Chance Me for Mechanical engineering?

I’m getting more worried every second about my chances for admission and was hoping someone can shed some light on my chances.

Stats:
3.2 UW 3.5 W
ACT 35 superscored to 36
SAT 1510

I seem to be an outlier on everything I look at, and I’m getting a lot of conflicting answers.

Also, if I don’t get in, what are my chances of being accepted as a transfer student next year, and what does my college GPA need to be to have a good chance?

I don’t like giving ‘chances’ but tOSU will be concerned about your GPA. You seem to be a very good test taker, considering your ACT and SAT, but engineering is very very hard and they will want to know that you are also a strong classroom student. I think your GPA is very good and it’s certainly above average, but many kids applying to engineering have 4.0 and above. Are there extenuating circumstances for your GPA?

Are you in state or out of state?
What class rank does your gpa put you in at your school? top 10%?
How many AP/DE courses have you taken?

in state
middle 50
7 ap courses

It seems like you had good rigor in your curriculum, but if your rank is below the top 25%, it is likely there are lots of students from your area and school applying as well.

OSU also takes in lots of transfer students. So if you get a good offer (program you want and affordable) from another school and decide later it isn’t working out for you, definitely apply to OSU again.

Here is a summary of the pathways (besides transferring in) available to instate students:

“Once it is determined that you are admissible, you will be considered for enrollment in the college of your intended major.” http://undergrad.osu.edu/apply/freshmen-columbus/who-gets-in

In other words, if you are accepted to the Columbus campus they evaluate you for (in your case) the College of Engineering. The College of Engineering either directly admits you or…

“Students not eligible to directly enroll in the College of Engineering may enroll in Science and Technology and Environmental Exploration (this applies to domestic students only).” https://engineering.osu.edu/academics/admissions

So students that aren’t directly admitted to Engineering "on the Columbus campus must meet these requirements for admission into the College of Engineering pre-major program:

2.5 Ohio State GPA
C- or higher in Math 1151
Credit for one of the following courses: Chemistry 1210, Chemistry 1250, Physics 1250, Biology 2100
1 semester of full-time enrollment as an undergraduate student at Ohio State" https://engineering.osu.edu/academics/admissions

I hope you picked Marion as your alternate campus. Marion is the one with engineering classes and a new science building. “Ohio State Regional campuses operate under an open access admission policy. This means that students who have graduated from an accredited Ohio high school or earned their GED have the opportunity to earn an Ohio State education” http://osumarion.osu.edu/future-students/undergraduate-students/requirements/ If you get deferred you may want to visit Marion and change your campus preference before Marion’s Financial aid deadline. They offer a ton of merit aid and have private student housing complex with private bedrooms/full kitchens in walking distance.

So regardless of how your admission decision for main campus goes, there is definitely a path at OSU, even if you aren’t directly admitted to main campus or the College of Engineering. That’s not necessarily the case at other schools.

If you want to be a Buckeye, you’ll have an opportunity to be one. Whether or not you become one, is up to you.

Thank you for all of the information! I was recently accepted into the University of Cincinnati, so if I don’t get accepted to OSU I was thinking I should just transfer from UC after a year into the OSU engineering program. I’m currently evaluating what courses I need tot take in order to get the right 30 transfer credits.

I also do not think tOSU superscores ACT scores. Also, they do a holistic review, so it is NOT just about your grades, rank and test scores. How have you been involved in your school and your community? These are some things to think about as well. Good luck to you!

If you dont get admitted ch o to an osu branch campus first if you know you want to go to osu columbus. Its the best sure way

I made an account to reply to this, even though it’s been a few months. I’m a rising Junior in the Mechanical Engineering department, and I started out almost exactly where you are now. I went to high school in Cincinnati, 35 on my ACT, but my GPA was something like a 3.5 weighted. I got into OSU, applied to the Honors program after my first semester, and have been rocking it ever since.

I know it’s probably too late and you’ve already got your decision, but you’re going to be fine. I was also worried about how I was gonna do in a pretty competitive engineering program, but everything sorted itself out not long after I got here. Hopefully I’ll see you around Scott Lab sometime

tOSU acceptance rate for engineering is 43%.
