Chance me! - Ivies and Others for Econ/IR

Hi everyone!
So I'm a pretty good student, especially considering how much work I put off on a daily basis. However, my SAT score is considered by most to be "subpar," or on a good day, "low-average" for the Ivies. I understand that college admissions are more or less a lottery after a certain point, but if my SAT score is really going to get in the way, I don' t want to waste my time applying to more Ivies than necessary (I have four on my list right now). I will be retaking the SAT in June, and will probably take a shot at the ACT also.

Chance me please?

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2150 (first try - 680CR/760M/710W)
[] SAT II (to be taken): Math II, U.S. History, French
[] Weighted GPA: 4.347 at the end of sophomore year, upwards of 4.6/4.7 at the end of junior year.
[] Rank: 2 at the end of sophomore year
[] AP (junior year, to be taken): Calc AB, U.S. History, Micro, Macro
[] Senior Year Course Load (tentative): Gym, AP Calc BC, AP French, AP U.S. Gov, AP Lit, AP Euro, Marketing 2, Double Lunch (sinful, I know) -- alternatives: AP Stat, Yearbook

[/ul]Subjective - high school only, up to and including junior year:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Field hockey (3 years - x2 JV captain, x2 Coaches Award, Varsity member); Model UN (2 years - Co-VP, reformatted club, planned and hosted successful community-wide fundraiser in a month); International Club (2 years - Coordinate food for fundraiser); DECA (2 years - state finalist both years in three events, several awards at regional/state levels)
[] Job Experience: School Store (10th grade)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Peer Leaders (1 year - in school club, do community service related activities); Junior Achievement (10 hours); Field hockey clinic (2 hours)
[] Student of the Month for French (9th grade) and History (11th grade)
[] Teacher recs should be great, trying to avoid having to get a counselor one at all (we don't get along, he tried to make me take a lab science :p). I like to think my writing is intriguing, but who knows how the essays will turn out.
[] Additional Senior Year Clubs (potentially): NHS (accepted already), NBHS (app not out yet), SHF (french honor society, need to see if my school will offer membership)

[/ul]Other:[ul]
[] State: NJ
[] School Type: Public suburban, about 300 per grade
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income: Low, more than likely FA candidate
[] Hooks/Misc: "First gen" college in US (and first gen U.S. born), though my dad took some credit courses here to finish up his education from the motherland, so I'm not sure if that counts - though I wasn't really going to emphasize that at all. I'm proud of my ethnicity but frankly I've only seen it hurt candidates, not help. Bilingual, learning a third (but I can't read/write the second language, useless for anything other than conversations).

[/ul]Schools:[ul]
[] ED/RD - Huntsman (at UPenn), Columbia
[] RD - Princeton, Yale, UChicago, George Washington, Dickinson, Fairleigh Dickinson, TCNJ
[li]Are there any pertinent schools I'm a match for?[/ul]
[/li]

Intended Field of Study: Social Sciences (Economics/International Relations, possibly PoliSci/Gov)

Ask me anything you need, I will pretty much stalk this page
(sick + weekend + procrastination = all the time in the world).

Thank you!

Are you saying you are going to apply ED to two schools?

No, since I can’t… I’m trying to decide whether I want to decide ED to Penn or Columbia, but as I have yet to visit them, I’m stuck. If I were to apply right at this moment, it would probably be Huntsman ED, but that’s subject to change.

Anyone’s input would be appreciated.

You have the stats that may permit you to get into your ED ivy but your chances are dramatically reduced for those which you apply rd to. Especially if they’re Yale, Princeton, or even UChicago. Make sure that the one you apply ED to is the one the you sincerely hope to get into that you believe ED will make a difference for.

For example, Cornell’s RD acceptance rate is 14.5% while ED was about 33%. Even though that is the most blatant difference between ED and RD for an ivy, they generally follow the trend of having a significantly higher ED acceptance rate

Hope this helps

That’s pretty much my dilemma at the moment. Huntsman is super competitive, and if I have absolutely no shot, I don’t know if I want to “waste” my ED application on it.

