Chance me for CSU's and UC's

I am a senior this year and I am currently applying to colleges. I was just wondering what my chances may be to some of the colleges I am applying to.

I have 3.2 or 3.3 UC/Csu gpa and I have an 1700 SAT score (1100/1600 for CSU’s). By the way, I took the SAT again 2 days ago and I am thinking I got around an 1820.

My low grades are due to some health conplications that my sister had. I am asian and I live in California. I have no leadership roles but i was in few clubs and I was dedicated in them all 4 years. So far my essays are stellar as I had them read by professionals.

What UC’s do i have a chance of getting into? I know I probably would get into Merced but what about Riverside, and Santa Cruz? I really want to go to Santa Cruz. Also do I have any chance with UC davis, uc irvine if I apply with a low impacted major? I want to apply to them but should I bother or would I not even get in?

As for the CSU’s i want to get into Cal Poly Pomona …do I have a chance?
And what others do I have a chance in getting in?

Thanks in advanced!

also for my EC i took 10 years of music vocal lessons, i am in school choir and i have an internship. In addition i have around 120 volunteer hours from local library and food bank. I did ice skating outside of school for one year (should I include that?)

You’ll need to check these schools in particular, but in general UCs don’t take major into account when you’re applying as a frosh for a major in the college of Letters & Science.

Your best chances would be UC Merced and UC Riverside for the UC’s. If you address your low GPA due to family health issues, UCSC could be possible if handled properly in an essay.

UC Davis and UC Irvine’s average UC GPA is 4.0+ so your GPA alone will make these schools a Reach regardless of intended major.

I would look at some of the Cal States for solid match schools such as Cal Poly Pomona, San Jose State, San Francisco State, Sac State, Chico State and Sonoma.

Good Luck.

so my low gpa needs to be addressed in my essays?

also can I take the SAT again in December even though I would have already turned in my apps for UC’s and CSUs? should i not show my SAT score and instead tell them I am taking it in December?

If you have a compelling reason for the low GPA, it can be addressed in your essay like how your sister’s health issues affected you and what your learned from the experience or in the additional information section or by your guidance counselor. It does not need to be addressed at all but that is your decision. Your low GPA does limit your options for the UC’s especially. With the Cal states, low GPA cannot be addressed since they are all about the numbers (CSU GPA and SAT/ACT scores).

so to improve my chances in general, can i take the december SAT and submit my SAT scores later so that I can show them my higher score?

Yes, the UC’s and most of the CSU’s will accept the December sitting. That however, does not change the fact that your GPA is below average for all the UC’s. GPA is king with the UC’s, but having a better SAT score could offset the lower GPA. Apply broadly, have realistic expectations and make sure you have 1-2 safety schools on your list.

Ok so I have three questions:

  1. should I not state my SAT score at all, and send in my Dec. score later? (i feel scared doing that because that leaves them to judge gpa more)
  2. or should I state my current SAT score that I will get before applying which i think will be around 1820? And then i would submit my Sat score from december? can i even do that and will the colleges take the second score into consideration without having a judgement from before?

Sorry I am asking a lot of questions but i have really confused and nervous when it comes to college admissions.
Thank you so much!

UC’s require all scores and will take the highest score from a single sitting. CSU’s use only the Math and Critical reading score to determine your eligibility index and will superscore your SAT.
You cannot put a predicted score on your UC/CSU application. You need to report your 1700 score on the application, state that you took the November SAT and then have those scores sent to the UC’s and CSU’s. If you plan to take the Dec SAT, then you can send them these scores, but you should have indicated on your application that you would be retaking the test.

The schools will not start reviewing applications until you have submitted all documents including your November scores and December scores.

I will not be reporting my 1700 as i will get my november scores before I even apply to UC/CSU. I was just predicting what i think i am going to get but I will be reporting my november scores to UC/CSUs.

UC’s require all scores so if you send the November scores, they will also see the 1700 score.

oh ok

UC Davis No
UC Irvine No
Cal Poly Pomona No
UC Riverside Maybe (low chance)
UC Merced Likely
UC Santa Cruz Likely
I would recommend applying to CSUN, CSULA, and CSUF. They meet your stats. Best of luck
