Here are my stats: 3.76 GPA - my school does not show UW GPA. My school only offers 3 AP classes and none were even available to me to take because of scheduling conflicts. It’s not my fault I couldn’t take any it’s bc of my school. My class rank is 3/23. I would guess my UW GPA is close to 3.2-3.25. My school runs on a 93-100 for an A scale so that is one of the reasons why. Most of my grades are between 90-92 so it tanks my UW GPA. SAT: 1390 EC: played 2 varsity sports all 4 years of high school. Captain of 1 of the sports for junior and senior. I help out a lot in our church. I have been a part of my school’s high school band, jazz band and marching band all 4 years. I live in state and am black/Hispanic. I realize my GPA is deflated bc of my school and bc of our grading system and I know that public school students with 4.4s and 1100 are more competitive for PSU but I hope my SAT and ECs make up for it.
I forgot to mention that I choose the major molecular biology as a premed. Sorry for not including that in my thread.
What major did you apply for?
@bodangles I applied as a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major as a premed.
I also forgot to mention that I did apply with the summer session
Weighted GPA: 3.76 - my school does not report UW GPA. My school has a 93-100 A AND 85-92 B scale.
My school only offers 3 AP classes and none were even available to me to take because of scheduling conflicts. It’s not my fault I couldn’t take any it’s bc of my school. My class rank is 3/23. I also have a couple of C’s because I made the mistake of taking 8 classes sophmore year.
SAT:1390 (first time)
Race: Black
In-state
100k-200k income range.
EC: 2 varsity sports all 4 years (I was captain of both sports my junior and senior year)
HS Band, HS Jazz Band and HS Marching Band all 4 years. (Played 2 instruments)
Have been helping out in the church nearly every week( volunteering and alter serving)
I know that my application is decent except for GPA. I know that this is most of what goes into the decision but will everything else make up for my GPA being 3.76. Also will PSU take my class rank and school grading system into consideration?
I don’t want to go to Temple or Pitt and I definitely want to attend a large state school so could you guys give me other schools to think of?
I think you should be ok. Your GPA and your test scores are both ok and your class rank will show Penn State that you go to a very competitive HS. I get it. My daughter has a 3.8 GPA in HS and she is not in the top 25% of her class! Some schools are like that.
If you don’t get into fall, I would expect that you would get in for summer. However, I am not all that familiar with the major you selected so I am not sure how selective the admission process is for molecular biology. If worse comes to worse and you are denied you can call and ask to be reconsidered for DUS (undecided) and I think you will have no trouble.
I am really worried that I won’t get in because PSU is by far my #1 choice and I would do anything to go there. Since I am applying to the College of Science, how higher are my chances than if I applied to one of the more selective schools like Smeal or Engineering?
