Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
If you are Valedictorian don’t you get the first years tuition automatically? Which scholarship are you talking about, 40 Acres? If so, that one is VERY competitive.
I’m still a rookie but the only full scholarship is not actually offered by UT itself but instead comes from regional alumni groups called “Texas Exes” and they offer the “40 Acres Scholarships.” Definitely throw your app in, but just know how competitive it is.
UT does now offer the “Texas Advance” scholarship which provides around $20,000 per year for students who have demonstrated financial need. I think I read the income ceiling limit is $60,000 per year so you don’t qualify for that one.
The only truly full ride option indeed is the 40 Acres Scholarship. It is extraordinarily competitive, and also donor driven.
High achieving applicants demonstrating financial need can sometimes piece together a “full” package through Federal and State grants along with institutional and department scholarships.
As a rule of thumb, UT reserves the majority of their merit aid for current students who have demonstrated excellence at the college level. A lot of universities will use their scholarship budget on the front end to entice high school seniors to attend. UT is not one of those universities.
