  5. University of Illinois Chicago
  6. Michigan
  7. Emory
  8. Purdue
  9. Hunter
  10. Universities that you can think of that would be a good match for me

Firstly, find out what your father can afford.
Then, check the NPC’s (net price calculators) on each school’s website to find out your costs.
Out of state schools will be expensive.
The public state universities like the UC’s do not provide ANY financial aid/scholarships/grants to out of state residents, so your costs for a UC run ~$60K per year or $240,000 for 4 years. NYU is even more expensive and has lousy financial aid. Expect to pay $72K per year. These costs are NOT cheap.

Your instate publics should be safe options.

Yeah I have already done that. On nyu it says I would get 45k. Also, I’m pretty sure I will get the max amount on the fasfa because I’ve done those calculators before too and the efc is 0. And ky has a scholarship for your grades that you can use in select states I will have like 2000 something in that. Also I’m not trying to ruin my life for a piece of paper lol but I wouldn’t mind getting out some loans as long as it would not take me 5 years to pay back. Didn’t know that about the UC schools lol forget them then. Do you think I could get into the other schools? I will probs worry about financial aid after I get into the school and know how much money they give me and how many scholarships I get

Your first priority should be to bring up that ACT score or try the SAT instead. You’re an interesting and well-balanced applicant aside from those low scores!

Another thing worth looking into that I think would serve you extremely well:
Apply to colleges that don’t require standardized testing. There’s a lot of great ones in there!

Good luck!

I think I could get my act up to at least a 27. I was shocked when I got a 25 in march because I didn’t finish any of the tests and I stopped reading the reading passages and started using logic to guess on the questions. Also I spent like 10 minutes on this one math problem that i was determined to do which caused me to only get to like question 45ish. I’m also pretty bad at the science problems about physics, so on the physics question, I just guessed on all that. On that act, I thought I got a 26 english 26 math 25 science and a 27 reading. I was pretty proud of the random guessing on the reading I guess lol. English I didn’t try at all really and didn’t know some of them and also didn’t finish lol. I took a practice test a couple weeks ago and got a 31 english 29 reading and 26 science, so I think I can definitely get my score up if I tried.

@CGrammar Your post just now makes it sound like you need ACT preparation (or SAT preparation and take the SAT test instead). Random guessing and taking 10 minutes on one problem make it look like you haven’t been trained on how to take the test.

The 10 minute problem was one I knew I wasted a lot of time on but I just really wanted to figure it out. On the reading I just started random guessing because I got lazy and didnt want to read the passage. Also this test was a state test so i didnt pay for it. I have read some articles and watched videos about the act and tricks. We did some prep at school but the test wasn’t like the act at all.

Discipline, man! Only take 10 minutes on a problem if you have 10 minutes left over after all the questions on the section are answered. It sounds like you’re having trouble getting into the “zone” while testing. Try taking more practice tests to get used to the format and focus required.

Good luck!

You do need a much higher score at least for half of the schools on your list.

Yesss! The problem was getting in the zone lol. I know that I only got to around 40-45 on the math part and if I did better at spacing out my time and not being lazy I could easily get a 28-30 on the math depends on how much I know in the test. I saw one of the later problems and it was system of equations and I was like dang I know how to do that. But Ive just been slacking on the focus during tests and stuff and I wasn’t in the mood for the ACT that day.

The thing is though man that a place like NYU is pretty must out of reach unless you have like at least a 31. You gotta shoot for higher than a 27 or else a place like NYU isn’t gonna happen

@oakland818 yeah you’re right. I am definitely going to work on improving my ACT this summer then take it in September and October. If I improved my ACT to a 28-29 do you think I would have a chance at NYU

@CGrammar with some strong hooks, a boatload of EC commitment, and some terrific essays, the chance is always there. But be warned, NYU is essentially like a mini-ivy league in a way, so they are fairly discerning in their selections. Someone with a 36 might get rejected. You never know.

@CGrammar When you’re in that test room, don’t even let the thought of not being in the mood cross your mind and crush that test. All of the answers are literally right in front of your nose! Your job on each problem is just to figure out which one of the four listed answers is right.

I wish you luck, but remember- you can’t expect your score to reflect 100% if you don’t give 100%.

@newkidnewtrix Ive had this problem the whole year basically and it carried on in the ACT, but it is that I couldnt focus bc I just didnt care or didnt see the point or was considered with other things. Although my grades were the best theyve ever been, I didnt really try hard to improve my act or work on other things, just did enough to get by. Yes I feel like the reading test is my weakness because I always think it seems like there are two answers but theres not. Also the time is a big problem for me but I think if i just focus in and not waste time and time manage myself, it’ll be better.

@oakland818 what would be a good hook?
