34 ACT superscore (literally my only impressive statistic, which is the problem).
3.91 UW GPA, 4.2 W GPA
Chess tournament player
ran a coding contest with over 200 users participating, umm
like 250 hours of community service,
A mediocre college essay (writing is my weak spot, cs major)
I am homeschooled which probably doesn’t make a difference
Uggh my extras are trash :C
So yeah with a 27% acceptance this will be umm interesting…
tsbna44, Why do you think the OP’s odds are long at CWRU? His stats are similar to my son (3.9 UW/4.2 W GPA, 770M/750E SAT), and he is on the high end of the standardized test range for admitted students. According to Niche, my son - and therefore, the OP - has better stats than 72% of engineering students admitted to CWRU. Likewise, the OP’s stats are better than most students accepted at CWRU according to US News.
Of course, these are crude metrics and do not capture rigor of HS classes, recommendations, essays, demonstrated interest, etc. They also don’t capture characteristics that the OP cannot control like demographics, home location, socioeconomic circumstances, etc. That said, based on the OP’s stats CWRU should be considered a target, not a reach.
Timothy, Did you demonstrate interest at CWRU by attending a tour? Are you from Ohio?
My guess is if you are outside the geographic area where CWRU draws most of its applicants (OH and Western PA) that will increase your probability of acceptance. I think all schools today are seriously looking for demonstrated interest as they are inundated with applications from students employing a shotgun approach with the Common App. If you have not attended a tour or information session, I recommend doing so.
Homeschooled, self described not good essay. Tough major. Not ED.
I didn’t say no. I’m stressing the need for safe alternatives.
It’s a chance me. Zero of us know. It’s all opinion/guess and that’s mine. Unlikely but not impossible. You feel it’s a match and that’s fine. The OP still needs safeties so that message is the same.
For a home schooled student, an SAT/ACT score is essential as you have to show how you can perform outside your home schooling situation. A 34 is at the 75th percentile for Case Students.
You also want to major in CS, so you have showed them you have some interest and possibly some expertise there.
You have shown that you contribute to the community with your 250 hours of service.
What courses did you take?
Any APs?
Any Dual Enrollment?
We were pleasantly surprised with Pitt. Even though it is a large state school, the campus is manageable and in the same neighborhood as CMU. We also like their honors program.
Case Western is having an engineering information session on November 2 at 7:00pm EST. Our son just received an invitation, even though we already toured the campus. I am not sure if this is by invitation only, or if it is open to all. You might want to look into it.
About the only benefit of COVID is that you can show interest in a school without traveling to visit the campus.
Surprisingly, according to the Niche “Will you get in” tool, my son, and therefore the OP, has a slightly higher chance of getting accepted to CWRU for CompSci than Engineering.
My daughter got WL at Pitt Honors…we didn’t accept admission so no clue if she’d have gotten in. I don’t think it’s an easy in (she had a 4.55 with 9 APs, 1 DE and a 32 ACT - she was majoring in International Relations). I think you can still take Honors classes even if not in - at Pitt.
I help my son apply for internships - there’s no place to even list Honors so you do it for you.
My son is in at Alabama. Takes nothing - doesn’t like the classes. But gets the early registration. He’s a Senior next year and will drop it final semester.
My daughter is in at Charleston and it seems a good fit. She has her first “cool class” next semester - several interesting choices.

Anxious to find out tomorrow… Think she has a decent shot or is nursing a lot more competitive?
I realized it was a typo on the website stating 12/11 when decisions didn’t come out! My apologies about the misinformation…
My DD did not take SAT/ACT after months of prep work followed by months of cancellations.
APs are actually five + a dual credit English class this year:
AP Seminar
AP Research
AP English Lit/Comp
AP US Gov
AP Calc AB
Does she have a shot or is “test optional” really not test optional? This is my last of three girls to go through the college application process. I will happy when this part is behind us!
I think with Covid, there really is Test Optional.
I have not seen a bunch of stats for admitted nursing students…but I remember that one of the admitted students for nursing took AP Bio and I wonder how important AP Sciences are for nursing admission…it is good she took AP Calc as that shows strong math.
