**Chance me: JHU, Yale, Harvard, Brown, Case Western, OSU, WashU, UChicago**

Hello fellow CC Comrades!
I'm happy to chance back when asked!

I am looking for chances but MORE IMPORTANTLY important feedback on what to add/change. I am a rising junior so I will be able to improve based on suggestions!

Here are my stats:
•Rising junior
•Asian-American - First Gen- Fluent in Hindi and English (if that helps :p)
•Planned major: Biology w/ a pre-med route
JHU is my top choice, will probably apply binding ED (30% acceptance rate with ED)!

Academics:
•35 ACT w/ 10 Essay
•SAT IIs - planning to take 2-3 (700 on BIO- Is that too low to report? Retake?)
•GPA: 4.42 W/4.00 UW (Ranked 1st in a class of 362)
Should I take SAT 1 as well or is that not required?

Classes: (most rigorous at school with a science focus)
Freshman:
•Hon. English 9, Spanish II, Hon. Alg II, Hon. Biology, World Studies, Orchestra, Public Speaking, Sports Medicine (Alg I and Hon.Geo 7th/8th grade)
Sophomore:
•Hon. English 10, Hon. Chemistry, AP Biology (4), APUSH (4), Hon. Pre Calc, Human Anatomy, Spanish III

-Raised a couple thousand dollars to help build a school in an Indian village- will visit in around December
-Teach Sunday school classes at local temple relating to a foreign language and religion
-Hopefully National Honor Society and also Diversity club next year
-Tutor a lot of friends (ACT and classes) but I don't have an official record... Can I still report it?

Awards:
A few minor writing and public speaking awards (worth reporting?)
Hopefully AP Scholar of some sort and National Merit

Other notes:
-The Dr I do my internship likes me a lot and I can probably get a good recommendation

Let me know what to improve, what looks good, anything! Please be honest!

IMO you should try to focus your ECs in the area of your intended major, kids accepted to Yale and JHU and such schools are very active in their fields, u getting published would help, along with a more focused approach to volunteering at the hospital. Otherwise everything seems fine, assuming you have an interesting essay topic.

@manas1997 Thank you! I will try my best to get published during the end of this year or next year! As for being more active in my field, I will look more into a shadowing opportunity I got a while back! That should help quite a bit!

Bear in mind that all of those schools, except for OSU and Case, are going to be at least low reaches for nearly everyone.

OSU can be considered a safety, and Case is probably a match.

If I were you, I’d add a few more matches or low reaches. For example:
Notre Dame
Emory
Cal
Michigan
Georgetown

@prezbucky ok thank you for the suggestions, I will surely look into those schools and other ones!

And you’re also going to be a competitive applicant at top-notch LACs, in case you might be interested in traveling that path.

@prezbucky‌ Sorry I am not familiar with the term “LACs” could you explain that?

Sure thing:

Liberal arts college

They typically feature small class sizes, strong interaction with professors, and somewhat limited class and major offerings when compared to national universities.

Some of the top LACs are:
Williams
Amherst
Swarthmore
Pomona
Middlebury
Wellesley
Bowdoin
Carleton
Haverford
Claremont McKenna
Reed
Grinnell
Vassar
Wesleyan
Harvey Mudd
Hamilton
Bates
Davidson

@prezbucky‌ Ok thank you! I have not looked into any of those schools previously and will be sure to do some more research into LACs!

I think all of those schools have their own topics under Top Liberal Arts Colleges…

every school has its own major that’s hard to get in…
CHANCE ME! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1666557-chance-me-for-my-college-list.html#latest

don’t take the SAT I. You don’t need to. I think you plan to major in Bio, for Yale, Harvard, etc then yes a 700 is too low. especially since you’re only gonna be a junior. you have so much time. retake it. I’d retake bio and take chem and maybe math II if you’re good at math.

Safety: OSU, obviously.
Match: Case Western, JHU

I might put Brown is a high match (high because of the low acceptance rate. anything could happen) if your essays are good enough. Brown wants personality. The middle 50 ACT is 29 to 34 for a reason. Stats aren’t enough honestly. You have to be unique and show that in your writing.

You have a good chance of getting into Yale, Harvard, WashU and Chicago but I can’t really say with certainty. I wouldn’t necessarily call them reaches because your stats are good enough but sometimes, IMO, it just depends. When everyone has high test scores and a 4.0 GPA and amazing ECs, i honestly think it depends on the admissions officer. Sometimes they like you, sometimes they don’t. It’s not as objective as they make it seem sometimes. I’d apply to all of them. If I had to guess, i’d say you’ll get into WashU and UChicago but Harvard and Yale are unpredictable

seeing as you’re applying to JHU ED i’d also like to add that you have a VERY strong chance of admission
one of my best friends got in and is going in the fall
she’s asian, 2390 on her ACT, 4.0 UW, took the most advanced courses our school offers
only had four ECs: JSA, Tennis Captain, Volunteered at a hospital, Founder and president of club to help kids with special needs
she did not apply ED
so that should reassure you

@marilo12 THANK YOU very much! I was a little worried about JHU cuz its my top choice! I will retake/take SAT 2s this year.

Props to you for being a rising JUNIOR and already having awesome stats! I can’t think of much else you can do except to continue what you’re doing.

Although you might want to consider getting a paid internship/paid job. Your ECs are great, especially the raising money and building a school part. Lots of people create their own organization or found a club but its hard to really change a community like that. :)

I agree with above posters: don’t take the SAT I, both tests are held in the same regard and a 35 is DEFINITELY good enough for all the top colleges.

You should also consider entering science fairs (and making your way up to Siemens, Intel, etc). With your research internship that shouldn’t be too much of a hassle! Winning big awards are always a plus.

I admire your preparedness! Good luck in all your endeavors

I’d avoid thinking of the elite schools as matches because despite the fact that your stats might match the stats of admits, you must realize that the vast majority of applicants, many of whom also have great stats, are rejected. The elite schools really are not matches for anyone.

That is why I recommended more true (in terms of your chances of being admitted, 40-60%) matches for you to consider.

@the27thletter‌ Thank you, and the science fairs are a good idea, i will see what i can do!

@prezbucky‌ I agree, Ivy league is always a reach! I also agree I need to do some more research on the schools you mentioned and other safety/match schools!

You probably want your bio score up a little, but other than that solid application. No need to take SAT since your act is high enough. I can only see OSU and case western as lowest reaches in the list so get some safeties in there

@RacquetSmasher76‌ Thank you! I will work on SATIIs and doing more research on match/safety colleges!
