White male from New Jersey.

SAT breakdown:
Overall 2310
800 CR
730 M
780 Writing

That is my superscore. My highest individual score is 2260 with the same scores in CR and W but 680 M.

My GPA is 3.4 UW. I will have taken 5 AP's and numerous other honors courses by the time I'm a senior.

-EC's-
- I've been volunteering at the local children's hospital for three years and serve on the Volunteer's Council with 10 of my peers. I've accumulated about 150 hours of service at the hospital.

I was accepted into to the freshman transition team at my high school after a thorough selection process. Juniors and seniors in the program essentially mentor incoming freshman throughout the year.

I attended the Washington Workshops summer seminar during the summer of my sophomore year.

I have been a member of the track team for 3 years and will continue to run during my senior year.

I served on my local congressman's election campaign during the 2008 elections.

I am a member of the Young Democrats at my school and serve on the executive board. I've been in the club since my freshman year.

I am a member of the Academic Challenge team at my school.

I started the Financial Investment and Analysis club with a friend.

I have worked over the summer at my local pool as a lifeguard since sophomore year.

I attend a highly ranked public school which is nationally recognized.

I will be taking two SAT ll's in October and will probably score above 700 in both.

I have two excellent recommendations from teachers, and one from my Congressman.

As you can see, I have dedicated myself to a my local hospital and show commitment by not just being a volunteer, but by serving on the executive board. My other main focus is politics, which should help.

Your chancing is really appreciated and I'll gladly return the favor if you just post a link in your response.

Bump 10char

I think you have a really good shot, honestly.

At which ones…?

hmm with stats like yours, you could actually consider applying at some Ivy’s; you might stand a chance there. Of course, that depends on whether you want to or not.

TCNJ- probably safety
Villanova - low match/safety
Vanderbilt -high match/lowreach
William and Mary -match
UVA - low match, probably in
UMD College Park - safety
Emory - match
Boston College - low match, most likely in
Notre Dame - match
UNC Chapel Hill - match
Lehigh - low match

i think you can get into all those colleges. your standardized tests are good and ecs are good. i cant really judge your school grades but yeah. i think you can get into all those colleges. can you chance me too? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/747066-my-chances-please.html</a></p>

I think you have a great shot at all of those schools. maybe find some more reaches? why not Duke? Your ECs recs and SATs are great, but your GPA will hurt you rchances. work hard to get straight A’s from now on, and you could get into a lot of those schools. good luck!
chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/736144-chance-upcoming-senior-my-school-picks.html</a></p>

Unholy sigma, the best thing you can do for next year is to try to bump up your GPA as much as possible. With a 3.4 unweighted average, Vanderbilt, UNC, UVA, Emory, ND, and probably also BC, you are a reach applicant (although I think you should still apply to all and see).

With UVA in particular (I know this school better than the other schools on your list), a high SAT score helps, but the emphasis is really on how well you’ve done in school. At my competitive in-state high school, for instance, kids I know who have applied to UVA with 2300+ SATs but under 3.6-3.7ish GPAs have been rejected. Still, you should definitely apply.

I really appreciate the constructive criticism barq. All these positive reviews were beginning to make me wonder whether responders knew what they were talking about. I’m not sure how much I can improve during my senior year, but I’ll definitely work my ass off to finish strong. Hopefully the high SAT balances the low gpa out, but at the end of the spectrum I’m looking at, many applicants have both aspects in shape which is obviously not the case with me.

I’ll keep my hopes up though, and definitely apply to the schools even if they may be reaches XD.

DO NOT go by that, im not going to rank you but that is just flat out wrong, your GPA is definitely going to hurt you

Yeah I wasn’t putting much weight on that…

Buuuuuuump

“DO NOT go by that, im not going to rank you but that is just flat out wrong, your GPA is definitely going to hurt you”

I disagree. I don’t think he should apply for Ivies just for the sake of it, but if there is an Ivy League school that he left out fearing he couldn’t get in, I’d say just to go for it and give it a chance. If you don’t throw yourself in the running you’ll never know, and if you really do want it it’s worth a shot.

All schools calculate GPAs differently. At some high schools a 90 is an A-, at other high schools a 92 is an A-. Colleges usually recalculate your GPA using their own method when they receive your app. So a 3.4 at his school could very well be higher at other schools given the fact that he’s taken so many AP classes. So I’d say that if you have a dream of going to an Ivy, then to apply. However, if you do not want to go to an Ivy, then don’t simply apply just because it’s an Ivy.

For instance I know of a school in which getting an A in an AP class is a 5, honors is a 4, regular level is a 3. They do not look at minuses or pluses and they simply average it using this standard. This is much different than how my school calculates GPAs.

Thanks imsolidmatter, that was a very thoughtful post.

everything looks reasonable even with the low GPA. your SATs are top notch and you’ve obviously put a lot of work into community service, etc. william & mary might give you some trouble (i’ve heard they are unpredictable) but i think your stats look good.

chance me?

Your test scores are fantastic! Your gpa is a little bit low… (i like to give in %)

TCNJ-75% (great public school…)
Villanova-65%
Vanderbilt-55%
William and Mary-OOS, 50/50
UVA- OOS, 50/50
UMD-OOS, 65%
Emory- 40-45%
B.C.- 45%
Notre Dame-50/50
U.N.C.- OOS, 50/50
Lehigh- 55%-60% (higher end for non-engineering)

I was wondering if you had American U on your list, because it is the # 1 Politically Active School in America (Princeton Review). chances there probably are about 60-65%.

Note: My percentages are usually conservative.

Good luck to you.
