So for some reason I thought getting into College Park wouldn't be a problem, but yesterday I was deferred from University of Michigan, so I've lost any kind of confidence. I haven't even told my parents yet. Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.5 unweighted 4.1 weighted
SAT: 2340 (800 Reading 780 Math 760 Writing) one try

Other/Extracurriculars:
-Took 4 AP classes and all honors classes except for 1 year of Spanish (AP World 5, AP National/State Legislature 5, AP Lang 4, AP Calculus 3) -Taking 3 this year (AP Bio, AP Comparative Government, AP Lit)
-Work as a teacher aide for an SAT tutoring program
-Worked over the the summer as a page in the US Senate
-Established and now teach at an after school geography program at a Title II Elementary School. (Won the county award for leadership in education)
-Hispanic Merit Scholar for PSAT scores
-2 Year Member of Debate Team (Lincoln Douglas and Public Policy Styles)
-Staff Resources Manager and Circulation Manager for school newspaper. (Won 1st place in Maryland High School Journalism Awards for a News story I wrote)
-Play 1st violin in School Orchestra/Participated for three years in the highly competitive county orchestra

I know my GPA doesn't make sense with my SAT score and it's probably because I was extremely lazy during my first two years of high school. I wasn't aware that college was something I ever had to apply to and coasted on B's instead. I was hoping colleges could overlook this considering how my grades have gradually improved throughout high school, but since I was deferred from Michigan, I'm afraid that it's very important and I'll never get into College Park, whose average GPA is above mine.

I was rather counting on college park, and now I'm not sure if all my friends will easily get in while I'm left behind, forcing my parents to pay out of state tuition. Thank you for your advice!

Thanks so much, and yes Michigan is so much more competitive than I thought! They probably have a pretty solid GPA cutoff in order to make admissions decisions easier on the department.

I really can’t believe you didnt get into mich, im so sorry. It doesnt make sense your sat is way above there avg and a 4.1 is fine. I know plenty of people there with far worse stats. it must be a really competitive group. What was your class rank?

My class doesn’t have rankings but thank you. I didn’t think my essay was so terrible either, but theoretically it’s another thing that could have brought me down.

Roumfort…Do not be so down on yourself…you have an excellent HS resume, and will probably get into UMD. Many deserving applicants are deferred, declined, or whatever due to the amount of applicants, and other reasons. With your resume, you will surely get into a good school. Maybe not your first choice, but wait and see. Good Luck!

R U OOS for Michigan? If so, have you looked at the cost of attending? It is very expensive OOS.

I was applying OOS to Michigan and yes the cost is pretty high. I applied because my parents encouraged me to and I did hope to at least get accepted. UMD would be my top choice because I’m in state so the tuition would hopefully be less. I’m nervous now though, my sister got a full scholarship to UMD and I hoped I could at least count on getting in. Thanks for the advice, I wish we would talk to the admissions people who deferred us ahah because I just want to know what it was.

I’m sure it was your GPA that didn’t get you into Michigan. You will be in at UMD. (My son was also deferred from Michigan and eventually rejected, but accepted into Smith at UMD. His scores were similar but his GPA was lower.)

wow if you didn’t get into UMichigan then I have no hope lol. But seeing the stats of kids from my school who got into UMD, I would say you’re in. Plus you are Hispanic! (Not trying to bring a racial discussion into this or even be slightly insulting, but realistically, we all know most colleges nowadays take URM into account). Also, your volunteer experience is strong. Good luck!
