Sigh... recently got rejected at my dream school (Columbia, although knew it was a big reach...) and now am scrambling to get other apps out. Please take a look?

I asked my guidance counselor to explain the situation in her letter.

My chances at:

Amherst
Cornell
University of Chicago
Northwestern
Colgate
University of Rochester
George Washington University
Rutgers

focus on my adaptation to new languages/settings throughout my life and the way I came to appreciate how words from different languages bring new perspective to a single meaning
How Iris Chang’s “Rape of Nanking” novel effected me and how I’m now doing legacy in order to tell others’ stories that would otherwise be left untold.

SAT score is important but GPA would really help in me telling you what your chances are…I am going to assume a decent GPA say 3.85

Amherst- in
Cornell- high match
University of Chicago- low reach
Northwestern- high match
Colgate- in
University of Rochester- in
George Washington University- match
Rutgers- match

According to my transcript I have a “5.400 on a 5 pt scale” which doesn’t make any sense. It’s obviously weighted, but not sure how to convert… XD

From what I understand, you want to major in social sciences, right? If yes, then you have a perfect resume. You’ve done a lot of volunteering, which is a great advantage over the other applicants.
Amherst-> In
Colgate-> In
George Washington University-> High match

@Visvires: actually, I’m looking to be an English major XD. my school doesn’t offer a lot of creative writing ECs, so I mostly write on my own time.

Bumpity bump~ will chance back if you leave a link. Thanks to bestdecision and visvires for your opinions, they are very encouraging. I’m not sure I’m as qualified as you seem to think I am, but it certainly is a confidence booster! Any other biters?

Cornell - Reach
University of Chicago - Low Reach
Northwestern - Reach
Colgate - I don’t know this well enough

Colgate - low reach
University of Rochester - in
George Washington University - in
Rutgers - in

hmm alot of people seem to saying that Amherst is a “in” for me. But isn’t it a top LAC (with like, 15% admit rate? XD) I’m sorry to be sounding doubtful here, but can anyone enlighten me on why my app might be so appealing to Amherst? It’s one of my top choices.

thanks for chancing me.
First can I say, are you really gonna put "Walk for a cure 10 11 " on there?
Charity walks are great and all, but they do not really count as committed community service. They are something you should do because you support it. If you had a part in organizing your chapters walk then by all means put it on there. Like I was co-coordinator of the childrens area for the PKD walk in my state for two years running, so i put that on there. but if you do it because you support it and its not a longterm committment, then you should think about leaving it off.

Just a piece of advice, that being said.
Amherst - match/low reach
Cornell - high reach
University of Chicago - high reach
Northwestern - reach
Colgate - match/low reach
University of Rochester - match
George Washington University - in, match
Rutgers - in

Amherst good chance

University of Chicago good chance
Northwestern decent chance
Colgate good chance
University of Rochester in
George Washington University in

thats unique, asian fluent in spanish!!! good luck:)

Thank you Funnypunjabi~ lol actually it’s French. Although not really sure how I can incorporate that in my app well oh, well I’ll figure something out.

thanks shortnsweet
XDDD yeah, I realized “walk for the cure” isn’t that persuasive of an activity. I copied + pasted this resume from my NHS app, so it does have some silly things on it. I was going to take it off, but couldn’t edit the original post after the time limit, so didn’t do anything. Thanks for the advice though, you have a very good point.

I still have a hard time believing Amherst is a “match/low reach/good chance”??? lol I’ve always pictured it in my mind as like “HUGE reach” but really wanted to go there XD.

Thanks for chancing me. With regards to your ECs, you’ve been fairly consistent, with the exception of Chorus and Key Club, but that shouldn’t hurt too much as you later branched out and entered other volunteering organizations. You seem to have a great chance at all the school’s you’re applying to, and all that heavy community involvement will definitely move things in your favor. Your essay topic is creative and sounds like an interesting read already. Here’s what I think (on a 1-10 scale):

Amherst: 6/7
Cornell: 5/6
University of Chicago: 5/6 (if your essays are great, though, you have a pretty good shot)
Northwestern: 7/8
Colgate: 7/8
University of Rochester: 7/8
George Washington University: 8/9
Rutgers: 9/10

I’m sure you’ll do brilliantly. Best of luck!!
