Applying ED1, Engineering School.
Other considerations:
-3 AP courses to date with scores of 4, 3 & 3
-2 AP courses senior year
-work during school year and summers
-Multiple volunteer and leadership roles through our church
-National Honor Society
-School’s Distinguished honor roll every quarter through out high school
-JV & Varsity Basketball team manager

-Volunteer head coach for recreational basketball team of 10-12 yr olds
-strong text
Maybe if you apply ED. but honestly very little chance. Kids get into Ivy and turned down at NEU. In engineering, even tougher. You’re likely not in line for any top school - it’s just very competitive.
Your rigor seems low - but often times that’s because a school does not offer all the APs, etc. Does your school have a limited amount or you just took less? btw - you should never over extend - so even if they offer more, but they are not ‘right’ for you, does not mean you should take them if they will overwhelm you.
Lots of great options out there for you though. If you are interested, just ask - but let us know where you are from (state wise), type of environment (I assume urban), size, etc.
Pitt may be a good sub…or Drexel in regards to similar environments.
Good luck.
I agree with @tsbna44 that northeastern would be a reach or a high reach for you. I am not sure whether it is worth an application, but I would definitely focus more effort on schools where admissions is more likely. I also agree with @tsbna44 that there are a lot of very good universities to choose from.
That is not necessarily true. I doubt many kids getting into IVY are turned down at NEU. OFC there are always some schools that happens with - but not that common.
NEU may be a reach but ED and SAT score will definitely help.
I didn’t say the majority. But it hapoens. I know one and others have posted on the CC. My point is. NEU is a very difficult admit. Every school within a school and decision type are different so you have to take with a grain of salt but per niche NEU is the 49th hardest college to get into of thousands in America. Engineering obviously waits on the harder side.
Good luck to the OP.
Taking it from your posting history that you’re the parent, yes?
Northeastern is probably out of range for your child’s stats, especially for engineering. Even for the university overall, the 33 ACT - which is their greatest strength stats-wise, is still below median. The median weighted GPA, university-wide, is over 4.0. Their course rigor and AP scores are decent but don’t stand out. Overall, this record might be good enough for a recruited athlete to squeak in, but getting into engineering without a “hook” is an extreme long shot - it’s a very stats-focused school.
If they particularly want to be in that neighborhood and study engineering, Wentworth would welcome them with open arms. But there are plenty of options in between NEU and WIT in terms of competitiveness, where they could find a good fit. If a school that specializes in co-op education is the goal, Drexel and Cincinnati deserve a look. Many other schools offer co-op as an option - RIT and Pitt are two good examples. Smaller schools like Clarkson or Rose-Hulman could make excellent choices. For an NEU-sized university with serious basketball fandom, Syracuse could be a great target. And there are plenty of excellent programs at public universities beyond the couple that I’ve already suggested. (What’s your home state?)
What are your child’s interests within engineering? What about NEU is appealing?
true about engineering…there are also “shockers” that come out of the ED round. So if you really love it, knowing it’s a reach and you can afford it - why not try.
I agree. You have 20 Common App spots. I’d use them all. My daughter did - and a couple simple, non common app. Especially in this day and age of schools needing to fill seats - you might get into Northeastern at $80K but U of wherever at $35K. You may not love U of whatever - but if it’s $45K less a year - that’s real money - your parents might get you to love it.
So if a school has no extra essay and a free app, why not apply?
And yes the OP should absolutely apply - because we are all amateurs and the only pros are at the school itself.
But if they ask for a read it’s a no - and to ensure they have ample safety and reaches
The great thing about engineering is you can do a co op at so many schools - so it’s not limited to Northeastern. My son goes to Bama…they have them. One of his intern friends from the summer was a co-op. Ole Miss.
The OP will be fine.
Yes, I agree about applying to as many as possible. When I applied my parent’s mantra was go to the “best” school for what they are offering $$$. We couldn’t do full pay.
Now my brother is applying and he is more in range of OP stats. He has interest in NEU but knows it’s a reach and would only get in ED. BUT when I got accepted to NEU - they gave no $$ at all.
No matter anyone’s stats - you need targets and safety that you will be happy at …especially now.
Absolutely, there’s no harm in applying. The only question is whether the the “ED card” might be better played at a more realistic reach school. But if there’s no other school where OP would want to submit a binding app, then go for it. (An “N.U.in” acceptance with the first semester abroad is more likely than a regular fall acceptance, so definitely think through whether to opt in for that possibility.)
The good thing is they offer NU in - in Boston now. Not a bad idea for someone who doesn’t want to start out abroad.
That was a COVID initiated program. No guarantee that NU In Boston will be offered for Fall 2022 applicants.
yes. its been offered for two years and the way things look with covid Im guessing it will be offered in 2022. Just a guess
My credentials are very similar, dance teacher, 3.6 gpa, 33 act, 2ap classes with a 4 and a 5. I recieved my acceptance yesterday. Keep in mind I applied Ed and as a criminal justice and psychology major. My essays were very strong and so was my rec letter. These little tweaks will make your application much stronger, remember that you can always switch majors once you’re in college. I stood out because I started a foundation to help disabled children pay for dance classes. This, coupled with my community service, really gave me a leg up.
Congratulations!!!
I don’t think that’s true with certain majors like engineering. Congratulations!
My son was accepted yesterday for NUin
Congratulations!!! Glad to hear that applying ED and saying yes to the NUin option put his app over the top - that’s great news! Have they told you what’s being offered in terms of NUin locations?
Did Tufts University give you money?
yes - they were my most generous school
