Chance me for engineering colleges!

I'm currently looking at 5 colleges, all of which I'm looking at doing a mechanical engineering major with emphasis on thermofluids with a possible business minor. The 5 colleges I'm looking at are: MIT (hopefully), UC Berkeley (oos), U Mich (oos), UT Austin (in-state, but I'm gonna be the first year that the top 10% rule is changed), and Texas A&M (I really don't wanna go here, this is just the safety school).

Anyway, here's my stats

SAT: 1820 (gonna retake after taking PSAT class at my school) 720 M, 620 W, and 480 R (YIKES!)

PSAT: 175 (gonna retake in junior year after taking PSAT class)

GPA: 3.64 UW and 3.73 W (I've only taken 1 AP class so far, AP World History)

Class Rank: Haven't gotten new class rank yet, but will probably be in top 7.5% of competitive high school (rated exemplary by TEA)

ECs: Band- both marching and concert
Math Team
Science Team
Math Mentoring

note: Although I did bad in my Pre-AP Geometry class, I got a 95 in both Pre-AP Alg 2 and Pre-AP Pre-Cal, so I believe that I should get an A in AP Calculus. In addition, I got a 99 in Pre-AP Chemistry, so my AP Chemistry grade will probably be somewhat high.

For next year, I signed up for 5 AP classes, AP Chem, AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC, AP Eng Lang and Comp, and AP Psych

O sorry I forgot to mention this, but I got a 730 sat2 Math2 score and a 750 sat2 Math1. and I got a 10 on my essay on the SAT

bbuuummmpp

Among the 5 colleges you mentioned, I think you have really low chances to get into first 4 colleges mainly becuz of ur SAT score. The last one, idk. Plus, you have unimpressive ECs.

digital43, I really want to get into UT Austin, what do you suggest I do to improve my chances (besides improve SAT because I’m sure it will increase by a lot now because my vocab has gotten much better)? Also, how exactly is that “unimpressive ECs”? Band takes up all of my time during football season and quite a bit of time the rest of the year as well. Also, I am constantly attending meeting or practicing for our UIL Math and Science Team. In addition, Math Mentoring takes up hours after school each week. Oh, and I’m sorry for leaving this out, but I will also be taking a Dual Credit US History class from the local Community College, which will take up 3 hours after school every Monday. Explain how this is “unimpressive ECs”.

oh, and I have about 100 community service hours as of now

your EC’s are very good for UT/A&M/Michigan, which you should get into. what digital43 is talking about is that its fairly easy to particpate in an activity without showing excellence in it. i definetley acknowledge the mentoring program you do, and the juggling between football/band/math, but for MIT and Berkley that isnt even in proximity

thanks hisairness23! and as a huge MJ fan, I approve of your username  haha. And btw, I don’t play football lol, I meant that I’m busy during football season with marching band (I don’t like saying “marching season” lol). And I’m sure that I will get plenty of awards for Band and UIL Math (possibly science, but my mediocre biology knowledge will limit me haha)

hi abcdegsds! i’d say michigan is your best shot (which you should totally be happy about because it’s an awesome school.) the rest i’m not too sure about and it’s also early to tell because you didn’t finish junior year yet. keep working hard and try to raise your gpa and SAT score a bit. you obviously know what you want to study when you get to college, so just make sure you don’t slack and you should be good!
good luck!

thanks beeegee!

Bump!!!

Pretty good. Scary test scores are the biggest problem. Raise those and you should be good.

thanks Cineuless! Yeah, I was really mad when I saw my critical reading score, but I’ve been reading a lot since then and have improved my vocab (also, I’m sure I will get an 800 M and 700 W next time).

bumppppppp

bump bump

i’d say that you’re in at a+m no matter what. UT without a SAT increase in a little uncertain but with a mild increase should be quite doable. U Mich is going to be hard but with an SAT increase is not out of the question. MIT and Berkeley are going to be very difficult but it doesn’t hurt to apply.
good luck!!!

thanks 25or6to4!

Most of the schools are high reaches. I think you have a shot at UM, UT and Texas with an increased SAT score…consider taking ACT as well, you might do better on it!
And your gpa is low for Berkeley, MIT, and UM. I’m not sure about the others but if you take rigorous courses senior year, and there is an upward trend then they might look favorably on your profile! It’s summer now, try to do interesting things. If you can’t get any internships try contests that will make you stand out and show that you are passionate about engineering!
Good luck!

thanks BajaSheep! Yea, I realize that my stats aren’t that great compared to other MIT and UCB applicants, but applying never hurt  and yes, my senior schedule is gonna be pretty intense, its definitely gonna have AP Physics C: Mech and Elec & Mag, plus Calc 3, plus AP English, and maybe even AP Comp Sci

Just apply and hope for the best. Your stats are almost identical to mine. But sadly, I think the answer is no for MIT, which devastated me. It’s a dream school.
