Chance me for Barret's please

Prospected Major: Business Management, Marketing, Economics, Entrepreneurship, etc. I know I wish to go into business, just looking to reduce what part of business. I will double major.

Statistics: Instate, White, Male. Current junior.

GPA: 2.6 unweighted, 3.1 weighted. My first 2 years were spent as the hardest and highest ranked private school in Arizona, I was unhappy there and did not fit in hence the low GPA. Then I went to a top ranked public school with the International Baccalaureate Program, I got 2 As, 3 Bs, and 1 C first semester. Probably the same for second semester of Junior Year. I am probably on track for a 3.0 unweighted GPA overall by the end of my high school career. All my classes that I have taken are honors level or IB level.

SAT: 2040. 710 Math, 690 Reading, 640 Writing, 65/80 on MC and 8 on Essay.

ACT: 27 (Should I send?)

Extracurriculars:
Freshman and Sophomore Year: SADD
Freshman-Senior Year: B’nai Tzedek Youth Philanthropy Board (Donates over $10,000 per year and leads 20 of us lead 200 kids.)
Junior and Senior Year: DECA (Took 8th place in quiz bowl at area, 2nd in my school’s marketing test. At state placed 3rd in Internet Marketing and 5th place in Quiz Bowl. Going to represent Arizona at Internationals in Internet Marketing.) Running for Vice President for Senior Year.
Junior and Senior Year: Key Club
Freshman and Sophomore Year: Math Olympiad, along with the Math Newspaper
Freshman-Senior Year: Tutoring
Sophomore and Junior Year: B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, Secretary and Treasurer for my Chapter, one of Founding Members
Junior and Senior Year: Invisible Children

This sounds low (gpa and ACT) for Barrett even for in-state. But, Barrett does accept students who have done well after a semester (or year?) at ASU, so that could be an option.

Does my ACT need to be sent? And I figured my SAT and extracurriculars made up for that. My GPA is due to not being happy at the most rigorous private school in Arizona and not feeling properly challenged there.

Your stats are below what’s usually required for Barrett. That very low GPA will really hurt you. On the other hand, you do show an upward trend, and being in-state makes it easier.

You’ll have to write a killer essay to explain why your GPA suffered because of your unhappiness, but I advise you not to use “the most rigorous private school in AZ” phrase. Barrett staff are well-acquainted with all the high schools in AZ and may or may not share your opinion of that school. And to say that you were “not properly challenged” at this supposedly rigorous school sounds very counter-productive.

Hahaha, I know exactly who you are. We carpooled briefly in middle school when we both went to Phoenix Country Day School and rode the bus, before I left for Brophy. And you live/used to live 5 minutes from me.

Well anyway, sorry you had a bad time at PCDS, shoulda gone to Brophy. You’re really going to have to work your ass off to get those grades up right up until admissions time, take the SAT at least twice, and write an amazing essay (don’t write about being “not properly challenged” for sure.) It’s gonna be tough to get into to Barrett. Make sure you apply ASAP, which will be August (Barrett has monthly quotas for how many they accept, most people wait until usual time of December/January.) Make a few good relationships with teachers for your rec letters. Really try for all As and ditch some of the time-consuming ECs; you cannot afford Cs junior year.

You should look at University of Denver; I almost went there (I’ll be going to Barrett.) It was truly a toss-up between the 2 for me. Do the overnight visit there that I did over Pioneer Days. I had a great time with my hosts. They have a very well known business school with a 5 year MBA option which was very attractive for me. Talking to business people in Denver, they all recognized its Daniels College of Business as being outstanding. Also, DU takes a lot of dual enrollment, IB, AP credits so you can even be in sophomore standing as a freshman.

Good luck with all this, feel free to PM me.

That GPA is too low usually for Barrett, which likes to see at least a 3.8 unweighted.

While my test scores are higher than yours (+National Merit), my GPA is only 3.4 weighted and I was accepted to Barrett. As far as sending SATs and ACTs, that is something you take care of on the ASU app, not the Barrett app. Your best bet is to work your tail off for your 6th and 7th semesters, and then really put the effort forth and produce a killer essay for the Barrett app. GPA doesn’t have to be your downfall. Plus if you are really set on Barrett, there is always the opportunity to reapply after your freshman year.

@ zakface Your 3.4 is sort of irrelevant if you are a national merit, asu will pretty much accept any NMF into Barrett. The GPA does seem pretty low, and I don’t know if moving to the IB school helped you out much either. They look a lot at class rank and extracurriculars too, but your best bet would be to try to enter as a sophomore. Or you could try to do very well the next year but I don’t know if that would help much.
