Essays:
I know I can write a good essay (as you’ve probably noticed, writing is kind of my thing) and I really would love to show the admissions committee that Brown is the school for me!

Intended Major: Biomedical Engineering (I am also considering applying to PLME)

NOW HERE’S THE CATCH: My SAT score is only a 1390. I’m taking the SAT Chemistry and Math 2 tests this October and based on practice tests, I will most likely score a 750+ on both (fingers crossed). Do you think that I have a chance? Do the positives outweigh my somewhat low SAT score?

Thank you for your help!

Everything looks great except your SAT. What happened there? I would retake that in November. Remember, you can take the SAT in November and still apply ED as long as you rush your scoring, but you won’t be able to see the score that is being submitted to Brown.

You MUST apply ED. If you don’t your chances of admittance go down a lot. Good luck!

@usagirl1776 Oh, I’m most definitely applying ED. Is November really not too late for retaking the SAT? The thing about standardized tests for me is I get really anxious and stressed out. I definitely know I can boost my score. I honestly don’t care if I have to study everyday and do nothing for a few months, I REALLY want to get into Brown. I believe if I can get my score to at least a 1450 I have a pretty solid chance of getting in.

I think you have a great shot at Brown ED. Your EC’s are wonderful and quite focused which can be incredibly advantageous considering you have an intriguing personal narrative (2007 refugee).

Your chances at PLME, however, are quite low. PLME is an incredibly selective program that seeks out students that excel at science (many of those accepted are Intel ISEF winners, for example). This is precisely where your standardized test scores matter, especially those that relate to science. Furthermore, your EC’s are almost all focused on writing. I don’t see anything compelling for science.

Not just excelling in stem, but real experience in a health setting or, sometimes, advocacy. And the sci research teacher, you’ve known her, but has she taught you in class, the day to day group setting that’s less independent?

How does your SAT break out? Likewise, if a 95%, any grades in stem lower than 90-93?

Intel is not an expectation.

@usagirl1776 and @AverageTeen2000 I just got my August scores and I got a 1420 (700 math, 720 english) does that improve my chances? Should I still retake the SAT or should I be done with it now?

It’s really all you need. Taking it again won’t likely increase your scores. Top colleges only like to see you take it twice.

@preppedparent I honestly don’t think I’ll take it again. I’m pretty happy with my score now. What I’m asking though is do you think it’s good in enough for Brown along with my grades & everything else.

Yes, although I have nothing to do with Admissions, except that I got accepted by Brown long ago, yes, I think it is good enough.

So it’s good enough in that it’s not that below the average, but you are at the 25%, looks like Brown 25-75 is 1410-1570. However you have the essay and interview to talk about what you can contribute to the Brown community and how you’re a good fit for their open curriculum. Your scores being balanced and a refugee that’s accomplished what you have will help also.

You have a good shot but be careful not to fix all your hopes on one school. If you apply early, be ready to apply to others that you would love to attend. Brown is a great school but there are many others. In the meantime, by all means apply and know you have a shot, but no one has certainty with Brown
