Chance me for the following- Rising senior with HUGE upward trend!

Hi guys, I’d appreciate if you can chance me for these schools on my list.

Preface: Bit about myself- I was an Indian international student in Singapore who moved to the US (Virginia) after freshman year. I didn’t really take the first two years of high school seriously but I have a huge upward trend (my unweighted GPA for each year respectively is 3.59, 3.54, and 3.875). I got a C+ in my Chemistry Honors class sophomore year for the second semester (first semester I had achieved a B+) but I completely aced my Junior year (earning an A+ in AP Macroeconomics). My interests are not even STEM-related- I want to major in history as a lot of my academic accomplishments are in that field, or go straight into business schools (depends on the school I’m applying to). My weighted GPA (the GPA reported to colleges) is the GPA of my sophomore and junior years combined as I didn’t attend my current private school during my freshman year.

UW GPA: 3.66
W GPA (reported number): 4.04 (school does not rank)
ACT: 33 (35 E/34 R/29 M/35 S) I got a 21 in W but who cares really.

Honors: AP Scholar, Honorable Mention on National Spanish Exam Level 3

AP Scores: AP Euro (5) APUSH (5) AP Macro (5) AP Lang (5) AP World (self-studied 5)

SAT II: US History- 770

Recs: I know they’ll be amazing since one is written by the vice-principal who also taught my AP Euro class and has seen me grow as a student and the others are written by my Lang and Macro teachers, both of whom saw me do very well.

Awards: National History Day South-East Asia Winner, National History Day Virginia State First Place

Languages: Fluent in English, Tamil and Spanish, proficient in Mandarin Chinese

Extracurriculars:

National Security Archives internship- I had an undergraduate level internship at the National Security Archives. I researched and indexed declassified government documents and wrote historical analysis reports to aid Archive researchers.

NHD- Awards: NHD- 1st place South-East Asia, NHD- 1st place Virginia state (already mentioned above)

Drama- Been participating since freshman year and had major roles and lead roles in school productions.

Relay for Life leader- Led Relay for Life team to raise nearly $2700 dollars for the American Cancer Society.

VP of Young Democrats- Was Secretary and am now Vice-President of the club. I helped host mock caucus/primary elections at school to raise civic awareness. I also interned at the John Foust for Congress and the Mark Warner for Senate campaigns.

President of WWA- Founded this club when I came to my new school. Raised nearly $700 dollars for a rainwater harvesting facility in India to help villages without water. Interned at the Dhan Foundation in India to help oversee development projects.

Blue Earth Capital intern- Interned at my dad’s hedge fund and learned a lot about finance, portfolio construction and investment strategies.

Varsity Tennis- Been on my Varsity tennis team since sophomore year and play 3rd doubles.

Chance me for: IU Kelley Business School direct admit, U Maryland College Park Smith Business School (dad went here for grad school), Virginia Tech Pamplin School of Business, BU Questrom School of Business, Northeastern D’Amore-McKim School of Business, William and Mary (applying as history major), BC Carroll School of Business, UVA (applying as history major), Georgetown McDonough School of Business.

Quick question about Kelley Business School direct admit: I know I meet their criteria in terms of my reported GPA and ACT score, but my reported GPA is only for two years and the GPA is separated across transcripts. They say they’ll take the highest number off the transcript- do I qualify for direct admit or not?

Thank you!~ hyungiwosotha

Honestly, I don’t know much about business schools/history major since I’m a science person (kinda hate history lol) and planning on going into medicine, BUT I feel that
-your GPA could have been better, yes
-I’ve heard 34+ on ACT is what you should aim at for highly selective schools
-APs are great
-SAT II is great, but might want a few more? check application prereqs
-your ec’s are pretty great. they’ll probably be the strongest part of your app. embrace them

I’m a rising senior, so please take my analysis with a grain of salt, because it’s an unprofessional opinion + I know next to nothing about what these specific schools require/their averages/etc.
hope i helped at least a little?

@ambitious2468 yes, thank you so much! The only real prereqs for SAT IIs are for UVA and Gtown so I will be taking two more this fall, and will expect similar scores.

I think that if you write about your ECs in ways that make them shine and demonstrate how unique you are (which I think you are) then you’ll get into any of those schools.

Yes I agree with everyone else, EC’s are your definite strong point and they will help differentiate you from the crowd of applicants. UVA is a very difficult school to get into unless your a Virginia native, so that will help you a bunch.

EC’s are interesting and AP scores are great. You’re definitely competitive for the schools you’re applying to. Since I’m taking the US history test soon and you did really well, what prep book did you use? Thanks and good luck!

@ambitionsquared I actually took APUSH so the subject test was the day after the APUSH exam. I literally didn’t know the format of the test and read Kaplan on the way to the testing centre to brush up a bit since the test is more facts specific. If you take APUSH though you should be fine.

I think most of these schools could be match/high match for you while Northeastern, GT, and UVA might be low match/match. Your EC’s are spectacular. Do well on your essays/supplements and I’'m sure you’ll get into all. Would it be possible to get involved in some FBLA activities seeing that you’re pursuing business?

@RiceFarmer the problem is that there’s no FBLA club at school and since I was new to this country, having moved from abroad, I didn’t know about it at all as a possible thing to pursue. To be honest I think the value of pursuing things related to your major is overrated and what you really should do is pursue things you’re interested in- for example, the guy at Georgetown who was at the business school told me that he had NO business-related extracurriculars and classes in high school. Thanks for your comments though!

Also can anyone answer my question about Kelley direct admit (located at the bottom of the post) and/or tell me about how my C+ in Chemistry Honors for a semester grade in my sophomore year factors into my admission chances if I have a huge upward trend?

IU Kelley Business School direct admit= Accepted
U Maryland College Park Smith Business School = Accepted
Virginia Tech Pamplin School of Business = Accepted
BU Questrom School of Business= Waitlisted
Northeastern D’Amore-McKim School of Business= Accepted
William and Mary = Accepted
BC Carroll School of Business= Toss up b/w accpeted/waitlisted
UVA = Accepted
Georgetown McDonough School of Business = Accepted

@ikooldiscovery you’re saying I get waitlisted at BU but accepted at Georgetown? How does that work?

That chancer doesn’t have a clue about admissions.

@TomSrOfBoston can you chance me then?

IU Kelley Business School direct admit=Safety
U Maryland College Park Smith Business School = Safety
Virginia Tech Pamplin School of Business = Safety
BU Questrom School of Business= Match
Northeastern D’Amore-McKim School of Business= Match
William and Mary = Match
BC Carroll School of Business= Match
UVA =Match since in state, Reach if you were OOS
Georgetown McDonough School of Business = Low Reach

@TomSrOfBoston do you know how a) my C+ will factor into this if I have a huge upward trend and b) how direct admission to IU Kelley Business School would work if my grades are separated on two transcripts? Just asking since you seem knowledgeable.

I doubt that it will have any effect since you plan to be a business student. if you wee applying as a science major it may have an effect.

^ @TomSrOfBoston what about the direct admit if my grades are on two different transcripts?

Your EC’s are quite impressive, and they seem to be your strongest point. If you manage to write essays of high quality emphasizing on your extracurriculars, I think you’d be able to get in all of your choices (except for maybe Georgetown, but it is definitely worth giving a shot). Best of luck to you

I’m sorry, but I am not familiar with any of these business schools. I think UVA would accept you since you’re in state. Also, as long as you meet the medians for each business school, I don’t see why you wouldn’t have a good shot at getting in.
