ShenVal1 - Son worked hard on essays and did them on his own - I read them before he submitted - essays were strong. Stats (GPA) may be close to Nova mean, but Nova mean is high. SATs higher than mean. He has tons of service, so hope they saw that. I guess we’ll see what VT does - son is optimistic for a yes come EA after being deferred for ED. Wishing him the best as great kid!
Thank you. Are there stats anywhere showing x applicants for ED, y for EA, ?% admitted ED, etc.?
@Nats2019Champs Unfortunately, this thread is really not much different than prior years - admissions results are unpredictable. Please keep in mind that the sample size you are looking at on CC wouldn’t even register on a traditional statistical scale. Chance me discussions are primarily speculation. How do your stats compare to the data your school and guidance office has for prior applicants? Per VT’s 2018 stats, as a white male your SAT was above mean by 70+ points but your GPA was .11 below mean. What does that mean for you in 2019? It’s guesswork.
If you haven’t visited or researched your other options then you should do that as soon as you have the opportunity.
@Curiousity2 You really should have him contact the guidance dept. at his school for more info on the stats of students accepted from prior years. Do they use Naviance? First measure - how did he compete with his own school history. Second measure - how do his stats compare to VT’s historic acceptance history. VT does not go into gpa/test detail specific to when students were admitted (EA is only 2 years old at this point anyway). They did say last year that they received 2x as many EA applications vs. ED and RD combined.

There are a ton of variables that admissions dept.'s take into account beyond individual GPA, test, and community service. How rigorous do they think the curriculum of a student’s school is? Does the school have a reputation for grade inflation? How rigorous was the coursework the student took to gain the resulting GPA? There seems to be a trend towards placing less emphasis on test scores (JMU went optional with those last year, and UVA considered the same a few years ago). And most everyone’s got a resume full of extracuriculars and community service. It’s competitive across the board.
I agree with those who do not like the long EA wait! So many other schools have already given their decisions for EA.
Hi! I’m a senior from NOVA. I recently applied early decision and was deferred. My major is Animal and Poultry Sciences. My SAT score is 1280 and my gpa is 3.95. I only have one AP (AP Bio, and I got a 4 on the test), though I’ve done five honors courses. I also have continued math into calculus. My extracurriculars include a volunteer club, a language honor society, and a part time job. What are my chances of being accepted in early action? Thanks!
when are early action decisions coming out?

Folks have spoken extensively on the difficulty of gaining acceptance this cycle in Engineering or Biology. Does anyone have insight into Majors which are currently less competitive?
Is there an advantage to applying as Undecided?
I have known that Agriculture and Construction Management are supposed to be less competitive
I agree. I have seen your posts on some of the same schools my son applied-USC, JMU, Tech, UNCW (?). Is your son leaning towards USC or VT?
Applying OOS (NY) undeclared major. 33 ACT (34 superscore), 4.2 out of 4.5 unweighted, 2 varsity sports, multiple EC. When we went for a tour, the guide said that any engineering major would need a 29 or higher on the math portion of the ACT or else they will not be considered. Hoping for Honors College.
Your ACT is very good so that should make sure your on to good side. Just on GPA is hard to factor since schools are so different in how they calc - but I would be surprised if your not accepted (especially if that GPA is Top 15% of your class)
I am deciding on majoring in biology or microbiology. Since biology was over accepted last year, will majoring in microbiology be a better option to get accepted?
Are you applying this year? Haven’t you already turned in application?
Both of those would be under the biology department so I don’t think one would be easier to get accepted over the other. It may be easier to get into the systems biology which is under the AIS department within the department of science not the biology department… just guessing here as that department is lesser known.
Hello, I am a high school senior in Virginia, and I really want to get accepted into Virginia Tech, but I doubt they would especially with my low stats
-Gpa: 2.4
-SAT: 980, I was hoping I could take it again but the March one is past due the Deadline and I wasn’t able to take the one in November due to a competition for Band.
Intended Major(s): Graphic Design and Visual Communications and Fashion Design & Merchandising with a minor in Music Performance
I’ve taken a combination of six honors classes, one IB, and I am currently taking two dual enrollment classes.
Clubs and extracurriculars: Vice President of the French Club, I’m part of a nonprofit organization club, Theatre productions for two years(I’ve been a crew head for two of them, and currently one for the upcoming show), Marching Band for three years(Colorguard) and the Winter Guard for one, Orchestra for all four years(Cello), I’m also part of the International Thespian Society and the Tri-M music honors society.
I’ve already sent in my Early Action application but would they still consider me since I am a first-gen minority from a low-income family.
Honestly I don’t think you have a very good shot. If VT is your dream school I would recommend doing the 2 year community college program where you can then get accepted into VT as a Junior. Saves A LOT of money and you still get a VT degree just as anyone else.
My son has applied early action with majoring in Biological Science. In state (Northern VA), weighted GPA 3.8 with SAT 1370. 6 Honor, 8 AP and 2 DE classes. 3 ECs and strong essays. Run Parchment report with chance of 62%/70%. What does this mean in term of his real chance on getting accepted for EA admission? By the way, his senior mid-year grades are on track for A- average (3 AP and 2 DE classes).
About 70% I would normally say pretty good shot. Only thing here of concern is we can’t really use historical numbers as we do t know if they are going to overcompensate for last years Biology over admission.
Hi! I am Asian based out of Northern VA, and I applied to the Business Information Technology program at VT
GPA: 3.91 Weighted
SAT: 1290
Took 8 AP classes
Extracurriculars: Did Debate fresh and soph year, 3 years varsity Track & Cross Country, Basketball fresh and soph year, currently working as a math tutor
If anyone could give me an idea or insight on my admission chances that would be great! Thanks!
Hard to tell. Is your 3.9 is in top 15% of your class I would think you are good. Your in that are where it can go either was especially in Nova.
