I am unfamiliar with the schools, except UC Berk. I would say low reach for UC Berk, safety in Texas A&M and UT Austin. And a no to MIT (sorry but that schools stats are very high)

yea locoducky, I’m just applying to MIT to see what happens, applying never hurt haha. I’m glad to see that UCB is a low reach, much better than I expected and you really think that UT Austin is a safety? Thats the school I want to go to the most, because I think it has the best balance of academics, sports, fun, plus I’ll have a lot of friends there because my school sends probably 50 or so kids there every year

Well I guessing your a sophomore going into junior year right? Well if that’s the case you have lot of chances to improve your SAT, your SAT II looks fine and I think if you get over 2100 you would probably be in to most of your colleges.

thanks Powa2! And yea, I am about to be a junior haha

Maybe try taking the ACT because science/math oriented people usually score higher on the ACT than the SAT. Even if you got your ACT scores to a 33/34 MIT/UCB would still be reaches. But with those scores you could definately get into UMich and UT. Just focus on raising your test scores, EC’s cannot be helped at this point.

you got a 10 on the essay on the sat but only managed a 620?

yea ehs2011, haha as I’m sure you can tell, I’m not exactly an English person. I think I just got lucky on that essay :). If I can get another 10, I’m sure I can get a 700 or so next time.

anyone else wanna chance?

ok so thanks for the chance/reinforcement haha
it’s good that you spend time with your ECs instead of just padding.
community service is good!
i’m going to be honest that you will probably not get into either MIT or Cal. It’s not impossible, but as things currently stand, you have very low chances. so apply anyway, but please don’t depend on them. if you manage 2250, you have much better chances and it is more possible but still a huge random toss.
michigan I would say ok chances, that one will be a toss-up. improve the SATs to 2200+ and you have significant chances. and the texas schools, almost certainly. good luck

thanks flyingllama! haha I’m basically just applying to MIT, UCB, and Mich just to see what happens (and partially because my family is Indian, so everyone wants me to go to the best university possible lol). I honestly just want to go to UT, however, I wouldn’t mind going to MIT if accepted (lets hope! :D).

MIT (hopefully)- Reject, I am not being cynical, but it is actually pretty hilarious you think you can get into here lol, because you’re not.
UC Berkeley (oos)- Reject ( Not as funny as MIT, but still pretty funny)
U Mich (oos)-Reject
UT Austin- Match/High match
Texas A&M-Low Match/Safety

Buddy, you need to apply to way more matches and safety schools. If I put money on where you’re going it would be UT Austin. A lot of people on this board are not being straight forward with you. You really need to tell your indian parents ( and I am pakistani, I know what it is like) that they need to reevaluate what schools you are capable of and what schools you’re not getting into. My parents want me to apply to HYP, but I told them to think realistically, and they backed off.

NuclearPakistan1- yea i kinda agree with u, it is pretty laughable that I’m aiming for MIT and UCB. Although, applying never hurt. And also, considering that my dad went to “the MIT of India (IIT)” and was ranked 29th in all of India (India ranks students with a standardized test), he has EXTREMELY high expectations. And also, I don’t think I need to apply to more safeties, I know numerous people who got into Texas A&M with much worse stats than me, so applying to schools like UT Arlington or Texas Tech would be a waste of time.

bumpity bump

bump bump

your rank and SAT scores are low for the high colleges you mentioned (MIT and Berkeley). your SAT II scores look a bit better… but not really good enough for you to be comfortable with. You rank is low for MIT. Rest is fine.

Overall your chances don’t look so hot for your top colleges. Get your SAT up to 2200+, make sure to get your SAT II’s up past 750 each. You need more EC’s and awards. PSAT is a great chacne for you to get of of those awards. it really depends on how much you want it. SOme would be fine with Engineering at Mich, others want to go fro the stars and grab MIT.

thanks Djokovic! yea, my SAT score is kind of low, however I was really distracted because my dog whom I’ve had since I was 5 died the previous day ( I couldn’t really concentrate while reading those long passages in CR). I will make sure to do MUCH better next time around!

Honestly, you should look at more schools; you need more matches…you have no chance at MIT (sorry) and low chances at Mich and Cal. (unless I’m missing a hook or something)

But that doesn’t mean you have to go to A&M.
Have you looked at Georgia Tech, Illinois, Maryland, UCLA, Case Western? These are all amazing for engineering and overall top schools. They seem like better matches–not safeties, but matches. BTW–I visited Maryland and really liked it.

homerslippers, I have no interest in those schools at all, I would honestly rather go to A&M, which I’m positive I’ll get into (I know some people who got in who, to be frank, are idiots).

You really aren’t interested in anything besides those 5?
If it’s a financial thing like you’re not willing to pay for the expensive ones unless they’re as good as those reach schools then okay–I have a similar thing–but if not you should perhaps broaden your vision beyond A&M where you don’t seem to actually want to go.

If not the ones I mentioned, there are plenty of others…

UT is a good match I think, sorry I forgot to mention that.

yea homerslippers, my dad said that he will only pay for an expensive undergrad unless I went to: MIT, UM (he really likes that school a lot more than others for some reason), UCB, or Caltech (I really don’t wanna go there though). I would be perfectly fine going to UT Austin because 3 of my best friends said they want to go there for pre-med.
