Chance me BU ED2 and some questions

Im a Senior in a small, private Christian school in California.

GPA: 3.63W;
Freshman: 3.5,
Sophmore: 3.57,
Junior: 3.78,
Senior (predicted): hopefully a 4.3-4.4 ( I got a 4.0 Second semester junior year if that helps)

ACT: 30
W:30
M:31
CR:30
S:30
The last time I took the ACT I got a 27 but 32 on English. Do you know if BU superscores? Superscored I have a 31.

Varsity Track and Field in 10th grade
Officer position in DECA this year and senior year I will be Co-president
American Cancer Society member (Will get an officer position this year. Hopefully VP)
Badminton Club
Math Club
around 60 hours of community service. I plan on doing 100+ before college apps
Schools i’m applying to: Pitt, Penn State, BU, Purdue, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Maryland College Park, University of Rochester, Rensselaer, Lafayette College, University of Florida, Davidson and Northeastern but I’m most interested in Boston University

Im kinda nervous because The average incoming freshman GPA/ACT scores are really high for these schools. Im applying ED2 because I think I can raise my weighted GPA to a 3.7 after 1st sem senior year. How competitive do you think I am.

Questions:
If I apply to BU EDII and check the consider me for CGS box, if I don’t get into CAS (my intended major is computer science), will I be required to go to CGS?
How bad is BU’s grade deflation actually?
Are the stereotypes about CGS students really that bad?

Thanks for taking your time to chance/answer my questions!

bump

CAS is a match, almost a safety if you choose CGS. Can you afford BU? Did you run the NPC? Merit aid is not likely.

I think you have a good shot at CAS! as for your questions…

  1. If you don't get into CAS you will be considered for CGS but that doesn't mean they will accept you into it. They could feel that you're not a good fit for the program and outright deny you. If you do get accepted into CGS instead of CAS you do have to go through 2 years of CGS before transferring to CAS
  2. I am in CGS and COM and have not noticed any grade deflation in my classes. They are difficult courses, but you earn the grade you get in my opinion.
  3. There is literally no stigma about being in CGS. No one on campus cares. CGS is actually one of the biggest schools at BU so everyone you meet will either be in CGS, used to be in CGS, or have a friend who is.

@laurrodes If you apply ED and don’t get into CAS and they put you in CGS, do you have to complete the 2 years in CGS? I want to major at CAS in Biochem so if I can’t transfer out of CGS does that mean I won’t be able to complete my major? Have you heard of people who transferred out of CGS to complete a relatively difficult degree in 4 years?

If you are admitted to CGS you must complete the 2 year CGS program, no exceptions. If you choose your 4 electives in CGS correctly you will be able to transfer to CAS and complete the degree in 4 years.

@grafsmgms you should be able to complete your major in four years if you select your electives wisely, like the above poster said. Advisors can help you with that. The only majors I heard of not being able to finish at all in four years BECAUSE OF cgs is engineering, because those programs are intense and you can’t afford to “miss” two years, so you can’t transfer to engineering. But that’s not your goal, so you should be fine!

@laurrodes Thanks for the input. I’m glad to see that there is no stigma around cgs.

@sms122397 wait so yo cannot transfer to the school of engineering? would I be able to go into computer science because there are a lot of parallels.

@karthicks07 Computer science should be ok (it’s in CAS, so transfer is fine, just make sure to use electives to fulfill CS requirements). Physically, you CAN transfer to ENG, but you WILL be here for more than four years if you do this, so I would suggest against it unless money is not an issue.

http://www.bu.edu/cgs/about/faq/ look here under can I still graduate on time. It mentions how some programs ‘may’ take longer than four years, but for ENG I have yet to hear of someone who was able to graduate on time doing this. I don’t want to say impossible, but highly unlikely.

.

Contrary to the above it is possible to move from CGS to Engineering It would require taking additional courses in the summer between freshman and sophomore years:
