I’m new to College Confidential, but I would like to know what you think my chances are at these schools:
University of Southern California
New York University
University of Michigan- Ann Arbor
Emory University
Georgia Tech
UGA
I live in Georgia, if that is helpful (:
Female/Asian
Hook: Not sure if this counts, but I was adopted from China.
My stats:
GPA: 3.86 UW, 4.39 W
Rank 21/484- in top 10% of class
ACT: 31.
Awards: 3 Academic Letters (awarded to students who have made a GP of 4.0 (weighted) in the previous year’s fall and spring semesters), AP Scholar with Distinction, Best Selling Author (students at my school were given the opportunity to coauthor a book, each of us writing our own chapter. The book reached #1 on Amazon in 2 categories)
Rigor: By graduation, I would have taken 11 AP classes.
Before Senior year: AP World History, APUSH, AP Lang, AP Biology, AP French, AP Psychology
Senior Year: AP Gov, AP Econ, AP Calc BC, AP Lit, AP Physics C
Work:
I worked at the Kumon Center my junior year
I have babysat 2 girls for 3 summers working full time hours.
Clubs:
National Honor Society
Science National Honor Society
MuAlphaTheta
Beta Club (for students with a 3.0 GPA or higher)
-I have other minor activities that I have participated in, but I don’t think they make much of an impact since they were from sophomore and freshman year.
Thanks!
I cannot afford to pay full tuition myself, but I am not too financially unstable to where the schools are far out of reach. My concern for this post was to see if I had a shot at being accepted first.
What is your intended major?
For UMich, your GPA is around admission average while your ACT is above 25th percentile but below admission average. OOS admission rate at UMich is near 20%. Your current stat would make it a reach to low reach for you. The mid 50 ACT of UMich is 30-34 this year. Try to bring up your test score for a better chance.
I knew I forgot something! My intended major is psychology, but I am not positive that is the track I want to take. I am also thinking of a major in biology or neuroscience.
Chances for UGA are really good. Middle 50% admitted UGA GPA has been 3.81-4.03ish. Middle admitted ACT scores have also been 28-32 so you’re good there as well. You also get in-state tuition for GA which would help a lot for UGA and Tech.
As for Tech, your chances are ok. I would put Tech at a high match to low reach. You might see yourself getting in for summer, so that’s something to consider.
USC is a reach, but your stats just barely meet the average which could work out.
Emory would also be a reach, but some pros are that you’re in-state and the programs you’re interested in are well regarded there.
NYU is iffy. I know someone who got into NYU but not UGA, so I suppose it just depends on what they’re looking for this year.
Your chances to get into UMich are slim. The major factor working against you here is being OOS. Higher scores on the ACT would help. I also agree that Georgia Tech is questionable for psychology.
I was accepted into UMich LSA Early Action! Tech decisions come out this Saturday, and even if it might not be the best school for psychology, I am still keeping it as an option for financial reasons (in state). If I am accepted and decide to go, I will try to change my major to biology.
I am bringing this post back to see if anyone wants comment to see how my chances compare now that I’ve been accepted to Michigan (if that means anything really)
Nothing new to add except my first semester grades are pretty solid (all As), and I started a tutoring someone in math twice a week.
I am also a first Gen student which I forgot to mention.
Thanks!
Also: I did not apply to Emory, so I do not need a chance for that!
@billcsho I have not. I am filling out the CSS and FAFSA and I am going to wait to see what the financial package looks like. That is the only way I will be able to tell how affordable Mich (and any other OOS school) really is.
@Abwee67 It final FA package is not likely to be out before May 1. You will receive an estimated FA package soon which is still subject to change as the tuition rate will be change and they will ask for W2 and other forms for verification later. It does not make sense to skip the NPC step as it costs you nothing to doing that and it is pretty accurate unless you have a complicated situation. One should actually do that before submitting application.
@billcsho I agree. I did not skip the NPC because I didn’t think it wasn’t important, i just do not have all the informatiom right now. Besides, I am still submitting FAFSA and CSS, which will give a better estimate.
My final decision of what college to pick will definitely be based somewhat on funds, but I am not ruling anything out yet based off what a NPC says, since that might not even be accurate (not every calculator is)
Thank you for the input though. When I have all the information ready, I will definitely see what the NPC says.
