chance me for FSU UCF PENN STATE

Hi I'm currently a senior in high school and am looking to apply to FAMU,FSU,UCF,PENN STATE,VCU,U OF KANSAS,WVU,UWF. my gpa as of last week is a 2.6 uw and a 2.9 w, I know its really low. I really messed up my sophomore year. I have a 1440 total SAT. I am going to take it again definitely. By the end of the year I'll have about 32 credits consisting of mostly AP,Honors, and dual enrollment classes. I've participated in multiple sports including jv football, jv wrestling, jv track and field and varsity baseball. I've also been a member of multiple clubs including nhs, student ambassador, eco club and a couple others. I also have about 150 volunteer hours and am looking at about another 50 more by the end of this semester. So if you guys could please chance me that would be great.

P.S additional information
ethnicity asian
resident of florida
looking to major in biology/ pre-med if possible
If you guys can also think of any other 4 year universities I could possibly be admitted to please mention it. thank you very much

What can your family afford?
Out of state universities will be very costly (ie., well above your EFC). Have you run the net price calculators on the websites?

FAMU is a match, FSU is a high reach, UCF is within reach IF you can improve that SAT score and senior year GPA is higher than that.
Look into UNF it’d be another match, USF within reach.

I must say that 2.6 high school GPA does not make premed very likely, or at least very tough because you’d start with weed out classes.

thank you myos1634 so I have a chance at famu and unf and what do you mean weed out classes

weed out classes are classes that are designed to make the weakest students (those who typically enter with a GPA below 3.3) FAIL. The classes are very hard, there’s a lot of work, and the tests are designed to ensure many students fail. To buck the trend you’d have to study the textbooks on your own over the summer and work at least 3 hours for each hours in class plus go to office hours every week, alternating subjects. It’s a lot of time commitment and even that won’t ensure your success (since the class is designed to fail a percentage of students).

UCF and USF are both possible if you improve your SAT score, so I hope you get a book like Princeton Review’s or Barron’s or Kaplan’s (etc) and study. :)

MYOS1634 thank you for your comment. If i was to get a 1700 or so on my SAT would that improve my chances greatly for getting accepted. Also do you know anything about wvu and u of kansas and whether or not they are a match for me.

if you’re from Florida, WVU and U Kansas will not offer you financial aid to match your EFC so it’s pointless to apply there, even if you were admitted you wouldn’t be able to attend.
If you got your SAT to 1700 yes it’d seriously improve your odds of getting into UCF and USF.
Right now you should really work on improving your senior grades, because it’ll show an upward trend and it’ll prepare you for college better.

so wvu and u of kansas reach

one thing i did not mention in my initial post was that my gpa as of last year was a 3.1 uw and a 3.3 w, I moved to a different school this year and before any grades were issued to possibly change it, they said that they calculate gpas differently. so in essence my school screwed my gpa up

Get the school to rectify the situation, having your other school present your GPA (you must have an academic file with a record of your GPA somewhere, right?)
PSU, WVU and UK are not reaches per se, you could get in, but unless your parents have $35,000 in the bank for each year of school, you wouldn’t be able to go.
Focus your attention on Florida publics and if you really want to, on private schools where you’d provide geographic diversity and would be within range (hopefully with a 3.1 and 1700 SAT…)
Such schools would include: Alfred University (NY), Anna Maria (MA), Augsburg (Minneapolis), Bryant (RI), Campbell (NC), Caroll (MT), Champlain (VT), College of St Mary ( Omaha), Earlham (IN), Elmira (NY), Endicott (MA), Goucher (Baltimore), Guilford (NC), Hartwick (NY), Hiram (OH), Lycoming ¶, Muskingum (OH), Ohio Wesleyan (OH), Rider (NJ), Springfield ( MA), Suffolk (MA), University of Hartford (CT), Washington&jefferson ¶, Whittier (CA), Xavier (LA).

