Chance Me Engineering/Computer Science [U of I UC, Purdue, IIT, Northwestern, UWins, UMich]

@emshadez‌
By “lack” I mean “not having enough” for the universities to which they are applying.

@jackjack48 Maybe only slightly, but not much.

If you are applying to UIUC from an IL high school, the UIUC admissions office probably has a good idea of the courses offered at your school, how your HS class rank/GPAs compare to other IL HS’s, and if you took the most challenging courses offered at your HS (mainly in math and science, since you are applying to CoE). You are not in the top 10% of the class, but this can be compensated for if you attended a rigorous HS. The other variable, since you are looking at CS-Eng, might be why you were not in a mathematics track leading to AP Calculus, if it was offered at your HS, as most other accepted applicants will have have been in an AP Calculus track.

With UIUC applications, you must also declare a specific major in the college of engineering and the application will be compared to the pool of applicants choosing the same major (and even ENGINEERING UNDECIDED just gets you compared against all the other applications with ENGINEERING UNDECIDED, which can be more competitive than other specific eng major declarations). CS majors in Engineering are one of the most competitive majors for admission and there are many international applicants, given the reputation of the program.

Here is a link that can provide race/ethnicity stats for the last ten years.
<a href=“2022-2023 Campus Profile - Campus Total”>http://www.dmi.illinois.edu/cp/</a>
(“Details by Program for Students listed for Campus Profile Item 4100 for unit 1B1-KP-KP0-434”)

Of the 1040 total CS undergrads at UIUC this year (2013/2014)

 • 292/1040 are classified as Asian American (255 male and 37 female)
 • 406/1040 are Caucasian American (381 male and 25 female)
 • 15/1040 are African American (13 males and 2 female)
 • 282/1040 are international (237 male and 45 female)

486/1040 are IL residents

- 115/1040 are female

What is also interesting is CS-Eng enrollment by class for the last ten years.
Only 99 in freshman Fall 2013 class. (low yield ??)

(Fall 2013 starts on the left)
Fresh - 099 177 173 199 124 162 139 118 134 175
Soph - 252 209 191 145 181 141 102 122 132 109
Junior - 292 255 194 201 163 114 128 153 136 159
Senior - 397 306 297 250 212 211 227 229 248 277

Being female would probably help more than being a male Arab American.

In what county from IL is your HS? Could be helpful if you are from an under represented county of IL.

I would definitely apply to all the programs that interest you, but since you are IL in state, my guess is you are a LOW REACH for UIUC CS in CoE, unless you get 33+ on ACT composite and Math subscore.

UIUC would be the best value at about $30K/year (still one of the highest in state tuition costs), but the others on your list are either private or you will most likely be paying near full OOS tuition, so they are all about $50K/year.

University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign > LOW REACH (for CS-Eng)

Purdue University - West Lafayette > POSSIBLE (likely paying full OOS tuition)

Illinois Institute of Technology > MATCH (could get scholarship/aid $$ also)

University of Wisconsin > POSSIBLE (likely paying full OOS tuition)

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor > LOW REACH (competitive for OOS applicants)

Northwestern University > LOW REACH

Since you are interested in CS and engineering, you should also look at Univ of Minnesota (Twin Cities) and Iowa State (Ames). They are regionally well known engineering programs and the OOS tuition can sometimes be less than UIUC in state tuition.

From the other public engineering schools in IL offering CS, with in state tuition rates, these are also good programs : UIC (Chicago), NIU (DeKalb), and SIU (Carbondale).
