Chance me at Michigan and Wisconsin?

I’m a senior girl who goes to a college prep boarding school (won a scholarship there, applying for college FA) and I’m applying to a whole bunch of schools, but am interested in my chances at my two favorites. Also to note, I am a Morehead-Cain semifinalist (don’t know about finalists yet,) and in-state for Wisconsin. I have been accepted to University of Minnesota Honors College.

Stats: 4.0 unweighted GPA all four years, 4.4 weighted junior year, 4.6 weighted senior year

Maxed out calculus curriculum junior year, taking Multivariable and linear algebra (Calc 3 basically) senior year, all APs except one psychology class, conducting an independent stem cell research project with UCONN medical

34 ACT, 35 super scored

5 AP Calc BC, 4 AP Lang, 5 AP Physics 1, will be taking two Econ APs this coming year. My school does not actually do AP being independent, does our own “college level and beyond” classes and APS are optional.

Leadership: RA, tour guide, math tutor, English paper editor, light tech lead for theatre, scenic painter, community service president

Also a dancer, sports manager, and have been in intern for an athletic trainer and for an orthopedic surgeon

Have two jobs during summer and breaks

Hooks: first gen college student, military family, woman in stem

You will have zero issues getting into Madison being in-state with those stats. Wisconsin is also your best bet for need-based aid as they have a huge grant program for residents.

Thank you! I hope I hear good news in December.

University of Wisconsin won’t let you get away and could be your more affordable choice. Michigan is tough for anyone OOS. I like your profile and think you have a great chance. They have been better the last few years with financial aid to OOS students also but it will be your more expensive option.

We are from Wisconsin too and would be absolutely shocked if you were not to get in to Madison. As for Michigan, it’s a challenge as an out of state student. However, your grades and scores are similar to my dd, who applied and was accepted EA last year so I think you have fairly good odds, especially if you nailed the “Why Michigan” essay. They defer a lot of OOS kids who apply EA though so don’t be shocked if that happens to you. Michigan is quite expensive for an OOS kid. Financially, I expect Madison will end up being a better choice for you.

Daughter works with a girl OOS that already has gotten into Michigan.A first generation college student who was born in India. As for Wisconsin I agree you are guaranteed to get in and it would be financially a lot cheaper.

@Nicki20 - Unless this girl is a recruited athlete with a signed letter of intent, Michigan hasn’t released early actions decisions yet for this cycle. They typically release the first wave in mid to late December.

Beat me to it… Lol…

yeah, and Michigan just recently had people sign for recruitment- my best friend is playing soccer there next year and signed two weeks ago officially.

That’s great to know that your dd got in! I hope I’m lucky as well.

I wonder if you’re thinking of Michigan State since Michigan hasn’t released admission decisions yet?

FYI, early signing period for recruited athletes ended about a week+ ago. Michigan b-ball was expecting a 5-star recruit to sign, it he opted to wait

A uwGPA 4.0/34 ACT has as good of a chance as anyone else OOS at UMich. UMich doesn’t superscore or use weighted GPA’s, but does look at course rigor. OOS acceptance rate is 19%.

Since it is likely you could get into multiple schools you will need to do comparisons of them. Look at probable majors at each school. Look at how they do Honors (UW is excellent-in the past and currently). It is not necessary to have a separate Honors College- UW’s Honors Program will offer opportunities all four years. Look at the campus culture. Look at the campus layout- consider not only the campus size but if it is contiguous like UW or you need a bus like Michigan to get between areas of campus. The size of the city does not matter that much with one of the large vibrant campuses you haver mentioned. Enjoy wherever you end up.

Comparing Michigan and Wisconsin is like comparing apples to oranges. They are so similar: both cold, have great athletics, amazing opportunities, school spirit, academics, etc.! Getting into either of these two schools would be amazing!! Good luck!

I know multiple kids with same stats rejected from Michigan OOS. Depends on other applicants from your area and campus needs.

Actually, it sounds like it’s comparing apples to applies…

It sounds like University of Michigan is at the same level as UW-Madison is, in you guy’s mind, right? Isn’t the former better than the latter usually?

I just mean the US News’ rankings.

Sorry, I am a layman about this type of comparison between different universities. I just know the US News’ rankings.

Both are great schools. Michigan > Wisconsin.

Rankings are fun to follow but in reality don’t mean much. Great school plus fit means more. Great school could be just about any school that you can excel at5. Most in the Midwest haven’t heard of Cal Poly Slo https://www.ceng.calpoly.edu/

It’s an outstanding college especially for engineering.

Look what the school has to offer you and where you think you would grow, learn and shine at. No job hiring you is looking at current rankings. Schools know the reputation and quality of the students they have had success with… Make sense?
