Please chance me for Georgia Tech, kind of freaking out about the application!
Hey OceanMan, I think you’re looking pretty good there! The out of state is really, I think, the only thing holding you back. Your SAT is really good and it looks like you’re pretty involved so I think you’ve got a pretty good chance.
A side note though, Comp Sci is probably GT’s most competitive major these days. Are your AP’s computer/programming related? Be careful with that. Other than that, best of luck!
I’m currently taking AP Computer Science. Do you think I should apply to a less competitive major, and then see if I can transfer after getting into the university?
That’s what I would do, or apply undeclared. Most college students change majors once or twice before they find what they really want to do so maybe you should go ahead and experiment. Freshman year is mostly general education courses anyways so it won’t be as major focused as later years. You are allowed to change your major for “free” your freshman year after final withdrawal day (early October) so don’t be worried, you can get where you want to be.
But then again, go with your gut. I think applying for the most popular majors puts more stress on making your other qualities stand out, but that’s just my opinion. With school diversification programs/affirmative action, making yourself unique as a person and in achievement is in some ways growing even more important than just academics and majors. Try to make your application be as personal and unique as possible (without being weird)!
From my high school class last year about 30+ kids were accepted to Tech. At least half of them applied for Comp Sci and made it. All had very similar resumes to yours. Just relax dude! Go with your gut, you’ll feel so much better and you’ll stop second-guessing yourself!
