Chance me for UCLA 2024?

Hi guys! I know these ‘chance me’ things aren’t always the most helpful to ask about but I was really just wondering and wanted to see what others thought. I am currently a rising senior about to start my college apps and am aiming for UCLA as an in-state applicant. So heres a little bit about me:

Sophomore year classes:
AP Environmental Science (A, A; 5 on exam)
Beginning Dance (A, A; was a PE requirement)
Integrated Math 3 (A, A)
French 2 (A, A)
Honors English (A, A)
Precalculus (A, A)
World Cultures (A, A)
Honors Chemistry (A, A; counted as a 5 point class like an AP so it offered a GPA bump)

Junior year classes:
AP Lang (A, A; 4 on exam)
US History (A, A)
AP Calc AB (A, A; 5 subscore on BC exam)
French 3 (A, A)
Late Arrival (free period)
AP Psychology (A, A; 4 on exam)
AP Chemistry (A, A; 4 on exam)
AP Calc BC (A, A; 5 on exam)

upcoming Senior year classes:
AP Lit
AP Comp Sci Principles
Health (graduation requirement)
Physics
AP Statistics
AP Gov & Econ
AP French
Teacher Assist

-my highschool is on the 4x4 block schedule so we have 4 classes one term and another 4 the second half of the school year which is why we have late arrival/early release free periods and are able to take calc AB/BC in one year
-weighted GPA: 4.26
-not sure what my unweighted is
-also not sure how to calculate my UC gpa (i tried rogerhub but was confused)
-I got 2 B’s my freshman year in two regular classes but I also took AP human geography (4 on exam) and got an A that year

Highest SAT score: 1590 (790 reading/writing & 800 math)
SAT Math II: 800
-about to take SAT Chemistry and hoping to get a 780-800

Extracurriculars/Other stuff:
-peer tutoring through my school where I helped other students with various subjects for a few hours a week on my own time
-played soccer for 8 years
-active member of CSF on campus
-I try to go to as many community based volunteer events as possible (not really for volunteer hours I just like doing it)
-attended the California Forestry Challenge in 2017 with a team from my school and my environmental science teacher and we placed 2nd overall among many other schools (this was more of a one time thing)
-got a job at a local movie theater this past summer ans started working a lot
-started volunteering with Mercy General Hospital this past summer; 3 hours per week with a 1-year commitment
-started volunteering with a STOP STIGMA organization that combats stigma against mental health this past summer
-took 2 summer classes at my local community college this past summer (As in both)

This is basically it and the part im most worried about is my ECs. I dont really play an instrument, do any school sports, and im not really the captain or president of any team or club. I havent really got any rewards or recognition either. Please let me know what you think and thanks to anyone that helps!

Are Calc AB and BC each one semester? What about Integrated Math and Pre-Calc? Are they each a semester course?

Correct me if I’m wrong. It looks like you have 12 weighted semesters:
AP Environmental Science, Honors Chemistry, AP Lang, AP Calc AB (one semester), AP Psychology, AP Chemistry, AP Calc BC (one semester)

And 12 unweighted semesters:
Integrated Math 3 (one semester?), French 2, Honors English, Pre-Calculus (one semester?), World Cultures, US History, French 3

If that is the case, then your UC GPA should be 4.33 capped and 4.50 uncapped

Yes so I took Calc AB from August to December of my junior year and then I took Calc BC from January to May of my junior year. Similarly, I took IM3 from August to December of my sophomore year and then precalc from January to May of my sophomore year. Hope that clears things up and thanks for your response!

@spindip Are any of your other classes single semester? If so, that changes your UC GPA.

This is the UC GPA’s I get based on your posted information:
Unweighted UC GPA: 4.00
Fully Weighted UC GPA: 4.47
Weighted and Capped UC GPA: 4.27

What is your intended major? You look like a competitive applicant but so are the majority of students that apply to UCLA. Consider UCLA a Reach school but definitely possible. Make sure you first identify 2 safety schools and a couple of target schools before finalizing your list.

Best of luck.

@lkg4answers I guess all my classes are single semester? I take four classes from Aug-Dec and then another four from Jan-May with a total of eight classes each school year. So for example in my junior year I took AP Lang, US history, Calc AB, and French 3 from Aug-Dec and then I took AP Psych, AP Chem, Calc BC, and a free period from Jan-May. Our midterms are then in October for the first semester and March for the second semester. Not sure if that helped clear anything up and thanks so much for taking the time to reply!

@Gumbymom Would that UC GPA be considered competitive or decent in the least? I’m sorry I’m very new to this and not really sure how it all works so thank you for taking the time to respond! Also I really don’t know what major I plan on and I am very undecided on it.

Yes your GPA is competitive but major can make a difference on your chances.

  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores
  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience
  • Considered: First generation college student, Geographical residence, AP/IBHL exam scores
  • Note: GPA, test scores, course work, number of and performance in honors and AP courses most important. Essay considered. Strong senior program important. Extracurricular activities, honors and awards also reviewed. For the College of Letters and Science, the applicant's major is not considered during the review process. The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science admits students by declared major, with more emphasis on science and math programs. The School of Nursing also places more emphasis on science and math programs and requires the submission of an additional supplemental application. The School of the Arts and Architecture; Herb Alpert School of Music; and the School of Theater, Film and Television admit students by declared major (within the school), and put more emphasis on special talents through a review of portfolios and/or auditions, which are the most significant admission factors for these schools.

Hi! I got into UCLA as a freshman admit, and I currently attend Berkeley. Go Bears!

I would say that you have a really good shot at getting in, depending on your major. I would suggest doing more extracurriculars that are related to your major. Do you have any clue what you’d like to major in?

Also, I would start the personal insight questions NOW. They are incredibly important.
Let me know if you have any questions; I’m happy to help.