Thank you for your input!

bump,
anyone else?

licensed to drive!
self-congratulatory bump

Retake SAT and aim for 1500+ in CR+M.

I think that you are a solid candidate!

You don’t have to take the sat again. You can if you feel it is necessary. However, you need to focus on aspects aside from numbers. You need essays that will show the schools who you are and what motivates you. Make yourself stand out through your essays. I say this because even a 2350 cannot guarantee an acceptance many people get rejected with those scores.

Ok, I’m tired to answer every “chance me”

  1. Nobody guarantee that you will be accepted to such universities… It’s bad for you, because one of these men will say “No, you have liitle chances” and it will reduce your self appraisal…
  2. There aren’t any formulas to get into Ivy
  3. There several things that will increase your chances:
  1. Good grads
  2. ECs
  3. volonteering
  4. Major Awards
  5. ESSAY( it’s very important part, because in this part you show admissions, who you are, why they should admit you)
Still, I think you have decent chances and I’m glad that you aren’t opponent of mine I’m XY, but you are Asian XX it will decrease your chances

Interested in IR, applies to GW and not Georgetown.

Thanks for the tips. I’m retaking the SAT because I didn’t hit my personal target score.
I’m confident in my essay-writing ability, so I wanted to see where just the numbers so far might take me.
There’s a reason these are called chance, not guarantee, boards. I wasn’t asking for someone to concretely determine whether or not I’ll be accepted to these schools. I’m not even applying to all these schools (and I have others which are not listed, like Georgetown fyi); it’s just a way for me to gauge where I stand given my numbers. My GC is not easy to talk to, so I asked on CC.
I don’t understand why being a female will hurt my chances, but okay.

Princeton, Yale, Upenn-Huntsman, and UChicago-High Reach
The Rest-in

For the high reaches, you need at least the mid-2200’s or even the 2300s on your SAT or 34+ ACT.

Not “in” at Columbia either, friedman, with its 6.7 2013 admit rate (lower than Pton or Chicago). OP, really weigh whether you want Hunstman or Columbia the most. Your ED application should be determined by desire, not mere opportunity. In other words, don’t pick your ED app. on assumption that one will be easier than the other. If you REALLY want Huntsman, I mean REALLY, go ED for that and make the strongest case to the Ad coms for yourself that you can. ED is for the school that is your absolute DREAM. The others can be RD. So…weigh which school is your dream and, be it Huntsman at Penn or Columbia, go for it. You have nothing to lose. I don’t believe you can “waste” an ED application on a school or program you truly truly love.

Might I also suggest looking at some good LACS, unless you are biased against liberal arts colleges? One or two LACS with strong programs in your areas of interest would perhaps make your list stronger. For example, Macalester College in Minnesota has excellent programs in your areas of interest.

Oh whoops, I forgot to include Columbia with the other reaches. my bad

My ED will definitely be the school of my dreams. On paper, they both have their pros, but I won’t be able to decide until I visit. You’re right about the whole “wasting” thing - it’s always worth a shot.

I’m looking into LACs right now, but there are quite a few of them hahah, which isn’t making it easy. I’d probably stick to New England/Mid-Atlantic though. Funny story about Mac actually. They sent me some mail and didn’t change the name on the letter, so I wrote back and asked them not to send me anything else. First impression wasn’t a good one.

I agree, Mac did not make a good first impression. And you do have to take that into account when making decisions amongst so many schools. Eeeck! Before you completely reject the midwest or west coast, however, give some thought to superior LACs like Carleton in Minnesota and Pomona in California. Both may be worth a look.

ED Huntsman (at UPenn) - Low Reach
Columbia - High Reach
Princeton - High Reach
Yale - High Reach
UChicago - Reach
George Washington - Low Match
Dickinson - Safety
Fairleigh Dickinson - Safety
TCNJ - Safety

If your SAT score improves to 1500/2250, the High Reaches become reachable.
