Try to apply to some state universities that you know you’ll get into. Like for me, I live in Southern California and I applied to UCR, UCI, UCSD as safeties. I mean UCI and UCSD are ranked in the 40s so they’re good but I have a better chance to get into there than RPI in Troy, NY which is ranked lower. In state public schools will more likely accept you. I also have a good chance for UCLA and UCB.

UNC and Michigan were state schools i thought? idk there are no good state schools in ny.

alos, why dont you apply for columbia? couldn’t your uncle help u get in?

also, chance me for UC Berkeley?

I mean state schools from your state from your state. And I did apply to Columbia, but idk how big legacy is.
Berkeley: high match. The only problem is your oos.

anyways, here’s my opinion. take it for what its worth.
and i apologize in advance if i’m misguided in my beliefs, but…

if your family has 1,000,000+ income, i’m thinking that u wanna be a development case?
honestly (yes, i’m being totally serious here) if you ask your parents to donate some money, if they are willing, u could find yourself at very very very selective universities. like the ones you’re considering, and even more - even your dream school.

know why?
lemme put in some reasoning…
you have awesome stats. and your hook could totally be your income. each year, schools admit a certain number of students who donate money to them. most of these people could be children of famous people, famous people themselves, or just rich (or their parents are rich). make it your hook - if you can. i bet most people who are hooked dev cases dont have stats anywhere near what you have. heck, ur stats are competitive enough on their own.

though your ECs appear mediocre at a glance (maybe i’m not looking properly?) ur chances would rise exponentially (literally) if you become one of those notorious but rare developmental cases.
personally, i’m against them - they are so unfair in that just because your parents have a high income you get advantages. at the same time, i suppose… though i’m not in favor of this view, some believe in “darwinian action” or some bogus like that. so i thought i’d be a kind samaritan and just let you know about the “other option” - that attractive, sneaky thing lying in the corner.

kudos to you if you can get in without donating money (and on ur own merit instead).

but hey, that’s just my two cents.

college134nj this is a very good point that you make, and i have heard a lot about this, and i was indeed thinking about donating money. by any chance, do you know how much i would need to donate to guarentee a spot though? i hear these development case have their families donate MILLIONS of dollars to colleges to ensure a spot. im not sure if my parents would want to do that…

also, you’re the only one who used the word “mediocre” to describe my extracurriculars. i know they aren’t mind blowing or fantastic, but i personally thought they are alright. plus i will have a bunch more added to this list by the time october-november comes, when i apply for schools. but i would like to know why you believe they are so bad, and where you think i could improve upon them

Allow me to clarify.

When I say mediocre, I don’t mean that it’s bad. I believed I apologized in advance for giving it a quick glance, but if I remember correctly:
Your varsity sports is great. It should only be a plus.
But community service - lots of people do as much as you, if not more.
I think one has to really stand out when it comes to community service.
Also, the internship at that company for many years is great, since it shows continuity.
Individually, you are super qualified.

I just had some reservations since its just that competitive out there.
Think about it - unless you have hooks, or outstanding achievements (which I suppose are in themselves hooks), the applicant pool is filled with thousands like you.
Valedictorians, 2300+ sat, sports, instruments, clubs, internships…

Places like Cornell would be fine and match schools for you just based on your merit.
With great essays and recs, brown, Columbia, Dartmouth and the like are also within your grasp.

But, the yales and whartons of the world (sry, don’t remember what schools were on ur list again) are truly reach schools, unless you can seal the deal by donating money.

Schools are eager to accept student who donate lots of money, especially so if they are as academy suitable as you are. I am not too familiar with these cases, but I think you should talk to your school counselor about it. They may know how the process works.
I think people donate 5-20 million dollars? Then again, I’m not too sure, but this is the easy way to get into ur dream school.

As an added bonus, you should consider ED. With ED, your stats and ECs, and the added bonus of donating money, the schools should be falling at your feet.

Once again, I may caution you over experiencing inferiority complex once you get to college, but, since your so qualified, you may not.

Thanks for clarifying and giving me some more insight :)

Sad to say, I don’t think that I am wealthy enough to contribute such a high amount of money. The cost is not worth the potential benefits, especially because I’m not a lost cause who NEEDS big donations to have a shot for college.

I am guessing you are already into the majority of those. The only one that is a maybe is Wharton. An advantage is your high income. Colleges, especially business schools, want smart, high income students with connections to help out the less wealthy students.
how would i possibly help out less wealthy students

since you have 4 years of varsity sports and a very high SAT score, you have a pretty solid chance of getting into all of those schools. the ivies LOVE when people varsity sports and the outstanding grades/test scores to go along with it. you’ll probably be offered some scholarships, however your race will play against you. I don’t think that should be a problem based on your stats though.
