Chance Me / Application Discussion - Virginia Tech Class of 2024

Decent chance. Always hard to predict.

@cbl1 I also have SAT 2 Math 2 800, SAT 2 Chem 800.

Also, is this year COE easier or harder to get in?

Despite what VT is saying , they have to admit fewer this year

Can anyone comment on the chance of getting off waitlist this year? Will it be zero again?

There isn’t even a waitlist yet how could anyone predict.

@Lilmelo @DecentCheddar I think it’s a toss-up, but I would lean towards a reduction in offers being made this time around, but with the expanded size of certain cohorts remaining the same (if that makes sense). Acceptance offers increased by an amount that was pretty consistent with the annual increases each of the prior 3-4 years, but the number of students accepting the offer went up unexpectedly. The academic impact of over enrollment in certain majors was addressed by VT adding more staff. Were those 1 year contracts? If not, then if staff remains they are going to fill those classrooms.

One thing we do know… if campus visits by prospectve students is any indicator, then in spite of the over enrollment last year and the related concerns of parents of potential class of 2024, 2025, etc. students who posted on CC, VT is more popular than ever. Over 50,000 visits in 2019 (and a 44% increase in first 6 months of 2019).

@Lilmelo @jgwolf The # of acceptance offers year vs. year has increased at a fairly stable pace ('16 up 1,363 from '15, '17 up 1,494 from prior, '18 up 1,497 from prior, '19 up 1,684 from prior). 2019 offers were up 187 total from 2018, so I don’t think over acceptance is the right characterization. Depending on staff contracts and the outgoing class of 2021 size, it’s conceivable that Fall 2020 enrollment level could be pretty close to 2019. For those coming in to VT Fall 2020, here’s hoping that yield projections are really on point this time around!

@ShenVal18 I guess when the numbers come out for applications we will see. My concern is that there is now not only issues with on campus housing but also a shortage of off campus housing as well. If my son gets in I would certainly have a good discussion with him about these issues. He has been accepted by several other schools so at least he has options

@jgwolf I hear you re: on campus housing. I think a somewhat overlooked aspect of the convo re: will there be less offers is transfer apps from non-community college students. I have a feeling that transfer apps from other 4-years are going to be heavily scrutinized this time around. I think they should renew the agreement with HIE and move the transfer LLC dorm to HIE since those students are older and more independent and use that on campus space strictly for incoming freshmen. You can bet that current freshmen who request on-campus for their 2nd year are going to have tough odds. That’s the easiest space-maker.

Speaking from experience, the “shortage” of off campus housing is sort of a manufactured crisis to spur early commitment from students. There’s a surprising number of them that still have openings though, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of someone not being able to get off campus housing. If your son goes to VT, carve out some time around move-in to check out some off campus options for the following year and he’ll have a head start on the masses.

Great idea @ShenVal18 about the off campus. I know its the same at JMU where they have to get places to live in Oct when they just started school 2 months before. You seem like you have alot of knowledge about VT- do you have others there? If my son gets in i think it will be one of his top 3 (Hes in at Uof SC and thats number 1 right now)

That is not true. The majority of acceptances are via regular decision

Virginia tech during on site visits has specifically said your best shot is early action vs regular decision and that by regular decision they may have many spots already full and may be harder to get remaining spots. Fact.

@jgwolf My son is an undergrad at VT, and we know about 2 dozen families with current or just recently graduated students there. Know a ton of families/students at JMU also. Off campus housing is definitely a racket. Feel free to PM any questions - happy to share what we learned re: do’s and dont’s for incoming VT families.

@makersmike VT does not breakdown their data to include when applications were filed (ED, EA, or RD). What thay have said is that last year the number of EA applications was 2x the total of ED and RD combined. Statistically that would trend towards more EA acceptances than any of the other two categories.

@jgwolf what is your son’s major?

USC, UT and Purdue are high on my son’s list and it will be a tough decision. He got into all of those. Waiting on VT as last school to post decision.

@ShenVal18 I would like to pick your brain too on the off campus stuff knowledge. My D is at UF and she needed to know by Nov of her freshman year where she was living as a sophomore. It was stressful.

What are my chances? 3.5W GPA. 1130 Sat. Alittle sports and leadership positions. minority and not from nova.

Lilmeto 3.5wgpa is on low side. What major? How does that 3.5 compare in your school. (Top20%?)

My son is freshman. He signed contract for apartment back in October and he was one of last given a guaranteed. But as shenval18 mentions - the apartment complex’s like to manufacture demand for their own sake. I spoke with guy at the apt complex and he said that they will have a lot more open spots just that they don’t get renewal info from current residents until January. So they get a lot more openings come February or so. There are apartments. The real reason for signing early is if you really want a specific complex and what to guarantee a spot there.

@HappyNJ my son got into USC Business school but he may want to switch to Sports Management . He also got into UT but I really think it will between USC and VT if he gets in. He got deferred from UGA but don’t think he will end up getting in.

@HappyNJ Feel free to PM me any questions re: off campus housing. Son’s friends are in 5 different complexes so we’ve got some decent intel on what’s out there. For incoming accepted kids - if you can stretch drop off and move in by a day you can collect info pretty quickly so crunch time in Oct/Nov isn’t too stressful.
