Chance me for UT Austin

I have a kinda bad rank but good other stuff and I think that I am on the borderline of getting in even though rank is a HUGE deal in Texas. I’m a senior at at very competitive high school in Texas.
SAT: 2260. 800 reading 740 writing 720 math
PSAT:229
Weighted GPA, rank: 5.04(out of 6) 143/647
Unweighted GPA: 3.8(out of 4)
SAT 2 Biology M: 750
taking 11 AP classes by end of high school. So far have taken Bio,stat, english lang, psych, Calc AB, World History
This year the AP’s I’m taking are Gov, Econ, Calc BC, English lit, Chem
Got 5’s on all except 3 on bio.
I have been on the school swim team for 4 years and am a regional qualifier. I am a HOSA officer and state qualifier.
I am a male and Indian.
I am applying for natural science pre-med.

A class rank of 22.1% (143 out of 647) probably makes UT Austin a super-reach. Most spots there are taken by automatic-admit applicants in the top 7%, and class rank is likely one of the biggest factors for selecting among the other applicants for the few remaining spots.

It does look like you would get automatic admission to other Texas public universities. With your PSAT score, you are likely to make National Merit, so there may be good scholarships at some of them.

You are similar to my son who also has high test scores and good grades. The competition at the competetive public high schools in Texas is fierce . His school doesn’t rank outside of the top 10%. (This year auto-admit is the top 8%).

I heard a lot of strong students from my son’s school were not accepted into UT last year. A lot were offered CAP. You could get in (crapshoot) or offered a waitlisted spot…the problem with the waitlist is that most majors are picked over.

Have you seen this list?

You should be an auto–admit for A&M. Just get your application in soon. Baylor will give you a big scholarship as will UTD.

If you get NMSF then go to Baylor. It’s a smaller school, helpful community, smaller classes, great merit scholarship for NMSF and good internship and research opportunities. Why become another number among 55,000 students of UT? UTD is a commuter school, you wouldn’t get a good college experience.
