Chance Me!!! - Out of State UC Psychology Junior Transfer (2016-2017 School Year)

Hey everyone! So I was wondering if any of you who may come across this thread could potentially chance me. I am an out of state CC student from Oregon who REALLY wants to transfer to a UC school. I have recently sent in my app for next admission next fall, and want to know what others out there think my chances are. I am a Psychology major who is also taking pre-med coursework. I was not a good student at all in high school, but when I started college, I made the necessary changes within myself and my habits, to be in a situation where I can succeed. I am really proud of myself for my academic turnaround since high school, and I really hope these schools see that.

UCs I applied to: UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine.

Prerequisite Completion: I will have every pre-req completed by the end of Spring term before transfer. The only exception to this is that for some of the UC’s, you need to take a Psychology Research Methods Course as a pre-req for that major, but A LOT of CCs do not offer that course, which is why I could not do it at my community college. Other than that, I will be all good to go.

I have completed 66 quarter credits so far, and plan to have 104 completed by the time of transfer.

Completed Coursework:

Fall Quarter 2014

Biology 101: B
Introduction to Psychology - Part 1: A
Introduction to Literature (Poetry): B

GPA: 3.73

EC’s: I am heavily involved in community service activities. I am apart of the Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program. What we essentially do is start junior youth groups in many communities around the Portland metro area, and we go out and serve our communities in numerous ways by doing service projects. Our goal is to get young students between the ages of 11-14 to develop a sense of self-purpose by understanding that they are not too young to make a change in the world. That is my primary involvement in regards to ECs.

Out of all the UC’s I am applying to, my DREAM is to go to UC Berkeley. I completely understand though that admission is VERY competitive even in state, let alone out of state. Regardless, I believe that the only way to go about life is to dream big, and to control the things that you can control. The rest will come.

Thank you so much for reading this! I look forward to seeing your guys’ opinions on my chances!

Being an OOS will def make ucb a reach. Your gpa is alright, I got waitlisted as an OOS with a 3.71, But I also didn’t have a lot of recent volunteer experience. If you wrote about your Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program and how you’ve changed then perhaps you have a chance! Admissions can be kinda crazy sometime… I’m just wondering if you completed all your pre reqs?

Thanks for the reply! What schools did you get waitlisted for? I will also have all the pre-reqs complete by the end of Spring term before transfer. The only one that I will not have completed is one for my major called Psychology Research Methods. The reason I won’t be able to do it is because it is not offered by many CCs, including mine. I know UC Davis says that whoever hasn’t done that course can take it at Davis, but I don’t know about UCB. Other than that one course, I am all good with both UCB and UCD. As for UCI, the only thing I would be missing is a Computer Science class (which I can easily take there). For UCLA, you have to be admitted as a “Pre-Psychology” major regardless. Then once in the school, when all pre-reqs are competed, you can be admitted to the major itself.

I got into UCLA, UCI, UCSD, UCD and waitlisted at UCB, but I got off the waitlist. I took this year off for school for personal reasons… Hmm… you’re prereqs should be good then- if its not offered at your CC UCB won’t penalize you for that.

Will they penalize it if I didn’t mention on my app that it wasn’t offered? I would assume that it is something that they would probably know. The reason why I didn’t mention it was because that specific course wasn’t a required pre-req for the Psych major of all of the UCs that I applied to.

If you get in, can you afford the fees? $55K per year?

^ What’s it to you?

Funding a college education is important, don’t you think? Why apply to schools that may be unaffordable? A number of students don’t even look at the college websites for costs.

So many people apply and come Spring admissions notices, students are stunned to find that they can’t pay.

Be nice!

I doubt that is a widespread problem. If the OP does not mention finances, it is rude to raise the subject.

To both of you, yes I will be able to afford it, so that is not the problem! Thanks for the response!

Good to know