Ask for the free brochures (type the name of the school and “request info” in your browser) to decide which ones look good, and apply to a few. This way you’ll be able to make a choice between different schools and aid packages. Odds are, the Florida schools will be the cheapest. But you never know, and since a few of those are rolling admissions, you could have an admission in hand in December, which always feels good (and until May to compare Financial Aid and make a decision). :)

thanks alot u really helped me out here one last question lol u mentioned in the previous post that I could receive a acceptance letter in December don’t most seniors get their acceptance letters in december

or how does that work as far as I know most applicants apply in October/September

For Florida publics with rolling admissions, it makes sense to apply early Fall. But nationally many colleges have deadlines between January 1 and February 15 (check on each website) and decision letter mailed in March.
If you’re ready to apply, you can apply to rolling admission colleges from the list and have a decision quickly. Your national reply date remains May 1 so you’d have all cards in hand to make a reasonable decision - academic quality of the college, strength of your chosen major, financial aid package, “campus vibe”…

oh ok I thought so, do you know anything about UWF and their admission policies and scores etc.

You’re too low for UWF but you can try as a reach (they’ve got an average of 3.4 with most students scoring above 3*, and about 1500 for SAT CR+M+W)

 • those who are admitted with a GPA below that are typically athletes or legacies or students who somehow got an amazing SAT score for the school, like 1750.

Look into the schools I listed in #9, they would all be within reach for you (ie you have a pretty good shot) and they’re good schools.

Forbes website states that the SAT Composite Range is 900-1090

[University of West Florida - Forbes](University of West Florida)

Yes, that’s CR+M only :). 900 is the bottom 25% and to get in with that, you need to be an athlete or a legacy.

right Im aware of that 1090 would be the top 25% I fall right between those two

Use College Navigator to review admissions at the Florida schools:

[College Navigator - Search Results](<a href=“College Navigator - Search Results”>College Navigator - Search Results)

For example:

UWF:

(25% Percentile/75%Percentile)
SAT Critical Reading
450 550
SAT Math
450 540
SAT Writing
430 530

If you’re between the 25% and 75% range, you have a solid shot at admissions. Above that, you could possibly earn some merit $.

UNF:

SAT Critical Reading
530 620
SAT Math
540 620
SAT Writing
500 590

So, UNF is more selective that UWF. The Florida “public” universities go in the following order for selectivity:
UF > FSU > UCF/USF(main campus) > UNF > all the rest.

If you want to go to school, outside the state, then follow MYOS1634’s advise and look at some of the private schools. Your COA (total Cost of Attendance) could be lower. Once again, look up each school in College Navigator, the net price tab will give you an estimate of your average net price (based on income) and will have a link to that schools net price calculator.

Good Luck!

Hi patriotsfan: for some reason, it always seemed that it was easier to get into UNF, ie., that basically all the kids living nearby got into UNF, whereas not all kids living near UWF did.
@Gator: is it really easier to get into UNF than into FAU, for example?

It’s harder to get into UNF that FAU (in that you need a higher GPA and better test scores).

FAU SAT/ACT (25%/75%):
SAT Critical Reading
480 570
SAT Math
490 580
SAT Writing
480 560
ACT Composite
21 25

FAU GPA of Enrolled Freshmen
Average GPA 3.5
3.75 and Above 26%
3.50 - 3.74 19%
3.25 - 3.49 30%
3.00 - 3.24 21%
2.50 - 2.99 4%

UNF GPA of Enrolled Freshmen
Average GPA 3.72
3.75 and Above 45%
3.50 - 3.74 20%
3.25 - 3.49 20%
3.00 - 3.24 12%
2.50 - 2.99 3%

So UNF applicants have better test scores and much higher GPAs. However, FAU has more overall applicants and accepts a lower %.

FAU
Number of Applicants (fall 2012): 25,726
Percent Admitted: 42%
Percent who enrolled (Yield): 30%

UNF:
Number of Applicants: 10,412
Percent Admitted: 52%
Percent who enrolled: 30%

So FAU looks more selective (42% admit rate vs. 52% for UNF), but the UNF applicants have higher stats and are more competitive.
