Chance Me NYU

Hi everyone!
I’m freaking out about my ED applicataion to NYU and I just really want to know- do I have a chance of going to my dream school? Please let me know, and be honest! Honesty is key. Thank you all, you’re wonderful!

Here are my stats:

GPA unweighted: 3.0

SAT: 1210

AP classes: I just found out my school offers AP’s last year, but I quickly got involved in honors english and honors french, so I have 1 year of both of those. I plan to take AP english next semester.

AP test scores:

Science- 3
English-5
Microeconomics-2
Psychology-3

ECs:

-250 hours of community service- 3 mission trips
-speech and debate team captain (junior and senior year)
-co-head of linguistics club all 4 years
-ceramics classes in and outside of school all 4 years
-Silver key for ceramic piece in scholastic art awards
-tap dance, 8 years

Hooks:

-minority (dad is white, mom is half white half asian)
-legacy (sister goes there)
-money wouldn’t be a problem
-I love ceramics and my portfolio has a lot of strong pieces!

I know NYU is the college for me, but I’m torn between Gallatin, where I’d focus on enhancing my ceramics abilities combined with marketing so that I could start my own business after school and sell my work! Or, I could go to CAS and focus on the economics while pursuing art on the side outside of school- I considered applying to Stern, but my SAT score might be too low for me to have much of a chance there. That’s okay though, because I really think I belong at NYU at either CAS or Gallatin- which should I apply to/which would I have a better chance of getting onto?

Your low numbers (SAT score & GPA) are a concern.

And AP.

From NYU’s latest Common Data Set:
https://www.nyu.edu/content/dam/nyu/institutionalResearch/documents/CDS_2018-2019.pdf

Percent who had GPA of 3.75 and higher
Percent who had GPA between 3.50 and 3.74 40%
Percent who had GPA between 3.25 and 3.49 29%
Percent who had GPA between 3.00 and 3.24 20%
Percent who had GPA between 2.50 and 2.99 2%

SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 650 25th % 720 75th %
SAT Math 660 25th % 790 75th %

Stats that put you below the 25th percentile on standardized test scores, and probably well below the 10th percentile on GPA put you at an extreme disadvantage.

If you are interested in pursuing ceramics, there are plenty of arts schools where your stats are just fine.

Why is it “the school for you?” Your stars say otherwise, unfortunately. And unless your school does block scheduling, isn’t AP English (Lang or lit?) a year long course?

Hmm… have to agree with the pessimism from the above. From NYU’s website: Class of 2022 enrolled stats: typical GPA 3.7 (unweighted), SAT middle 50 1350-1530. Class of 2023 median admitted SAT: 1480.

Also: Legacy is not a hook at NYU, I don’t really feel you are URM, and money isn’t a consideration (admission is need blind for domestic applicants).

What match and safety schools are you looking at? I agree with another poster above, that perhaps an art focused school might be more appropriate.

(Also, what is AP Science?)

You are 3/4 white and 1/4 Asian. You are not a URM so no hook.

For most majors I would say that NYU is out of reach but your portfolio, if exceptional, may get you in.

With that GPA and those SATs, there is almost no chance that you will be accepted into their College of Arts and Sciences or Stern.

Moreover, that GPA seems to be for a curriculum which does not seem to be a very challenging, compared to the curricula of the other students who are applying to NYU’s CAS.

I’m not sure about the process for being accepted to Gallatin, but, aside from the issue of GPA and SAT, the fact that you did not know about your high school’s AP offering until your Junior year does not bode well for your abilities to set up your own curriculum.

The point of college is not to be accepted. The point is to succeed and thrive. Check the stats on the NYU class of 2023, and see how similar yo are to them, academically.

Overall, your talents seem to lie in studio art and in performing arts, and these seem to be pretty strong, especially in studio arts. On the other hand, I do not see anything that indicates that you will succeed in the economics part of your planned curriculum at NYU.

Find a college which plays to your strengths, of which you have many. NYU CAs and Gallatin are not really among those colleges.

BTW, if you’re looking at NYU, why not Steinhardt? I’m not sure about their GPAs, but it is very possible that you could be accepted with that GPA if your portfolio is strong enough.

PS. You may be considered a minority, however, no college in the USA would consider you an underrepresented minority.

Autocorrect above. Stats, not stars.

For ceramics, consider Alfred University in New York state. Although a very different environment than NYU & NYC, it has either the best or one of the best ceramics fine arts programs in the country.

Alfred is a rolling admissions school with about 1,600 students.

“The point is to succeed and thrive.” They need to feel you can manage, once there, considering how peers are prepared. And you have a variety of classes to get through, besiides art.

You can try, you know the odds. But find other choices where you can get excited and “thrive,” in all ways. If you want to be near your sister, what about other NYC colleges?

If you’re willing to look further, SUNY Potsdam has strong art. I haven’t looked at it in a long while, but used to be strong in ceramics.

I agree with other comments. There is a great match school for you. I seriously doubt that NYU is it.

Personally, I would be very reluctant to attend any university where my stats put me well below the 25th percentile for both GPA and SAT scores. University is tough enough for students who come in above the 50th percentile for both.

Keep looking, you will find a school that is a good fit for you.

Also, find out what your budget is, and pay attention to what each school is likely to cost. You do not want to take on debt in order to get a degree in any field that does not immediately lead to a high paying job.

Another point…being 25% Asian isn’t going to make you “diverse” at NYU. NYU is over 15% Asian, so your ethnicity isn’t going to boost the odds you’ll be admitted at all.

I agree with the above advice. NYU isn’t going to happen.

Are you a NYS resident? We have a lot of great schools. Where else are you applying?

Op… where’d you go?

I’d say still give it a shot. There have been plenty of accepts far below the averages that got in on their essays and portfolios. Additionally, if it comes across that NYU really is the school for you, they’ll value that.

@rtkpdx , note that NYU specifically says it only considers portfolios where they are part of the requirement for application to a particular school/program (Tisch, Steinhardt). For those, yes I agree that a portfolio can offset below-par stats. The other well-below-average stats main segment in my understanding comes from the HEOP type programs.

For any other major I’d say your chances are slim, but if you’re going into the arts I’d say still go for it. At the end of the day your portfolio is the most important thing so if it’s really good they may accept you even if your stats are below average for the school
