Chance me?

Can someone tell me my chances?

Date applied: October 31st
In state or out of state: In state
Scores/GPA: 3.8 GPA, 24 ACT/1120 SAT
Really good essay. I really think it’s going to help my application.
Major: Computer science/ software engineering (plus I’m a girl which they favor women in engineering)
Applied for Morrill since I’m diverse

I am also going to benefit from their new program that gives students with families that make under 55,000 dollars FULL tuition. (I think)

Played a sport for 4 years (JV, Varsity this year since it’ll be my last year), I work, I have 30 hours of volunteering, and part of a PLTW engineering course at my school.

Another thing to note is that someone from my school was able to get in with a 24 ACT and 3.9 GPA

Thanks!

Zero chance. ACT must be in 29-33 for engineering to even look competetive. SAT must be 1400 at least.

it’s a reach, but not “zero chance” My D got in with a 1350 so the 1400 min is not correct.

@nasteeR Definitely not a zero chance, I know people that have gotten in with similar stats

I’m just anxious to know whether I got in or not.

24 ACT/ 1120 SAT is definitely out of the range, especially for engineering. Your GPA is helping (if it is unweighted), but if you can not provide anything else solid (such as if you are African, your relatives are alumina, you won the state/national champion in your sports, or you donated), ‘Female’ does not help.

@Yinxiao my UW is 3.76 and W is 3.82. And I’m Kurdish, would that help me in any way? Since you don’t find many Kurds

Oh, that is a totally different story. Since you are in state, it is not totally impossible, and your uw GPA is not that bad, actually. I believe they will defer you in stead of deny you, but truly, it is almost impossible to admit you as an engineering student. If you have also applied to art and science department, you may get a chance.

By the way, what’s your race?

@Yinxiao you were right, they did defer me. What does that mean though? Will I get accepted later on or do you think they’ll just reject me? I’m Kurdish American.

@Yinxiao and i only applied as a computer science and engineering major. I think I’ll be retaking the ACT to try and bring up my math score which might help. Right now I have a 25 math and 26 science. Do you think they deferred me to see my senior year report because I’m taking ap physics and calculus this year so if they saw that I have good grades in those classes they’d admit me?

In most of the cases, defer means a deny to the international student, but there is still hope for you since you r a us student ( am I right?) I can tell that you have reached their basic requirements, because they did not deny you straight away, but it is very important that you have submit what ever solid to the university to consolidate their confidence to admit you. Essays and activities are really important, but since you cannot make a change, just forget about it. All what you mentioned are the keys to get the admission, but I believe the most important factors are your ap grades, which you can truly make efforts on, and that is also what the college values the most. Try to get both two ap test as a score of 5, or at least 4. Choose ACT or SAT is your own choice, but I have to remind you, get fully prepared before taking the test. College values both test equally, so if you can make at least 1300 in sat (or equivalent in act), that will help you a lot. Hope the best for you.

Recently, I get admitted by RPI, and my SAT math is 800, my SAT2 math is 800, and my SAT2 physics is 730. If you do need help on science and math, shall contact me.

Remember, You are a Kurdish American. You have the advantage that is born with. don’t waste ur oppertunity

@Yinxiao Yes I am a US student, I’m a citizen. The only thing I can do is send OSU my midyear report for my first semester grades. I’m not able to retake the ACT in February because they only accept material before the February 1st deadline (I contacted them and they said I can’t). But for the first semester I was able to end with a 97 in AP calc, 85 in AP physics, A’s in the rest of my classes, as well as A’s in my College level classes (composition 1 and psychology). I’m not able to show them my AP testing though since I’m taking that exam in May.

So I’ll have to stick with my 24 ACT. I really wanted to retake though because I know I can improve my math, it’s just with the previous ACT’s I either did not have enough time to prep or I didn’t prep correctly.

I’d say, yes, you have to maintain the score, and from your description, your score is impressive. You show your strength in math and a very possible 5 in AP physics.
And even though your sat/act is a little bit low, you still get a chance to get in. (the green range)

However, you have to understand engineering is challenging. if you have any other option majors, I can guarantee you will in. If you simply stick with computer science and software engineering, may god help you. If you have any further questions, feel free to simply contact chess2009@yeah.net. I can send you more useful information through that, and hope you the best.

@Yinxiao I definitely get Engineering is a tough major. I just want to major in software engineering so I can learn coding because I want to make and design apps. The other major I want to go into is communications or interactive media studies. I want to study user interface design. So I was thinking double majoring in those two? But I did email my admission counselor saying I understand my ACT isn’t competitive enough but I’d gladly take pre-engineering courses to get into that major

Ohio State might be a stretch, but Ohio University is well within reach. If you’re doing computer science, the school you attend won’t make a lick of difference. You’re employable out of college. Also Columbus is a major hub for tech jobs. What employers are really looking for is what you know. If you’re proficient in Java, C#, etc. and you have a degree, you’ll have a job lined up.

@coolguy40 I got deferred so it isn’t that much of a “stretch”

@Hm0416 Looks like I was wrong. Congratulations!

@coolguy40 thank you, but I’m anxious because I’ll have to wait awhile for a final decision. Given my stats what do you think my chance of acceptance is if I were to send OSU my mid year report (which shows: An A in AP calculus, B in AP physics, A in both of my college credit plus classes, and A’s in my two regular classes (one being an engineering course)) ?
