*My school's API is 955 and climbing by the year. It falls within the top 40 public high schools in the US so the classes are super hard. Will this make any difference in my admissions (Like offsetting my low GPA?) Thanks!

I think you have a terrific chance at all those schools. Your ACT should offset you’re lowish GPA. Also, I knew people with lower GPAs, lower SATs, at a lower API-scored school that got into Davis. I think you should be fine, but apply to maybe UC Santa Cruz just in case. (btw, if you get into all 3 I’d pick Davis, it is well-known for its Biological Sciences). Good luck!

Yes, Davis is definitely my top choice Thanks!

And perhaps I will apply to UCSC just in case as a safety. How would you rate their biological science program? I hear they did a lot of the work on the human genome project - is it safe to assume then that their genetics program is good?

^I would definitely add UCSC to your list. It’ll be the exact same amount of work to apply, you will just check a box and add $60 in application fees. It’s a great atmosphere and location for a college campus and I’ve heard their bio program is good.

Consider applying to UCI and UCSD as well. You seem to be very strong in science, especially biology, and both of these schools have excellent bio departments. UCSD might be a reach and UCI a low reach, considering your below average UC GPA, but you should give it a shot. Your schools high API may help them realize that your classes are really tough and its hard to maintain a high GPA.

Alright, I’ll apply to UCSC. And yes, I’m already applying to UCI. I had thought about UCSD but I thought it would be too far a reach because of my gpa… haha oh well, why not, right?
