I know that College confidential is a weird place for this because most here are phenomenal students...

Okay so here it goes.
I am applying to my state flagship, UMaine Orono, as a Mech. engineer major. It is not a selective school but I am deathly afraid of rejection and I just wanted to see what the general C.C. community thinks.

I have been a poor student. My first two years of school my GPA was in the 1's in all academic level classes. My grades have had a huge surge upwards, I take a good amount of AP and honors classes and my GPA is averaged out to around 2.5uw. I took AP American History last year, Honors English 3, AP European History this year (got a 93 on my report card for it), AP Computer Science (got a 99 last quarter). My GPA last quarter was a 3.6 unweighted. My SAT is around 1900 combined.

I've been told my essay was great by teachers and by some on this site and they explain my bad grades and the reason for improvement. My recs are great, including one by my AP History teacher (both years) who offered to write it for me. He is a department head (I don't know if that makes any difference). My other rec is from my AP Computer Science teacher who also offered to write it. My counselor rec, to my knowledge, is good as well.

My ECs are fairly weak though: I played football for two years and have been holding down a 15-20 hour / week job for 2 years. I haven't been much involved in school because I am not allowed to live at home if I don't have a job.

Also, I am a middle class white male with no hook, although I will be the first in my family to go to college, out of 3 other siblings, parents, and many cousins. I think my counselor stressed that on my rec. I also go to one of the top 10 (maybe even top 5) public high schools in the state and my school sends many students into the UMaine system.

So, in essence, I'm just looking for some reassurance that I'll be accepted. It's only a matter of two or three weeks before my letter comes. It's not really worth stressing over, but I hope I won't need to attend a local community college...

Thanks :(
