Senior Year:

AP Biology:
AP US Government and Politics:
Honors British Literature 12:
Honors Precalculus:
Honors Latin IV:

(I didn't take AP Literature because of scheduling; band I could not take because AP Biology is a double-period class).

Our grades for the first semester are not in yet, but my grades for the first quarter were as follows: A (Honors British Literature 12), A+ (Honors Latin IV), A (AP Biology), A+ (AP US Government and Politics), A- (Honors Precalculus)

My final grades should all be A's and, judging by our school's "Parent Portal," they are.

Essays: Although you are unable to judge them, I thought that they were beneficial to my application. Excluding GPA, I'd venture to say that my essays are one of the better aspects of my application. Teacher/Guidance Counselor recommendations are equally strong.

I'm most concerned with my ACT/SAT scores; both have been sent in, though I think the SAT better accentuates my talents (that is to say, the writing section). I do not know why my math score is so horrendous (math is certainly not a talent, but a 570 is far below my potential...my grades, I feel, are not inflated). I'm, therefore, convinced that my scores are the result of little preparation. I have always put my school grades first, so SAT/ACT always got put aside; furthermore, I have this nasty habit of running out of time on the math/science ACT sections! Otherwise, I'm almost certain, those scores would be much higher.

....but, to cease my ranting, what do you think of my chances?

Here are the schools that I have applied to (I have already been accepted by Miami University [of Ohio], Ohio Wesleyan University, College of Wooster, and Washington and Jefferson College):

Washington and Lee University
Gettysburg College
George Washington University
Kenyon College
College of William and Mary
Juniata College
Flagler College

Washington and Lee and the College of William and Mary, in my own opinion, are my biggest reaches.

What are you interested in studying & where, specifically? “Good schools” will evaluate different parts of your application very differently so it’s important to know if you want valid help from us  Overall though, you look pretty good. Maybe look into an EC outside of school, like volunteering at a hospital etc.

I’m certain you’ll have no trouble getting in everywhere. Your GPA + ECs are excellent; I don’t know why you’d bother to post a chance thread. That SAT/ACT score is the only thing lacking in your app, but I’d imagine you’ll blow most of those schools out of the water. Of course, out of state status might see you rejected from a couple of them, but you’re already into some great schools as it is. Don’t sweat it :)

Best of luck. Care to chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1276395-post-application-chances-top-schools.html

@Ceildh8: Ah, you’re right! I ought to have included those details. I have a strong interest in history; to be specific, I have a passion for US History (Colonial through the Reconstruction periods, especially). Clearly, though, that is an interest; it is not a determined major or focus. I would be entering undecided, but I hope to pursue a degree where that interest can be engaged. Washington and Lee has a strong focus in US History (Robert E. Lee is buried there, in fact!) and Gettysburg College is self-explanatory. George Washington University is one of the largest schools on my list; they have many offerings, including archaeology (which I hope to take a class or two of to see if there is a lasting spark of interest), and I would not be limited there. The Smithsonian is in close proximity. Juniata College offers Museum Studies at the undergraduate level (it is only one of twelve). The College of Wooster also offers archaeology; they have a nice program and I have interviewed with their faculty. Anyway, I could go on and on…every school I have selected for one reason or another.
Thank you (and that’s a good point. For an outside extracurricular, I’ve been looking to volunteer at a local museum/estate)!

@Freddy1185: Ah, thank you! It is a relief to have such news (I’ve been worried sick over the ACT/SAT)! I expect a rejection from William and Mary because of the OOS competition, but I won’t let it bother me. I’m confident in the majority of my schools, but I wonder about Gettysburg and Washington and Lee (they are among my favorites…the other two being George Washington and Wooster). I posted to gain additional opinions; I wouldn’t want to be /overly/ confident (that, I imagine, would make a rejection especially painful).

Thanks again!

Im currently a first year (freshman) at Gettysburg College and I can’t praise the history professors here enough. I too am very interested in US history (specifically the civil war) which is nice because their is an entire minor dedicated to studding the Civil War here. Plus, a lot of the professors here are at the top of their field and they are more than wiling to talk!

I am no admissions official, but I wouldn’t sweat your chances of admission based on my own experience. Furthermore, I wouldn’t b shocked if you got a nice merit scholarship. I had a 3.74 weighted gpa and a 1980 SAT and I got in with a merit scholarship. I did have a lot of Civil War extracurricular that could have helped tho haha :).

Anyway, if you have any questions about Gburg in general or the history program don’t hesitate to ask!

I am a legacy at William and Mary- and I have no problem telling you that you will, in my opinion, have a great shot. Don’t worry too much about the specifics, just trust in your great extras, your GPA, and your (other than math) extremely high SAT scores. Everyone has something working against them, and it it lucky that yours really won’t keep you from getting into some of these great places.

@Gillyy: Thank you so much for your reply! The Civil War (which is the most intriguing aspect of America’s history, in my opinion) minor is what attracted me to the college. I was quite pleased when, upon visiting Gettysburg’s website, I was confronted with: “Students and the Civil War,” and the internships and opportunities available for said students.

I fell very much in love with the campus [when I visited last month]. I had been to Gettysburg before, of course, but I had never been on the college campus.

—> “Merit scholarship” —> That cheered me right up! I’d be ecstatic if I received both an acceptance and merit aid. I must wait until March/April for the decision, though.

I’d love to be involved with Civil War extracurricular activities, but I haven’t had many opportunities (although, I confess, I’ve made it a habit to pester a friend about taking me with her to reenactments. And she doesn’t even like Civil War history!) Hopefully, if I attend Gettysburg College, I can compensate for lost time?

Again, I really appreciate your reply. Thank you!

@thawowtso: Truly? I was almost certain that my ACT/SAT would be (100%) the death of my acceptance chances. I’m thankful for your input!

No problem!

You would be able to make up for lost time and then some! Gettysburg College has its own Civil War reenactment unit as well as a more general civil war club. Along with the minor, Gburg also has the Civil War institute and there are many opportunities for students to get involved with it! There are also opportunities to work (and I mean get paid) with the libraries department of special collections and interact with relics both from the college’s past and the civil war.

Plus, with the sesquicentennial upon us there is no better time to be a civil war enthusiast at gburg haha :)
