? This thread is all over the place so I’m curious how you would rate how it went this year in terms of competitiveness from what you have seen over the years, especially compared to last year.
@Nats2019Champs Engineering at VT has always been a lot more competitive than most of the other majors. I think this year is even more competitive, but I also feel like the ED selectivity has been pretty extreme. My son is an EA applicant and a legacy (I was ChE in '94). Good luck to you!
thank you
I heard agri admits under lesser credentials. congrats on admittance.
Son really wants to be a Hokie- deferred ED. NoVa competition is on steroids. Daughter who graduated top top of everything-service, sports, academics- didn’t get in any Ivys but then graduated top engineering state school 3 yrs and now at Harvard grad for math/CS - go STEM ladies. Anyhow, frustrating how penalized for NoVa competition - students are so sleep deprived building their resumes! Sorry ranting - just disappointed for son who wanted to be a Hokie like his dad in an otherwise 'hoo family. But, not over – heard not a lot of accepts in ED, hoping for an accept for him as hokie in Feb. Other schools are reaching out to him with accepts-
It sucks that it’s such a long wait until Feb, good luck on EA!
