Based on your current scores, these are my predictions.

Georgetown- Reach
Brown- High Reach
WUSTL- Reach
Yale- Very High Reach
Emory- Reach
Hopkins- Reach
U Michigan- High Match (it’s a difficult school, I wouldn’t use it as a safety)
George Washington- Match
Boston College- High Match
Tufts- Low Reach
Brandeis- Match
U Chicago- High Reach
Northwestern- Reach
Vanderbilt- Reach

Consider taking the ACT, it may be your better test. Best of luck!

You have pretty good grades and a rigorous looking schedule, so I’d say you have a chance anywhere you apply. Although most of the schools on your list are a shot in the dark no matter how good you are, Ivies especially. You’d be very competitive if you could get your SAT to a 2300 or at least close to that. Class rank is a little high, but if it’s not given, then don’t worry about it. You haven’t gotten any 5’s on AP exams, which could be slightly concerning. Pretty good EC’s, that internship and your captainship should stand out. If your last name doesn’t indicate that you’re Asian, I’d recommend applying as white to your schools. Also, you’re very lucky to have U of M as your safety school, and that in-state tuition is a huge bonus. Since you’re in state you shouldn’t have a problem getting in.

If you can raise your test scores, this is my personal opinion.
Georgetown- reach
Brown- high reach
WashU- reach
Yale- high reach
Emory- low reach
Johns Hopkins- reach
University of Michigan- match/safety
George Washington- match
Boston College- match
Tufts- reach
Brandeis- match
U Chicago- high reach
Northwestern- high reach
Vanderbilt- reach

I say a lot of reaches because you’ll basically be rolling the dice on all of these schools, as everyone else will too. Good luck to you, and be thankful you have such a great state school as a backup plan!

What schools should I look at that are matches but are still prestigious? My parents care a lot about that.
Also, I’d love to have some perspectives of what race I should apply as. My last name is German, so applying as caucasian is definitely an option. Usually when asked I mark “Other” or “Biracial” if possible.

UM definitely isn’t a safety.
I would call every school on this list except for George Washington and Brandeis a low-high reach.

Maybe NYU? You have a good shot @ Brandeis and GW. American? maybe some UC’s?

Your scores are low, but Brandeis is SAT optional. Use one of their alternate submission options and you have a reasonable chance.

@soze‌ my sat is 2030, and Brandeis’ middle 50% is 1860-2170. Their exact average is 2015. I don’t understand why in that case I wouldn’t want to submit my sat scores, considering they’re in range.

In a test optional scenario, you don’t want to submit unless your scores are at least in the top 20%. Keep in mind, the stats you quoted include applicants who don’t submit, the average score of applicants who submit is going to be much higher.

Michigan is not a safety for you or most people. Your test scores are great, but they aren’t outstanding. Michigan is a match. Not a safety or even a low match.

Georgetown- Low reach
Brown- High Reach
WUSTL- reach
Yale- Sky high reach
Emory- Low reach
Johns Hopkins- High Reach
University of Michigan match/ high match (It’s getting harder and harder to get in)
George Washington- high match
Boston College- high match
Tufts- high match
Brandeis- low reach
U Chicago- Sky high reach
Northwestern- High Reach
Vanderbilt- High Reach

Overall, this list isn’t balanced in anyway. You need to have some real safeties and real matches. You should have maybe 2-3 schools that accept around 40% of their applicants and perhaps MSU as a safety. As of right now, you could easily get rejected by every school on this list.

I agree with @AnnieBeats‌ except that I think Tufts is a reach (harder than Vandy and at least as tough as WUSTL) your list is very top heavy.

@soze I disagree. Getting into Vandy is harder than getting into Tufts. Vandy accepts around 12% of applicants compared to Tufts 18%. Maybe I’m biased because Vandy is my alma mater :-P

They are both very selective, don’t get me wrong, but based on a decent sized sampling of applicants that I know (and granted it’s in the NE, so may be skewed). Tufts is a harder nut to crack, based them having “Tufts Syndrome” big-time.

In fact, Tufts often tops many “I don’t understand why this school so hard to get into” lists.

Whether Tufts or Vanderbilt is a harder admit depends on your region. Overall, Vanderbilt is harder to get into. But Tufts MAY be more difficult if you live in the northeast because they get so many “local” applicants and far fewer from other regions. Likewise, Vanderbilt may be a bit easier for a northeast student than one coming from, say, Georgia with an almost identical application. It’s just a numbers/diversity game.

To the OP: I understand that your parents are concerned about prestige, but it does no good to apply only to reaches (I think your list is mostly reaches) and have to stomach multiple rejections. Most of the schools you’ve listed expect applicants to be in the top 10% of their class–and often the top 5%. Yes, you could get lucky, but it is dangerous to rely on luck. Keep in mind that you have to take the statistics schools offer with some skepticism. Those GPA and score stats include ALL students, including athletes, wealthy legacies and URM students whose scores/GPAs are viewed more forgivingly than a student from a relatively comfortable (middle-class) home. I think it wisest to consider a school a match only if you are in the top 75% for GPA and SAT/ACT.

@AnnieBeats‌

Tufts admission rate this year was just over 16%.

Not really sure how a bias for or against a school relates to data on admission rates? And Tufts is certainly more of a reach than Brandeis, BC and GWU. More selective than Emory, probably comparable to G’town and JHU.

OP, I agree that your stats might make acceptance to most of these on your list very difficult. And of your ecs, only the U Michigan summer internship stands out. Have you taken the ACT as an alternative? Any SAT IIs?

what is the difference between reach and match? what do you mean by these terms?

How about some “prestigious” LACs with more comfortable acceptance rates like Colgate, Lafayette, Bucknell, William and Mary, Smith, etc.?

Might look at Holy Cross-top25 LAC WITH STRONG PRE-MED PROGRAM. HC is also test optional and offers good financial aid.

For everyone worried about the high selectivity of all the colleges, here’s the rest of my list:
Boston College
Rice
Carnegie Mellon
Villanova (?)
Case Western (?)
Boston University (?)
Reed
University of Miami
University of Southern California

These are still very selective, I know. However, I think I’ll definitely get into at least one.

Also, my high school has a 72% acceptance rate at U of M within the last 5 years. I find that a significant portion of those people have not had really high test scores/gpas.

What more should I do about ecs? I feel its kinda late to do stuff now? Maybe not? Please advise.
